Ashby could have bought this same building years ago and converted it to a police station, if they did'nt want it then, why would they want it now?
They would not be buying a building, they would be leasing it. And its not the existing building they would be leasing, its a new building that is larger and more appropriate for a police function.
As for regionalizing the police...NO WAY. This proposal to regionalize would eventually leave Ashby without police protection several days per week as Townsend increases the amount of money it is asking Ashby to contribute to the police service..just like they do with the school department. Not to mention Ashby would also lose out on income generated by the police department in the form of firearms license fees, warrant arrest fees, marijuana fees, report fees, and several others. Money taken in by these functions is deposited into the towns general fund. Ashby would lose that income. Then it would have to pay unemployment costs for at least 3 full time dispatchers, plus probably another full police officer. This is a bad idea and results in no real savings to the town, but does result in the gradual loss of services.
