The Stars and Bars (i.e., the "Confederate Battle Flags) DOES NOT "fly over our nation" - though it may fly over some state capitals.

Our nation's flag is known as "Old Glory" and it has fifty stars representing the fifty states.

And it's true that every sort of people have been enslaved. The name slave itself is a reference to the Slavic people who the Roman's liked to enslave.

But overall, Melinda, I'm a little unclear about what you're trying to say here.

Well Africans owned slaves into the 1900's and more than 1000 years ago owned slaves from countries in what is now Europe and Asia, so maybe African-Americans owe people of European descent a little bit of those reparations.
How any intelligent person can believe that anyone owes anybody anything for atrocities commited by their ancestors is crazy.
I understand that some of the slaves who were freed after the Emacipation Proclamation were paid with land and farm animals (40 acres and a mule sound familar). Those people were entitled and I understand that, however unless one person can give me a legit reason why people think they are still owed, I will never believe it should happen. And don't try that angle that blacks start out with a disadvantage because, hey, it all boils down to choices and morals. White, Black, Red, Yellow, or purple with polka dots, these two men killed an innocent girl who's only offense was being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The 40 acres and a mule that was under gerneral shermans order was dismissed. What he had planned was over written by johnson when lincoln was assasinated,that land was given back to the ex-confederates. Black people either had a choice to go back to africa or live on the coast of south carolina and within it's islands. What you are talking about was a setup, once the freed blacks got that land they were charged high taxes that they knew they wouldnt afford and it was taken back. So technically black people did'nt get any type of reparation. ONLY the white farm owners got compensated for the damage caused by the war.

So if that's accurate about the trip home or land in SC (I believe it probably is) then can anyone complain there family was here against their will after the war. A chance to go to the home land would have made sense instead of remaining in a country they don't feel welcome today.
I understand and agree that the ownership of slaves was wrong, albiet a neccessity in those times and in the growth of every civilazation throughout time. But as I have researched that the majority of African slaves were sold to traders bound from Africa to the US, by other Africans, shouldn't reparations be paid from the African people?

i can't imagine something I could care less about... and what does this have to with a caveman, thug-monkey savagely murdering an innocent girl because he was raised to think he had the right to take anything he wanted...and that the only thing that really matters in life is driving an escalade and wearing diamond earings???

I didn't say that it was the same thing, I just imagine that if we blame the people on the purchasing end of the slave trade then we have to blame the person who made the sale in the first place. Equal blame for the total atrocity.

Her murderers owe her her life back, and they owe her family their daughter. The internet gives us all enough anonymity to speak in ways we never would in public, to each others faces. In other words, it gives cowards a kind of voice, even cowards working as journalists. The fact that someone found it appropriate to make a paycheck off an editorial like this one isn't surprising these days, nor are the kinds of conversations people are willing to have over it. You think African-Americans are all decedent from slaves? That's convenient for you if you need that myth to excuse the frustrations you face. Racism is an evil we have to live with, so is murder, but somehow, the ignorance that permits people to speak the way that they do, without any sense of honor or morality, to use anything, even the brutal murder of a young woman as a platform for their own idiotic perspectives, is harder to accept. We all owe someone for who we are, and the first person on the list is ourselves. If we choose to be cowards about how we see ourselves, and live within elaborate frameworks of excuses for our shortcomings and frustrations, we only have ourselves to pay.

I hope to see an African-American become president soon, and I'll enjoy the satisfaction of every last one of you ignorant fools shaking your fists at him for refusing to pay your lazy asses a single dime. I'm proud of my heritage for what my ancestors achieved despite their origins of bondage and poverty, and I would never tarnish their name by bringing up "reparations" -- as if money could ever pay for their losses -- especially not by using a slain woman's name in vain.

You should be ashamed if you think that her ancestors have any bearing on the nature of her death, and you should be considered an accomplice if you think that her ancestors lives in any way justify the brutality of her death.
