Ga. Senior Class to Try Integrated Prom

“People still think of how life was 20, 30 years ago”

Breaking from tradition, high school students in this small town are getting together for this year's prom.

Prom night at Turner County High has long been an evening of de facto segregation: white students organized their own unofficial prom, while black students did the same.

This year's group of seniors didn't want that legacy. When the four senior class officers _ two whites and two blacks _ met with Principal Chad Stone at the start of the school year, they had more on their minds than changes to the school's dress code. Read more

It is about time. I remember trying to have an integrated prom or even a dance 20 years ago. I was informed that some student would not attend because of their parents. Even after that, for my 10yr reunion I attempted to have the reunion together and it failed. I am glad to say that last year we celebrated our 20yr reunion together. Time for change has been long overdue. When you learn better, you do better.

Word around town is there will be a party on the same night. I guess we haven't come that far. Plus, only about half of the tickets have sold. I, for one, don't think they should be forced to integrate the prom, if they don't want to. I think it would be good to do so, as long as it's what the students want.
