Signs of respect for soldiers in Sullivan

Full story: Chicago Tribune

The soldiers' names were first nailed to Sullivan's lampposts in 2004, not long after the town watched a seemingly swift victory in Afghanistan on TV and before the bloodshed in Iraq demanded more and more troops.

Not to be too literal, but Memorial Day is for honoring the war dead, not those actively serving. Veteran's Day is a more appropriate time for the above-mentioned endeavor.

And depending on the military members and interpretation of intent behind the naming, Veterans Day was intended to honor those alive, but no longer serving in the Armed Forces. Some just need to be able to remember. They honor those near them who have died as well. The signs are a remembrance to say Thank You to those still serving.

Al Qaeda, and Taliban have some good ideas too. Barack Hussein Obama is doing good by merging U.S. Western Capitalistic ideals with fundamental Islam-Muslim societies. I'm sure because of his election the migration of Muslim/Taliban/Al Qaeda ideals into the U.S. will be evident soon. It's what america wants and needs. Memorial day will most likely be replaced with a Taliban holiday. What are americans doing in Iraq, no WMD's were never found. That was the reason, did you american change it's reason, probably, and most likely irrelevent

He has done no such thing. Offer some proof, idiot! You should be put in a rubber room and never let out. Better yet, I want you arrested for treason, tried, and hanged. Isn't that what you wingnuts used to scream when anyone dared to oppose Bush?

Honor them all, dead and alive. We owe all a debt we can never repay to them. May they and their families be blessed.

I just put up my flag in front of the house this morning. In the United States that I was raised in back in the 1950s and early60s, that was common practice by most families every Memorial Day(May 30th),4th of July, Labor Day, Flag Day (June 14th) and Veteran's Day (originally Armistice Day, Nov 11th). This is a tradition that was largely abandoned by the mid-1970s. Many of these holidays, like Veteran's Day and Memorial Day, have had their original intentions modified over the years as our historical events changed. It has come about by a genuine concern and respect for all our troops , as well as our history as a nation, including all those who have fought, and sometimes died, trying to correct what was wrong and make it better for all of us. No......flying the flag doesn't automatically make you a patriot, anymore than going to church every Sunday, but hating your neighbor, makes you a good Christian.
Believing that the flag represents all of our ideals that this country was supposed to have been founded upon, and standing up for them respectfully, is what makes an American
a sincere patriot. Freedom isn't free; it never has been, isn't now,and never will be. May God Bless and watch over all of our troops, and the people who remember and appreciate what the troops have done for us. We wouldn't have a country without them, much less freedom or liberty and justice for all.

Thank God somebody knows the difference!!! I support our troops one billion percent but Veteran's Day on Nov. 11 is the appropriate time to remember and thank those soldiers and veterans who are alive. Memorial Day, the last Monday in May, is the time to honor and remember those who are dead.

Why is it that all the vets since WWII have all these problems? Drinking and drug abuse. I guess the military today is not your grandpappy's military. Nothing but losers.

Durbin spouted off then Daley called him to task and forced Durbin to apologize. Who am I parroting, the Chicago Tribune for reporting this information?

Daily Horoscope for December 15

Pisces

This is a great day for understanding what's going on under the surface of things and for tuning into the subtle messages that others are sending out. For instance, someone may say one thing yet you'll be utterly convinced that they really mean something quite different. However, they won't like it if you say so, so you'll have to maintain a tactful and discreet silence.
