A 126 year old American Holiday that Tyson Foods will not honor anymore but they will now have Eid al-Fitr to replace it. They also put in a room just for Muslims to pray. You can't pray to God in school but you can pray to Allah at work. Am I the only one that sees a problem here.

If they wanted to add a holiday that's okay but don't take away an American holiday to replace it with another. And why did 20% of the workers get their own prayer room when the other 80% do not. If you are going to put in one prayer room for one religion then you need to do it for all of them. I guess the next step is prayer rooms in the schools for the Muslim faith.

I live near one of the Tyson plants..they got rid of the hispanic illegals to please ICE and now I guess they must have brought in more immigrants. I am appalled that the Muslim holiday is more important than our Labor Day. You're right Taz.

I wonder what percentage of people living in America are of the Muslim faith..is this the way our country is going to continue going ?

I don't see a problem. I think its good Tyson is accomodating their employees. It says the contract was agreed to by 80 percent of the union's 1,000 members at the plant.

But it does say "News of the holiday change has prompted some anger on local Web message boards."

Obviously, it's prompted some anger on not so local message boards, too.

I can't believe that this is not on the National News. Furthermore, Labor Day is a Federal Holiday. I am almost sure that these are not negotiable. How can a company this large not understand the importance of "our country" and its cultures and customs. Can they not read.... One nation under God.

Hi, Bonzi. I don't think so. If that were the case, Walmart would be closed on Labor Day.:)

Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) establishes the following public holidays for Federal employees.

Tuesday, January 1 New Year’s Day
Monday, January 21 Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, February 18* Washington’s Birthday
Monday, May 26 Memorial Day Friday, July 4 Independence Day
Monday, September 1 Labor Day
Monday, October 13 Columbus Day
Tuesday, November 11 Veterans Day
Thursday, November 27 Thanksgiving Day
Thursday, December 25 Christmas Day

Hi Cat....

It doesn't mean you have to be closed it means you have to be payed for it.

Many places are 24/7/365

But the federal holidays are observed and you get payed for them if you work or not.

Private companies only have to pay you for the federal holidays if it is either by a contract or in their company policy.

I heard on the noon news today that the union has now changed its mind and employees will have Labor Day off...due to public outcry !!!! They have added an extra personal day to the annual schedule so that employees of muslim descent can take that holy day off if they choose to.

Chalk one up to our side !!!

I have to wonder though if Tyson lost any business because of this bone headed decision by the union ?

The RWDSU membership voted overwhelmingly Thursday to reinstate Labor Day as one of the plant's paid holidays, while keeping Eid al-Fitr as an additional paid holiday for this year only.

"This means that in 2008 only, Shelbyville employees will have nine paid holidays," Lawson said.

The union says that beginning in calendar year 2009, a worker who does not observe Eid al-Fitr "will have the option of selecting another day as a paid Personal Day at their discretion."
