Aunt: Girls took pills through night

After downing pills stolen from their KidsPeace counselor, two 16-year-old girls were disappointed that the methadone wasn't giving them the high they wanted, said one girl's aunt.

This is a very unfortunate incident, and my heart goes out to the families. It is so hard to understand why people in general, not just kids, feel the need to take drugs of any kind to just feel high. Something has to be missing in their lives.

My sympathies to the family who's daughter died. Those 2 girls never had a chance- I pray for the full recovery of the other girl.

While this is a sad story, they were in Kidspeace for a reason. They stole that medication. They had no right to do that, and if they knew they were looking to get high they also knew that there was a chance they'd overdose. If the girl who is still alive said she stole the medication how is this the fault of a counselor? I've seen these kidspeace counslors take all kinds of abuse from these kids. My one friend had her jaw broken when a girl kicked her in the face. It's unfortuate and sad that these counselors are trying to help these kids get better and now this woman is going to have to live with the fact that one of these girls died using her back medication.

I agree with Are you serious. These girls STOLE the medication from the counselor. They had no right doing that. While I do feel sorry for the families, it was their own fault that they stole and took the medication. The counselor didn't hand it to them. The counselor didn't put it in their mouths. The families should NOT blame the counselor nor kidspeace.

Hello, once again the parents looking to blame some one else for their responsibility. What were/are they doing at Kids Peace to begin with? Sorry she died but the parents have to take responsibility for the stealing, not the counselor.

"they never had a chance" ? they had a chance not to STEAL, they had a chance to not something that they had no clue about, and my best guess is that they had plenty of chances to make better decisions so they would not have landed at Kidspeace...these girls had every chance

I feel so sorry for the families of these two young girls. However, these girls STOLE the medication! It's not as if this medication was sitting out on the counter or anything. People nowadays are always looking to blame someone else instead of taking responsibility for their own actions.

I find KidsPeace funny. They do not hire that competent of people! My friend works for them and she says how the hire counselors that don't know what they are doing or do such a horrible job. I wanted to work there but she told me too many horror stories! It is quite scary! But it is true. These girls were at kidspeace for a specific reason- they had a drug problem and probably a behavioral one too! No suprise that they stole the medication! It's a shame that one died, but seriously? It was like suicide not homicide! Leave the counselor alone! She was legally allowed the medication!

I would like to ask each one of you that "If you were a counselor at a center where people are treated for narcotic addiction, would you bring a narcotic to work?" If it were a person who was at a treatment facility who was allowed to leave and then come back, brought the pills in, and then they were stolen, would you be saying the same thing? The pills should not have been there. Methadone is an opioid narcotic, and the counselor has to bear the responsibility for bringing them there. Also, how did the girls even know she had them????? I agree with one point you made serious, KidsPeace must have some trouble finding competent staff.

Years ago when I was about their age, a friend and I jumped off the bridge over the Deleware River , my friend drowned, he paid the price for a stupid dicission, end of story.

If I had a reason to take a prescribed medicine for pain I was having, and one of the doses I was to take was during work time, yes I would bring it to work. I would keep it in my purse. I wouldn't expect somebody to go through my purse and steal it, though. These kids had no right stealing the drugs. That's the bottom line. Nobody's fault but their own.

My thoughts exactly. The girls were there because noone else could handle them. I am sure the employee is very upset about this. The girls are old enough to take some the responsibility for their actions !!

Why do agencies like these make counselors transport clients in their own personal vehicle. Does their auto insurance cover this?

I hope you don't work in addiction treatment. The fact is, methadone is long-acting, and I'd just like to know why you would say that unless you don't know the time release of methadone. Please do some research. I know the girls have the responsibility of stealing it, but the counselor has the responsibility of bringing it there. If it had been Lortab or some other short-acting opiate, I could see it. But that's not the case. She had methadone. And there was no reason to have it at work.
