Did anyone see the photo of the car, or what was left of it? If the bus was traveling at normal speeds, how fast must that BMW have been traveling to sustain that much damage? State Patrol says alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the accident. They forgot to mention another: stupidity!

Might want to know the facts before you start judging. Don't believe everything you read or hear. How do you know the bus driver isn't lying to save his skin or the bus company he works for. There's no way the BMW can look like that while the bus was doing 65mph, which he says he was. Both vehicles traveling at that rate of speed would not have had that kind of impact on the BMW with no damage to the bus. That kind of damage comes from the bus braking to fast or coming to a complete stop.

A sad event. Very sorry for his friends and family.

But if the bus had stopped or played brake games the rear end damage to it would have been worse. Possibly a simulataneous lane change, with the BMW going very fast- we will probably never know exactly. Indications are that the BMW driver was not driving defensively, unfortunately. Could be the bus driver had more to do with it than he claims, but that doesn't change the alcohol claim. Many of us have gotten lucky when we had too much and got too aggressive- this young man didn't. I live right there, people just roar along that stretch to the I-70 on-ramp where 6th merges- you have to switcheroo 2 lanes- bad any time.

I knew this man..my son and his sons are best friends. I think it's totally unfair to put fault at the man who cannot tell his side of the story. It doesn't make sense..Steve was coming home from work. He is a good safe driver. Do they not have cdot cameras to maybe help revile the truth. I'm not buying it that Steve one of the nicest and soft spoken man..drove so fast to crash into the back of this bus. Please investigate this for the sake of his family. He deserves he justice as well.

Scorpion, first, it was snowing, drizzling, raining, whatever. No one said the bus was doing 65 mph. We can only assume the bus was traveling at a speed appropriate for conditions, presumably less than 65 mph. You also said that "both vehicles traveling at that rate of speed would not have had that kind of impact on the BMW... You are incorrect here. If both vehicles were traveling at THAT rate of speed(65 or whatever mph), they never would have met on that highway. You are also erred in assuming that the bus braked. What's to say that the bus was traveling 45 mph and the BMW was traveling 100 mph? That's like slamming into a wall at 55 mph, more than anough to cause that damage to the front end of a BMW or any car.

No matter how we look at this, This was such a tragic event. There seems to be alot of judging on the driver of the BMW. We will never know the WHOLE truth to this. Because news reports alcohol involved, everyone is just going to assume he was at total fault!! This was NOT a person who messed around when driving. This should definitely be investigated further. Why hasn't the driver of the bus been given an alcohol test or drug test??
Steve...you will ALWAYS be loved and missed!!! THoughts and prayers are with the family.

If the driver of the bus holds a CDL, which he should be, he would have had to have taken a blood test/breathalizer. That's the law with a CDL anytime there is personal injury involved in an acciedent.

If alcohol was a factor with the BMW driver, then yes he is at fault, a tragic accident yes, but if ol' boy was drinking he was at fault no matter.

I'm surprised there aren't more serious accidents at that spot where Indiana merges into 6th westbound. You have to get over 2 lanes almost immediately to stay on 6th, and fight all the traffic trying to get over to the right to get onto 70 westbound- it's a bad intersection. It does sound like the driver of the BMW messed up, darn it- I heard all the sirens- I live very close, too. My condolences to his family and friends, and I'm glad more people weren't hurt, although this is bad enough, certainly.

First of all, to all who are not family or friends and post to this TRAGEDY, have RESPPECT!!! Family and friends read these comments, and it is very hurtful to read mean, unfounded comments.
Second, to "politically incorrect", the bus driver stated to a VERY reliable source, who is involved in the investigation, that he was doing the speed limit of 65 MPH. The rate of speed of the BMW has not been determined officially, but is speculated to be well above the speed limit. Both vehicles were traveling Westbound, in the middle lane, according to the bus driver. If the driver of the BMW was at fault due to speed and alcohol, as SPECULATED, then why was there not more damage to just the front end, and why would the driver slam into the bus??? Could the driver of the bus have suddenly slowed down, or switched lanes illegally, and the driver of the BMW did not have enough time to get out of the way, and that is why the driver side door and front was so severly crushed????
Now, just becaue the driver had been drinking, and we do not the level of alcohol in his system yet, that does not mean that he was so intoxicated that alcohol CAUSED the driver to crash into the back of the bus. It seems that alcohol is being blamed, when it should be seen as a FACTOR, not the CAUSE.
Lastly, to "alfadawg", the driver of the bus did no have to take a blood/breatalizer from State Patrol!! It is my understanding as well, that all CDL drivers have to undergo a mandatory test when involved in any accident. The drivers employeer should have had the driver submit to one, but the results will not be known to the general public. Too bad.
So, to all, just remember, we know what the driver of the bus said, the driver of the BMW will never be able to state his side of the story, the investigation is still ongoing, and this TRAGEDY DOES HAVE VICTIMS WHO DESERVE, RESPECT, SUPPORT, AND THE TRUTH.

I can't believe people could write such awful things about somebody that they don't even know especially if family reads this. You people don't know him or you don't even know what the cause of the accident is you people keep saying that there was alcohol involved but you don't know for sure please have a little respect for his family they just lost someone that they loved and cared about. Rest in peace cuz you'll be missed
