[QUiOTE who="Stella"]On the other hand I'm pretty much an upper crust snoot. My momma was a snoot before me and her momma was a snoot. We come from a very long line of snoots, American Royalty, if you will. We have been snotty snoots for generations. I think I will let my husband rent a room and I'll stay put in our mansion up here in PA.[/
Oh my. Bless your little heart. You really should stay up there in PA- in the safe, secure confines of your mansion, my dear. If you think that you are welcome everywhere your little husband wants to go, you are delusional. So, I really think it would be in your best interest to stay, up there, in your mansion, where you can feel safe and secure. You can spend your days thinking about your faithful, loving husband that misses you so. Bless your heart..

The money lives in the suburbs and small towns and villages outside of Asheville proper. Places like Biltmore Forest, Biltmore Lake, Cotswolds, Biltmore Park, Reems Creek, Hawks Landing, Poplar Ridge, Wildcat Cliffs, Windsong Estates and on and on and on.
They go into Asheville for live performance theatre, concerts, shopping and over-priced restaurants. When they get home the first thing they do is take a long soapy shower!
its true that there are many top 20 per centers and even some top 10 living outside of Asheville. Go a little further out and you will find the big money in and around Hendersonville and Yancey Co.. Look at Mountain Aire with its on airport and Mt Mitchell golf course dwellers. These places appear in the middle of nowhere but they are very wealthy communities. They are ofte summer people from elsewhere. You know them by where they live on the mountain. If it's near the top they spend a lot of time looking at their views, playing golf and tennis and fly fishing. But you won't see them represented in the distribution of wealth because they are not "residents." Asheville itself is made up of workers with small independent businesses and service workers who depend on the wealthy for their living. Minimum wage for wait staff is $2.13 per hour plus your tips. Minimum wage for any worker is $7.25 an hour. If you want to see a better distribution of wealth, a better looking and happier city, raise the minimum wage, pay wait staff a decent wage and tip well for good service. I know how wealthy people keep their wealth and that is often at the expense of students, and artists. Pick it up and share the wealth with Asheville.

Yes there are quite a few upper middle class and upper upper class families in Asheville. One family owns the Biltmore House itself. There is more old money here than in a lot of place, but the nouveau riche have found Asheville as well. Plenty of mcmansions on Reynolds Mountain the nouveau riche have built (but are frowned on by the locals and old money blue bloods). You have to have been around awhile to understand the pecking order of who's who. The Asheville and Biltmore Forest Country Clubs still contain their memberships with those who only associate with those who are members.

On the other side of town ABCCM, Manna and Eblen Charities are trying to feed and provide shelter to the rest of the people who live here. Quite the class division.

Truth is only those who are born here get treated well. If they are white and well connected well. What can anyone expect from a.

I'd have not moved here.moved here to work enjoy the outdoors and be quiet.being honest about corruption u witness does enge Der backlash from defensive white folks.yet my ancestors were here first.big learning experience and personal loss due to my time here.some good folks but few with any courage.

it's mostly lies in the tourism magazines unless you are an outdoorsy person- that aspect of the area is nice however it's mostly outside of Asheville. I love going camping and stuff. But Asheville as a city is horribly overrated. It gets really boring having a downtown area full of boutiquey shops and bars and nothing else. Gives the place a feeling like it isn't real or it's just a college town. It explains why natives have left for the most part (I'm 3rd generation) and the non-alcoholics generally move further away from downtown the longer they live here.

I can't say that you are wrong about natives leaving, but I don't see it. Born and raised here, have lots of family from here still here, many high school and college friends from here remain here... Very few of the circle throughout my life have left. Downtown is not the only section of town. I think life here is full, active and happy. I like running into people I know everywhere I go. There really isn't a better place to live.

Sorry, correction, i mean leaving the downtown areas. Plenty of natives outside town! We like it that way. Keep the alcoholic madness downtown hehe.

Sheet, no rich people want to live in Trasheville.
Rich people live up in New York. People too poor
to do that move to places like Trasheville and
try to pretend they're big deals. Pathetic goobers.

There are definitely some snotty people who have moved here. I just ignore them though, let them live their closed in lives in their gated mcmansion communities. Sounds pretty boring to me. Sure is nice here in the winter though when tourism is at a minimum and the halfbacks are in FL on vacation. The unfortunate thing is that in order to make decent money i end up in SC or something for 9 months out of the year. The last winter "storm" a few days ago was fun, i drove around and had the roads pretty much to myself lol. Too bad nothing was open which made absolutely no sense. It wasn't that bad.
