I love that an employer would help support bike commuting. I'm disappointed that the photo accompanying the article shows the biker without a helmet and apparently riding through the middle of a street.

Rode to work yesterday. At the corner of Soquel and Frederick, some oh-so-important-on-a-cell phone-woman in a white Lexus, cut the corner too sharply(no turn signal of course) into the clearly marked BIKE LANE. Missed hitting my handlebar with her side mirror by six inches. I was tempted to smash her side window with my elbow, but not after what the UCSC brats did the other night. I hate it when common sense gets the better of me.

Today is a great day for a bike-commute. I took one particularly scenic Felton to downtown Santa Cruz route this morning; half on trails and the other on roads. Drivers were courteous and it was a beautiful ride, taking about 10 minutes longer than the door-to-door car-commute. Hope to repeat it this evening. Get out and ride!

Just stay off Mission. We don't need more dead bikers just so we can gloat over a silly bike to work stunt.

I bet she even signaled her intent and you decided to make an issue of it by steering as close to her car as you could. I've seen you bozos in action and I have no sympathy left for your arrogant attitudes. And I'm just waiting for one of you hot-heads to touch my car in traffic. I'll kick your butt and cram your bike up your nose when you break MY window.

Ace sounds a little wound up. Maybe taking a bike ride across town would soothe the nerves. Of course, with that attitude, s/he would probably wind up smashing someone's windshield...

And I'm certainly not alone in my feelings after that mob of hoodlums threw down the gauntlet on Friday. You don't want attitude then don't give it.

I like to adopt a zen attitude when riding or driving these days. Calm and aware...letting others' angsts or errors wash over me. I haven't had to replace a windshield or get stitches in my knuckles for years now.

Anybody who rides a Bike on Graham Hill rd, is just asking for trouble, in the form of a cracked skull or worse.
It doesn,t much matter who,s in the right. The Biker will come out the worse.

As a retired commercial driver I was very particular who I drove for for a living. Just as I would be if I decided to ride a bike. So I say no thanks to biking this week and/or any other week/s because I am very particular who I drive/ride with.

Who said anything about riding on Graham Hill?(Incidentally, that is one route I'll avoid on a bike.... I'll ride Mission street many times before Graham Hill). There are other routes, perhaps 10 or so, between SC/SV and the SLV that do not require Graham Hill. Some are trails, some roads.

Anyway, you are assuming an awful lot. Drivers surge past cyclist in thier haste just to turn in front of them, slam on thier breaks, and throw on thier signals all the time. If they waited 5-10 sec in most cases there would not be a dangerous situation, but the drivers are rude and in a hurry! End of story!

Youth is wonderful. Too late for me to start riding a bike. I'm stuck paying for expensive gas and insurance. I hope we don't get too carried away with love of bikes.
BTW: 20 years ago everyone in China went by bike. They had no option. Now they are switching to cars and are consuming tankers of oil. If bikes were the ultimate solution to transportation why are they switching?

howmuch wrote: If bikes were the ultimate solution to transportation why are they switching? Because gas is cheap relative to its consequences. If the price of gas truly included all the environmental costs, I bet bikes would look much better especially for short trips. There's also a status issue. Rolling in a black Lincoln with leather seats and tinted windows has a different vibe than rolling on a bike. And of course, cars are a bit more comfortable when it's raining and muddy out. But on a fine spring day, pedaling to the corner store is invigorating and oh so sweet...

I am certainly enjoying this current (but fluctuating) oil per barrel at $125.78 immensely! I can continue cycling while commuters cry about rising gas prices; and watching younger people cry about food prices. Does not take a rocket scientist to realize gas, diesel, food, deliveries, service are all trickling up; some are prepared to go-with-the-flow, while others argue amongst themselves. Comical tragedy in the making!
