The Pathology of Trolls

Understanding the underlying psychological problems of those who Troll.
A Troll is a person who visits websites to attack other posters. S/he has no position, not political,
not social; in short s/he has no ‘point’.
It is attack for attack sake.
In early days Trolls were often pre-pubescent high school boys. Powerless, cowards, the Internet
became their psychodrama where they could act out.
Those who moderated message boards would ban them, delete their posts, and so their victory
Where the school boy may mature into a responsible individual, the adult Troll has deep seated
The adult who feels powerless grasps the opportunity to use the anonymity of the Internet to
create an all powerful avatar who can attack others with impunity.
With very low self images, Trolls experience that rush of control when they, who are afraid to tell
their neighbor to turn down his radio, can spew invective with impunity.
Trolls post insulting comments hoping another poster will respond. When there is a response this
provides reinforcement of their behaviour.
As passive-aggressive mentalities who can not express hostility in direct ways, the Internet
allows them the perfect venue to vent.
As they desire attention they will join sites, for example, Triond, where instead of posting
submissions, they lurk in the unmoderated forum feeding their pathetic egos with each
response they receive.
No matter what the response, it is a response. One can be more insulting, threatening, it doesn’t
matter. The response, any response is what their pathology requires.
As Trolls are cowards, they run in packs. It is rare to see a single troll. They take strength from
each other. They delude themselves into believing they are in the majority and their views are
shared by ’everyone’.
Where average people may be proud of an achievement, trolls exalt over their ‘kills’; that is
persons they have ‘run off’ the forum, or message boards they have caused to close.
When users cease to post, that is Stop Feeding the Trolls, the forum becomes moribund. Trolls
have nothing to say. Once there is no one to attack they may begin flaming each other, then
cease to log on to the site.
Trolling is the sad attempt at self validation, just as taking drugs, trolling demands more and
more to feed the addiction that props up low self-esteem.
‘Deindividualization’ is a term social psychologists use to explain the reduction in the sense of
one’s own identity. In online communication the Troll is distant from the victim and prone to
Behind the nickname used by the Troll is a pathetic individual who feels helpless. Having to bottle
hostility due to physical/intellectual/ emotional weakness. They can not distinguish between positive attention, praise, approval, affection and negative attention, criticism, hatred, disapproval.
All Attention = Good.
There is some amount of sadism in the psyche of Trolls and that hint of Asperger’s syndrome,
where they can not feel remorse for their actions.
Experienced moderators recognise that no matter how one humiliates a Troll s/he can never believe
s/he ‘lost’. The viable method is to ’suck up’ to the Trolls, gain their trust, at such time they become
quite easy to smack down.

Oy Vey, really? OMG you're so pathetic. Your retorts are straight out of an eleven year old's playbook. Perhaps you aren't pathological at all, just suffering from arrested development. Perhaps you simply need to ripen mentally catching up with your chronological age, or maybe it's early onset dementia like your hero Ronald Raygun

You know what I think, this Thomas you speak of all the time is just one more of the many characters you've made up to occupy your dream world. I don't think the guy really exists.

Oy Vey, really? OMG I am so pathetic. My fart mouth is straight out of an eleven year old's playbook. Perhaps I am pathological and all, just enjoying from arrested development. Perhaps I simply need to ripen my farts more before letting them escape. I love my hero, Son Of Satan Barat Hussein Obama, who by hook or crook will turn this country into a Muslim Socialist Potentate with me as one of his official snitches. I'll point out who the real Americans are so Obnama's brown shirts can arrest them. Chortle chortle. And if I am lucky, Obam awill let me rub his feet at night, annoint them with bat droppping, and then me lick them clean. Oh I can only hope and dream!

Why Do People Enjoy Being Internet Trolls?
Ans: it is a kind of power rush or ego trip to be a troll. Being online is a place that is largely free of perceived consequences... an insecure person can get a sense of power online, without ever having to face someone directly. With the Internet being a world of imagination and fantasy for some, cowardly users can forge an alter ego for themselves, and act out their feelings of anger and inadequacy. It's sad and unfortunate that our advanced communications also brings out the darker side of many people.

Where Do You Find Internet Trolls?
Ans: internet trolls are sadly common. They can be found wherever online users interact with each other. Trolls will abuse others in news blogs, political discussion forums, hobbyist communities online, Facebook pages, torrent search engine conversations, and in online game chat. Trolls have become very common in news sites. Many online news sources now avoid using open comment features because so many internet trolls will use this venue to post abusive comments as responses to news articles.
How Exactly Do Internet Trolls Abuse Others?
Ans: internet trolls seek to be disruptive and hurtful by using any of the following techniques:
Trolls will post abusive and hurtful comments directed at a specific person (aka "flaming" another person)
Trolls will incite broad arguments and provoke angry responses by making controversial statements.(e.g. racism, religious intolerance, bigoted or elitist views, mysogyny, extreme political views)
Trolls will narcissistically dominate conversations, trying to make themselves the center of attention.(e.g. nonstop comments about themselves and their accomplishments; repeated self-centered statements and bragging)
Trolls will start many off-topic threads, seeking to derail users from the focus of an online community.

