Unitil proposes increases for higher usage - Sentinel & Enterprise

Full story: Sentinel & Enterprise

Unitil Corp. on Friday proposed rate changes with the state that it says will result in no increase in electricity rates for average customers, and will increase average natural-gas bills by about $20 per month.

Unitil is only using this as a ploy to get the rate payer to pay for more benefits for themselves and for the ice storm.

Why should we pay for pipe replacement, they make millions off of us and provide limited service

If this is not to increase revenue, then they have (once again) down an incredibly poor job of why they are restructuring. This company doesn't do ANYTHING if there is not something in it for them.

And anyway, what would be the justification of DECREASING large corporate rates and INCREASING, the rates of residences...some as high as 7%. They are just amazing - and I don't mean that as a compliment.

As residents:
you get surcharged for under use
you get surcharged for use
and you already pay through the ass as an average customer

Unitil's rates stink. Using between 570 and 580 kwh in both here and FL I pay $106+ here and in FL $61 or so. There is no doubt Unitil is at the top of the rate scale. So they need an increase why???

Why give a break to large corporations and screw over the small residential customers? How can they possibly justify that?

Btw, the way the "inappropriate" word I used was not a curse word but simply " s-c-r-e-w." That IS exactly what's happening.

Bottom line, this is an across the board increase by UNITIL, nothing less. It is hard to believe that the average is 600KW per month. Before any rate increase is every given to UNITIL, they should prove their services have improved. Watch the weather, another ice storm is coming, maybe we will only be without power for a few days instead of a few weeks.

No way Unitil is going to increase rates. Unitil must clean-up its acts.

Fire Unitil.

You may have the option of signing up with another utility company and paying their rates instead of Unitil's.

Sorry, Joe from Kokomo, there are no other suppliers for residential customers in the Unitil area and there never has been. The only Unitil customers that have that option are businesses.

600KWH a month you got to be kidding me. I have all efficency lighting in my house, use only the lights in the room that I am in, have new eco friendly appliances, and still use over 1,000KWH per month. During the Ice storm unitil estimated my monthly bill at like 1700KWH and this was with 15 days of no power, so who is kidding who here?

I agree Unitil did this to everyone after the ice storm. I have a Government energy inspector coming to my house this week to determine why my house uses so much electricity and to see what my options are for upgrading my heating system.

Immoral and unethical profits being squeezed from those who can ill afford the increases. Look at the back of your bill and look and see how many double dips there are in their explanation. Default charges that charge the same things over again under what they refer to as Distribution charges. Distribution charges and default service charges are collected for for the same things. There is no choice (monolopy!!!) for residential customers. That privilege is reserved for businesses (who seem not to want to move here cause it's way too expensive to heat and light). So we get charged more and more and more. If we had a choice between Uniswill and Mass Electric we would see significantly lower bills. If we had a municipal non profit energy company for Fitchburg and other Massachusetts victims of uniswills greed we would see hugely reduced energy costs and much more accountability and service from our neighbors. The jobs would stay in this area and it would create a much more amenable climate for businesses to invest here, where we would see an enormous uptick in new and bigger businesses eager to relocate to the area just to save energy costs. One little municipal energy company change would create a new vitalized Fitchburg where our best and brightest would stay instead of deserting this region. This is not some scheme, this would be real positive long term change to OUR home!

It's time for less expensive change!!!

I would love to see if Northern Utilities bills have skyrocketed since uniswill bought them... If anyone knows a previous Northern Utilities (now owned by uniswill) that can report on how their bills have increased I think their input would make our case for ending the reign of the evil empire, Uniswill, more possible. That and firing the whole state utilities board who serve the energy concerns of the entire state!

The Time Is Now. Call Representative DeNatalie and stress the fact that this needs to happen soon.

Just got the most recent Unitil bill... We choose to celebrate the Holiday season by putting up lights and decorating the tree..... makes me want to rethink since the bill was $315....(an additional ~$75 -$95).

For profit companies have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders first.... which puts the customer second. They get away with it since their is no competition. The residents have no voice as the AG, City Council, Local Politicians - do nothing.

If Fitchburg is serious about its community and its business climate, they should strong arm Unitil into more favorable rates.

Ever since Uniswill created their own wireless metering system there has been all sorts of people being charged for power they couldn't possibly use. The created this system to market all over the country so it is in their best interest to cover up all the miscalculations that have cropped up. They can't afford to have this system look bad so they are covering their a**es and making us pay. And even if it doesn't market well and turns out to be a bad investment then they just make us pay for their bad idea (look at transition charges).
With the weather forecast calling for up to 1/2 an inch of ice for tomorrow we could see a replay of the December storm of two years ago. Batten down the hatches and get your generators up and running, just in case uniswill ignores us again, as punishment for our continued outrage! We must not let this outrage continue or we will be done as a possible destination for large businesses!

It already happens that way. We pay, in the distribution charge, for their supposed energy conservation programs. So the less energy we use we pay more!!

Or move the DPU to allow for municipal utily company to be created... That is what we need. A non profit municipal utility company, like before Uniswill bought Fitchburg gas and electric! That would end the death grip this stinking company has on us all!
