Hello, I have lived out here for over 20 yrs and know of the multiple drowning ect on this lake but......... Last summer after the two guy "drowned " I went down to the old resort and just sat there. I was there for about 2 hours when I noticed ... well not to sound crazy or anything but what's the BLEEP is in that Lake?! Anyone know what I am talking about? Has anyone heard strange sounds down there ? The sounds are usually around dusk or at night. Oh yea and last year about a month before the drowning, dose anyone remember hearing about something in Tanawax ? Something that was coming up to 6 foot out of the water to take ducks? Kid you not ask at Kapowsin store, someone there will know. |

I would sure like to know more. If the animal is coming out of the water and six feet into the air, someone must be seeing its body shape, color, other details.
River otters will take ducks. |

Am sorry to hear it was your brother. I do not mean any disrespect.
The thing coming up out of the lake was Tanawax not Kapowsin. Have you checked into the history of that lake? I live here. Been down there since the new boat launch? Come spring if you go there look for a duck. |

Wow I never have noticed any ducks. I spend most of my summer on that lake with my 6 and 8 year old. We were even trying to buy property on it.

You won't find many ducks on any lake in summer... except for local ducks that people will feed. Ducks migrate north in summer remember?
There are huge fish in Kapowsin. Plus beavers that will slap their tails when they sense danger. Not masny river ottetrs in that lake that I know of. Grew up in Electron... so I have many days spent on that lake. There are a lot of logs that float just under the surface of kapowsin too. Big logs from when the lake was used as a holding area for the mills. There ain't no Kapowsin Lake Monster or anything. |

Oh yeah... if you are referring to the deep graoning sounds at dusk and daybreak... they are huge bullfrogs. They make a decent siz3ed splash too when the jump into the water.

Hello,

JoJo, where is the old resort, the only way I know of getting to the lake is by the new dock, they gated off the old fishing store and boat rentals place. The old resort sounds interesting. |

The sounds are usually around dusk or at night. Oh yea and last year about a month before the drowning, dose anyone remember hearing about something in Tanawax ?" In Reply... Well all, I have been on the waters around Kapowsin for over 25 years...Kapowsin, Whitman, Byron, Tanwax and upper and lower Twin lakes. I've spent a little time on Ohop as well, and have hunted much of this area, from Clay City to the river valley on the North end of Kapowsin, and the hills and valleys in between. While my hunting days have been over for more than 10 years now, I still make regular trips to the local waters, and have been living on one of them for more than ten years now. As far as strange sounds...well I've catfished on Kapowsin from sunset to nearly sunrise a few times, and often been on any one of these lakes or another for a few hours after sunset. There's no doubt in my mind that the strangest noises of all the local lakes exist on Kapowsin. It doesn't surprise me though, look at the structure of that lake, the debris in the lake, and the surrounding lands. All of these add up to the perfect home for a variety of wildlife, doing what they do best, and making noises while doing it. The debris in the water along with the old structures (pilings, duck blinds, and home made rafts left to rot) is going to lead some odd "crashes" in the water, and slightly below the water as well, eminating odd noises. The rotting debris in the lake will produce methane gases, occasionally creating bouyancy in the rotting materials until it "belches" out that gas, once again creating odd sets of sounds from the squirting ofthe gas, bubbling methane, splashing of objects, and fading squeals from the sinking or rising objects. All of the sounds I have caught on the lake (which far out numbers the fish I have caught) have been very explainable by one of the above methods, a combination, or something of that sort. BUT....did you hear about the fellow who tied his boat to a "stump" on one end, and was rowing to tie up to another so his boat would be completely steady when the first "stump" started diving for the bottom of the lake taking his boat with it? He barely had enough time to cut his rope before his boat was taken under to a murky grave! Could this have been part that....What ever it is in the lake that is eating the local fishermen? Probably not! Most likely a sinking log that was tangled with other under water debris, which he jostled loose while tying his boat and then moving to the next stump to tie off. Try traveling throughout the lake with a decent quality depth finder some time, and you'll find alot of "anomilies" through out the lake. This didn't used to be a lake, it was created about 500 years ago by a mud flow or lahar off of Mt. Rainier. That's why all the stumps in the lake, old trees from the valley that got flooded, some floating out of the dirt at the bottom creating large craters in the bottom, others falling over, waterlogged, and sinking to the bottom creating "shelves" on the bottom. Some were cut down during the last century, and some blew and broke in the winds. All of this leaves some awesome topography through out the lake from the surface, to the depths of the bottom 70 plus feet below in some spots. Whatever you chose to believe, or think you hear or see, Kapowsin lake is a local treasure trove of wild life and mystery. Spend a little time out doors, enjoy, and then encourage others to the same, it can be a GREAT experience! Zeek |

By the way...Amy, I am very sorry to hear about your brother and his friend, it always pains me when another sportman has any sort of unfortunate mis-hap, and my sympathies go to those they leave behind in the extreme cases as this is. In His love...I wish you peace

I lived in Kapowsin for the first 19 years of my life I use to walk down to the lake all hours of the night. The only thing I have heard out there is wild life and wild people having a party out there. I know is use to be "the place" to drink. I was always told to be safe if I go in the water due to all the logs out there.
Years back there was talk of someone buying the lake a turing it into a training lake for rowers but it didn't go through due to the logs and the work it would take to make that lake ready for rowers. Be safe out there and pick up your trash. |

Coop- Wow, I obviously forgot about this post and didn't check it for a year or so! Kapowsin History- AWESOME! My Family has been around here (Whitman Lake mostly) since the late '40s or early '50s when Kapowsin was still FULL of logs, and lakes were still FULL of fish. I have seen alot of change since I was a kid (30+ years ago), I can only imagine what you've around here. I'd love to hear from you, send me an e-mail if you would zeek@oldfordcrewcabs.com and we can exchange some stories!
Thanks- Zeek |
