ASHEVILLE - Two and a half years after the Great Recession technically ended, more jobs remain scarce in the mountains.

The Asheville metro area only eked out 100 net new jobs for the entire year of 2011, according to figures released today by the N.C. Employment Security Division.
Buncombe County’s unemployment rate increased to 7.6 percent in December, up from 7.3 percent in November.
The Asheville metro area, which covers Buncombe, Madison, Haywood and Henderson counties, saw joblessness rise to 7.9 percent in December, up from 7.6 percent in November.
“It’s a disappointing job report,” said Michael Brown, economist with Wells Fargo Securities.“In the Asehville area, we saw only very marginal job gains with 0.1 percent growth for the year.”

Asheville used to be a special place
but has been destroyed by progressive liberals
and their agenda. Our heritage, architecture
they care nothing about historic preservation,
urban infill, bad values ect.
has killed the charm of this once beautiful place.

Its an expensive place to live and very narrow
minded. If your not an aetheist loving beer drinking
pot smoking hipster or an artsy yuppie
liberal who is green and organic the
place is not so enjoyable.
As for Asheville being a top dining destination
most of the so called nice restaurants serve
up oraganic free range crap or vegetarian food.
Even Tupelo honey in the last couple of years
their food is horrible now not much taste.

Im looking to move to a normal place.
A place not full of nutty people.

It's cute how you lot seem to think that Asheville is the only place on the face of the earth facing the issues you keep harping on. I don't know if you all think that because you've never traveled anywhere else to see anything of the rest of the world, or if it's just because you're so flaming stupid.

If you could see some of the meth-ravaged towns in Appalachian Kentucky and West Virginia, or if you spent any time at all in any big city and saw their drug problems and crime problems, you'd probably fill your pants.

Dipshits, the whole bunch of you.

Yes the chamber of commerce wants an Asheville
overlook on the blue ridge parkway.
They want to urbanize the rural parkway!
to spark interest in Asheville tourism!

Asheville has alot of tourist but having
an overlook up on the parkway wont
help bring people to Asheville unless
they want to come. People know
where Asheville is. I know lots of people
who bypass Asheville and stay up in Blowing
rock or Highlands because its rural.

Asheville is a cesspool and I can't want
until I move this summer.

With the drugs and beer comes increased crime. Most of the "independent" businesses downtown are nasty looking and filled with junk.

This Obama is a socialist trying to destroy our country. He is having his toadies run the Occupy Movement to try to rabble up the unemployment and shift the blame to corporations. Well it isn't working. WE the people now know Obama is a liar and a cheat who will do and say anything to get re-elected. Send this potsmoking crack sucking jerk back where he came from.Kenya.

I'll tell you how to change the WNC job market and make Asheville prosperous for young people: It is high time that taxpayers in WNC demand that UNCA not be run by a bunch of Ivory Tower Libs! A PUBLIC university like UNCA should be expected to offer a curriculum that will encourage high paying employers to locate in WNC. I'm talking about degree programs in engineering, math, science and a medical school. Not an artsy-fartsy taxpayer-supported university that offers very few bachelor's programs that a person can obtain a GOOD job without graduate school. If someone wants to get a 4 year liberal arts education, they can go to Carolina or some other large shcool that can afford to produce such graduates, along with employable grads. WNC can no longer AFFORD a 4 year university that robs your region of educated and EMPLOYABLE people. That's what you call BRAIN DRAIN: Smart college bound young people LEAVE WNC for college and then they never return. Because the employment base there is absolutely pathetic. Taking back UNCA is the first step for locals to take control of that region! As for me? I'm a brain drainer - I left WNC over a decade ago for college and live in the Triangle. My lifestyle could never be supported in Asheville. And I'll never return now.
