"...the DOE suggested that Lunenburg and North Middlesex explore possible consolidation and ultimately building a new high school for the expanded district."

Correction...the initial suggestion that the two districts merge to form a mega-merger came from NMRSD superintendent Maureen Marshall at the Oct. 27, 2009 meeting between NM and Lunenburg to explore potential opportunities for consolidation, NOT further regionalization.

Realizing that a mega-merger this size would allow them to reduce their financial burden of supporting both districts independently, DESE staff jumped on Marshall's suggestion that the two districts merge. However, note that DESE representative Christine Lynch stated, during the Nov. 30, 2009 NMRSD SC meeting, that, while there would be an initial cost savings in the construction of one school to serve a merged district, history shows there is NO LONG TERM SAVINGS in sustaining a larger regionalized district.

Another band-aid solution rendered by Maureen Marshall to solve an issue with long-term consequences...no long range plan, no actual financial savings. Why should she care, anyway? She'll be long gone with a padded pension when the bills come due.

Marshall says the school district could be in for some unexpected cash through the federal race to the top. Well, it's not her money to spend. She would only spend it on more administrators who don't know what the helk they're doing.
The money should be used to hire teachers to decrease the ever growing class sizes.

The Race to the Top money has to be spent specifically on instruction and there are guidlines to provided assessment data to go with that instruction as well. The money cannot be used for something that is already in existance and cannot be used for hiring teachers, debt, etc. Also, the money is temporary.
