PERPLEXED - that's one heck of a gamble for the AG to make to try and save the state some money.

Especially considering that if it's found out HE'S lying, and slandering these women, then the state will still be out money. And he'll very likely be OUT of a job and possibly IN a jail cell!

I admit that "bizarre" does not even begin to do it justice, but I can't imagine the AG trying to in effect 'frame' people for a non-existent crime almost a decade after the fact.

I guess this would explain why one of these women is currently in Broughton Hospital. If I were responsible for killing 8 people I would go crazy to.
Ms. Banks I agree with you that if I were responsible for killing 8 people I'd go crazy but there is a possibility that this person is using "BROUGHTON" to have her lawyers state that she is not mentally able to stand trail. In my opinion she just got caught after all for 7 years she has not been in "BROUGHTON" sounds like a trick to get less time. Ms Banks I am truly sorry for your loss. I pray the people so hurt in all this mess will get Justice for the ones who lost their lives.

Sounds like what goes around comes around. I just hope the lawmen really don't rush through this case and make sure that the TRUTH comes back to haunt the persons responsible for these 8 murders. Does anyone reading this know just what the sentencing might be?[assuming that putting these criminals under the jail won't be an option.]

Now do I have this right for seven long years this fire that killed 8 of Mitchell county people was ruled an accident? Seems like an awful long time to be lying to the people. Now suddenly this jail fire is being reopened because someone feels this was a intentional fire set to murder 8 people? I am left scratching my head. We don't exactly have the best S.B.I. folks or law enforcement in North Carolina do we. This should have been solved way back in 2002. How many folks got $70,000.OO dollars from the state? Hope they saved it to make our lawyers richer! I pray justice and truth will come to the folks who lost loved ones in this terrifing jail fire.

I have read about this senseless jailhouse fire. Was the truestee left alone by the Jailer? If so why? Why did this Davis woman show up at the time the jailer was gone and only the truesteewas watching the jail? Seems the jailer has some responsibility in this fire because the jailer is not suppose to leave their post I don't care if the person is a truestee??? Seems if the jailer had stayed at the jail this seemingly set-up would not have happened? Who hired such a jailer?

This whole jail fire is so needless. Little children will be without a father and mothers and daddys will be without their sons. That boy who was trying to better his life by going back to school why his life was just beginning. I Hope JUSTICE is servrd to the fullest extent,* counts of murder in my opinion should call for the "Death Penalty."

Excuse me the sheriff, the jailer who would not go upstairs and at least try to unlock those inmates shoul in my opinion be held accountable for their neglect in this Fire my Lord this must have been a botched investigation from day one. I can't beleive this jailer was hired to work at another correctional facility. Are these people kinfolk? Who is held accountable for letting a jail not be fit to even hold dogs much less humans and the sheriff says they were "Good old Boys" Lord help us I know Mitchell County is a poor county but does a jail have to burn down like this before someone stands up to the plate and says this is an AWFUL jail and something needs to be done now" What kind of county commisioners would let the jail be such a rat hole. That Jailer sould never have gotten another job at all in my opinion.I wonder if she hears them begging her to unlock the doors so they can have a chance to live??????????

I don't mean this to sound wrong but what kind of idots were running that jail that caught fire and killed 8 people. This is 2009 and the terrible deadly fire happened in 2002. I have heard these people were slow but this takes the cake. Why did this jailer not stay at the jail all the time..why did she wait for the sherriff to arrive when she could have saved 8 lives. People up ther just don't have any common sense

The S.B.I., the jailer and the sherriff and commissioners sure do have some explaining to do about that run-down sorry jail where those men died an awful death.

Mitchell County needs help educating their law enforcement, their jailers and their commissioners. They have sorely failed to do their jobs.

NOW I READ ALL THESE RUMORS OF THESE TWO GIRLS ARE BEENING FRAMED? wHY WASN'T THEY CONFRONTED IN THE BEGINNING? SOMEONE SURE HAS A LOT OF EXPLAING TO DO ABOUT WHY THESE 2 WOMEN WASN'T ASSRESTED IN THE FIRST PLACE IF THEY ARE GUILTY OF KILLING 8 PEOPLE BY BURNING THEM TO DEATH. wHY WASN'T THAT JAILER ASSERESTED FOR HOMICIDE BY NEGLENCE SINCE THOSE MEN WERE SCREAMING FOR HER TO UNLOCK THE JAILDOORS AND SHE SAID "WAIT UNTIL THE SHERRIFF COMES?" NO QUESTION I WOULD HAVE OPENED THOSE DOORS COME SHERRIFF OR NO SHERRIFF i WOULD HAVE HELPED THEM.

If you want to really find out some information on this fire go to the Mitchel County newspaper archives. There were thousands of complains made about the condition of the jail. My Uncle Edmond Banks was a wonderful man who didn't deserve to die like that. He never got to see his son get married, see his grandchild, grow old with his mother. He was the youngest of 13 kids. 9 girls and 4 boys. My family should have not had to go through this. What really makes it bad, even though we may get justice, bringing the topic back brings the pain back. As my Dad told me the other day. You think you are over the hurt, and someone opens it back up. I pray that this time these familys get justice. Have you ever had to go to 5 funerals in one week? I did and I wouldn't want anyone to experience this. Please make these jails safer. Thank you for letting be blow off steam. God Bless you

The proscution will not ever have sufficient evidence to re-open this case. This is a he said she said rumors and rumors are not admitted in a court of law. This info about the S.B.I. didn't have a dog to sniff fingernail polish is years down the roadand now where the jail used to be are flowers and a waterfall. No chance of ever really getting any facts. This is sad for the families who lost loved ones. The investigation was so botched none of us may never ever know what really happened but God does!

I have to agree with Charlie. This cas was haistily investigated by incompentent folks who should have called in the Feds. Too much water has run under the bridge. Toomany mistakes were made in haste. Rumors will not stand up in court. This grave error has surely cost the tax payers in North Carolina in a time of economic crisis.

i was in that jail fire and i think mitchell county should be held accountable 4 sum or if not all the blame. The place was condemed 2 or 3 times i also think that who ever started it should be as well. The everyday things I have got 2 deal with. I WOULD NOT WISH THIS ON ANYONE. ppl say they no but do they really & truly no?

My uncle died in that fire. I always knew it was not an accident. Who ever did this may get away, but they will face GOD one day. And just maybe he will send them to HELL so they will know what it is like to burn to death.
Hi Sandy,
What was you uncles name? I am trying to contact the deceased families because a facility near there is not being checked and no one cares. Do you know where I may find such a list? I am trying to prevent the same from happening again in TN. These yoyos only give lip service to caring about the safety of the inmates. If it costs one time all bets are off. One cannot place a dollar value on a human life.
Thanks
