I visited Asheville twice.
The first time I loved it.
This time I did not like it
explored more of the town.
I was considering moving here before i found
out I didn't like it and
its a good thing cause Asheville is
damn expensive! Why though?
I find it hard to believe that rich people
would move to a dumpy old town.
One thing i love are the old art deco buildings
but developers will probably ruin them.
I was told by a friend Asheville is the most
expensive place in NC.?

It is entirely possible that it is the most expensive. It comes down to basics: do you want quality? Sure, Asheville's taxes are a bit high for my taste and I don't always agree with the goals of elected officials, but there is no denying the quality of Asheville. You want cheap? Try Winston or Durham (I hear Caswell County is cheap, also). The "dumpy old town" is a great place, and if you don't see that you would probably be better off elsewhere.

Might I recommend Charlotte? Culture sucks, but you can get Bobcat's tickets easy enough. They also have 4 or 5 Hooter's and a BUNCH of McDonald's for your discriminating taste.

This place used to have a low cost of living. However with the rapid influx of people, with deep pockets. Soon changed that. Not only is it very expensive in Asheville. It also has filtered out in the surounding areas. I was raised here and am now forced to look at moving. Sux but what can we do.

By the way, pardon me if I come off as a smart-alec, but I remember when the downtown area was closer to a DMZ than a place to be (think 1970-80's). This town has endured the worst and has had a Renaissance. I don't appreciate the "dumpy old town" tag being applied to a thriving community, even if it's old buildings are something to be admired.

Max, I sympathize. I also was born and raised here. Despite the increases (yes, retirees and trust-funders cause increases), I have come to realize that Asheville is a much nicer place to live than it used to be. While I understand economic reasons, I would feel the area had suffered a loss if you were to move.

Its so expensive because lieberal democrackkks run it and rich yankees have brought their city demands. Then there's all the public housing and all the government programs that taxpayers have to fund, so when you get this combination that has ruled NC/Avl for so many decades, the costs have overtaken the value. Its why we must STOP all these spending programs for people too lazy to work.

I wish i lived in Asheville! I just got back from there last weekend. This is a resort town with a cool old mountain town look. By the way Aspen has that look. The only thing I hate is its expensive!
Doesn't obama love asheville?

I am a medical professional who has two jobs to consider. One is in Asheville and one is in Greenville, SC. Both will pay about the same, but the cost of living is SOOOOOOO much more in Asheville. Is there any reason for me to really consider Asheville over Greenville at this point? My wife and I have two young children.

I want to move away from Asheville so bad I can't stand it. Moved here in 2007
and after 5 years I'm tired of how hectic
it is here. They have overdeveloped Asheville
in just a 5 year period.
( losing old buildings for condos, ect.)
8 lane highway coming in by 2020.
People are drunk here on a wednsday night.
Crime has risen in the last couple of
years.
Not a great place to raise kids.
Extremely liberal, very narrow minded people
and snobs here.
Overpriced on everything.
I live in apartments that I'm not sure
will be here cause of an 8 lane highway.
I have been to Greenville lovely place
more stable. I would live there!
Im going to move back home to west va.

And Greenville, which is unhappy that Atlanta and Charlotte aren't sprawling toward it fast enough and is working hard to thus take up the slack, isn't overdeveloped? Really? With Greenville really putting some effort into it, it won't be very long before there's an unbroken belt of suburban crap all the way from Atlanta to Charlotte. Greenville is an ugly mess, and is more overdeveloped than Asheville has ever had time to be.

I definitely agree with you on Greenville. Their goal is to have a suburban crap all the way from Atlanta to Charlotte.

Uncertain of the name the poster used that you responded to, but if you will look at the previous post you will notice they post under different names about Asheville. It's really laughable that they think individuals are unable to tell it is the same person, even though they used different names. This individual has lived in Asheville, been a visitor to Asheville and drove through the city at different times to base their opinion.

I've been in Asheville since 2000. Housing is way-over priced, and the cost of Living is outrageous compared to the available, livable wage employment. But if you love the mountains and beer, this really is the place to be. Unfortunately I'm not an affluent retiree and will soon have to leave this schizophrenic part of NC.

Desirable places are more expensive. Less desirable places are cheaper places to live. Simple. Who would want to live in the flat, commercialized area called Greenville? No thanks. I'll pay a few more bucks to be somewhere with scenery and character.

You just can't seem to post anything even close to truth, Cullen, you been here since maybe 2004 and affluent retiree or not, you are making it on your pension and social security so why you lying? Clearly you can't help yourself and you do so in this case to hide the fact you're using this alias to post BS. Yes, you are a sinner. WAKE UP!

Asheville has gotten expensive because of all the northerners who have moved here. Time for them to go home!

Asheville is expensive because northeastern yuppie trust fund supported idlers like myself have moved here. And we like it this way. Too expensive now for these ignorant trailer trash rednecks to live anywhere close to town.

It won't be expensive for long. Soon us "yankees" will finish making Asheville int a socialist utopia where only a few will live a high lifestyle...the people who run the new government like me. Hehehe. I'll have that new dacha on Kenilworth Lake before you know it whilst these rich of today will be standing in soup lines. Hehehe. A-Marx!