What Is an Internet 'Troll'? How Should I Deal With Trolls?

Question: What Is an Internet 'Troll'? How Should I Deal With Trolls?
Answer: An internet 'troll' is an abusive or obnoxious user who uses shock value to promote arguments and disharmony in online communities. Named after the wicked troll creatures of children's tales, an internet troll is someone who stirs up drama and abuses their online anonymity by purposely sowing hatred, bigotry, racism, mysogyny, or just simple bickering between others. Trolls like a big audience, so they frequent blog sites, news sites, discussion forums, and game chat. Trolls thrive in any environment where they are allowed to make public comments.
At the lighter end of the troll spectrum, trolls can be personal friends who like to goad and joke with their buddies online. In this case,'trolling' will mean 'stop hassling me, or I won't invite you to my birthday party'.
At the harsher end of the troll spectrum, trolls are cruel and malicious users who want to set an online community on fire with hate and discord.
The Sad Truths of Internet Trolls:
Trolls are immune to criticism and logical arguments. True trolls cannot be reasoned with, regardless of how sound your logical argument is.
Trolls do not feel remorse like you and me. They have sociopathic tendencies, and accordingly, they delight in other people having hurt feelings.
Trolls consider themselves separate from the social order.
Trolls do not abide by etiquette or the rules of common courtesy.
Trolls consider themselves above social responsibility.
Trolls gain energy by you insulting them.
Trolls gain energy when you get angry.
The only way to deal with a troll is to ignore him, or take away his ability to post online.
How Should I Deal With Internet Trolls?
You cannot win with a troll. Publicly retaliating against them just fuels their childish need for attention. There are only 3 reliable ways to deal with trolls, all of which focus on removing their audience, removing their power, and depriving them of the attention they seek.
For a casual or emergent troll: completely ignore the person's postings. While it is difficult for most users to to let a troll have the last word, this tactic successfully takes the wind out of a casual troll's sails.
For repeating troll offenders: report them to the moderators of the system. If enough people report the toll, this will often prompt the moderators to take action (see number 3 below)
Have the moderators take away the troll's ability to post online. This will commonly mean that the troll is kicked from the system, or blocked by IP address. Even better is when the troll is allowed to continue posting, but unbeknownst to him: all of his postings are deleted from everyone else's view. This will lure the troll into wasting his efforts while still feeling proud of his childish antics. This moderator move is sometimes called 'muting' or 'bonzo-ing' the offender.

Why Do I Enjoy Being An Obnoxious Internet Troll? Answer: it is a kind of power rush or ego trip to be a troll. And since being online is a place that is largely free of perceived consequences I can act like a tough guy even though in person I am very timid. An insecure person like me, Thomas Hoffman, can get a sense of power online, without ever having to face someone directly. With the Internet being a world of imagination and fantasy for some, cowardly users like me, Thomas Hoffman, can forge an alter ego for themselves, and act out my feelings of anger and inadequacy. It's sad and unfortunate that our advanced communications also brings out the darker side of me, Thomas Hoffman.

The irony in this thread is that is was started by the biggest troll in the area, and he probably ranks nationally. Yet at the same time, he is evidently blind to his own culpability as a big troll himself. This person, Thomas Hoffman, posts people's phone, home address, links to their personal information and photos. Then threatens his target with someone coming over and physically assaulting him/her.
Thomas, get some counseling. And take a good look in the mirror. What you are railing against is YOUR OWN SHADOW SIDE.
Never mind. I doubt you can get it at your advanced age. So in the meantime many of us here will be entertained by your impotent threats and laughable hypocrisy evidence through your own projection. ROFL.

Thomas may bear some of the marks of a troll, but you bear more of them. You hide, he doesn't. That makes you a coward. And in the definition of a troll is an element that he is a coward who sneaks into a newsgroup or forum for the malicious purpose of vandalizing it. That's what you are doing.
As for Thomas I don't particularly care for him either, but at least he doesn't snivel around anonymously and skulk like you do. And I have never seen him threaten anyone except maybe with a lawsuit. But most of that is because you have attacked innocent members of his family.
I think Thomas's vice is in his censorship. He believes in having perfectly legitimate posts disappear, and I believe he has a hand in it, and for that I believe he's a bit sleazy, but not near as sleazy as you.
What is your name? You won't answer, of course, because you are a coward.
