Letter to Candidate Melissa Link District 3 Athens

Hello Candidate Melissa Link: A few months ago I sent the enclosed message to both candidates for Mayor. Neither replied.
I now send it to you. Is not the main goal of any elected official in Athens to use the full military force and power of government to force the haves to pay the costs of the have nots while at the same time using that same force and power of government to fight (via expensive lawyers) any efforts of the haves to stop this tyranny of them by government?
I have been a citizen here now for almost 50 years and the above statement describes this constant principle above in the title of my message: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs." So far as I know the author of this well worn philosophy was Karl Marx.
Ms Link, our family pays about $12,000 per year in forced property tax to Athens Clarke County. About half that amount goes to pay for education costs of children we did not foster. Our only son graduated from high school here about 35 years ago, but we are forced to pay and pay and pay for the cost of education of others, which takes needed money from us and our only son and our grandchildren and destroys what little security we have for the forced costs of others who often pay little or nothing for the costs of education of the children they bring into this crowded world. Copy to Mr. Pete McCommons. By the way, would you and Pete be in favor of bus loads of the illegal children crossing our borders being dropped off in Athens for the haves to pay their costs to survive?
"Dear Mr. Tim Denson and Ms. Nancy Denson: March 12, 2014
How about after over 20 years of lies, providing everyone in the Unified Government of Athens Clarke County with equal services, like sewer service and bus service, for example as promised in the original Charter, while the government unfairly and illegally expands sewer and bus service downtown for the selfish benefit of those selfish citizens? How about shutting down the bus service if it is not provided fairly to all in the county? This unsafe,, blocking traffic lanes, polluting the air with diesel exhaust, wasting expensive and precious fuel, mostly empty bus service, which is subsidized by millions of tax dollars a year is very wasteful and inefficient. Fewer, smaller vehicles would do a much better job.
There are many unsolved serious crimes in Athens Clarke County, like the unsolved Jennifer Stone Murder of 1992 or the Tara Baker murder of 2001 and a host of others. It is very unlikely these are truly still active investigations, and even if they are, the details should now be opened to the light of truth and the light of day. The earlier case where the Banner Herald sued to have the Jennifer Stone files opened was won at the level of the Court of Appeals while secrecy was sustained at the Georgia Supreme Court.
Citizens were totally kept in the dark over the reasons the government of Athens appealed to the Supreme Court to keep the case files hidden from public view. All this case did was say Athens can keep them secret, but they are not forced to do so. How about some leadership in the direction of open government for a change and open up these files to the light of day and light of truth? It is very unlikely anyone will ever be brought to justice in the Jennifer Stone Case. A recent article claimed that the local Judges son was never DNA tested and then claimed that the police knew he was innocent anyway. This is totally outrageous. They should have given him a DNA test 20 years ago. Obviously this government is protecting him. Secrecy is the enemy of the truth. Suppose Jennifer Stone was the daughter of either of you?

Continued from above:
The unsolved case of Tara Baker should also be opened up to the light of day and the light of truth. Obviously Athens Clarke County has something to hide. This has nothing to do with being able to prosecute a suspect since none have been arrested and charged anyway. If these cases were opened to the public, possibly members of the public could help solve them too. It is shameful that police secrecy hold such a prominent position in Athens Clarke County. Obviously they are hiding something or possibly even the details have been destroyed. How would citizens know? It is all secret.
Please do not respond to those selfish citizens lobbying for changes in Prince Ave., while many other streets in Athens are also pedestrian unfriendly, like Hawthorne Ave., and most of Broad St. and most of the highways exiting Athens like North ave. and Danielsville Rd., and Commerce Rd., and Jefferson Rd, etc. They also do not have sidewalks. A pedestrian was killed walking along Commerce Rd. who would be alive today if there had been sidewalks there.
Moreover, a connecting road is desperately needed between Commerce Rd. and Danielsville Rd. so the Fire Truck from the expensive Fire Station on Danielsville Rd. doesnt have to travel all the way in to the ByPass and back out Commerce Rd., wasting valuable response time to arrive at a fire. A few years ago former Mayor Heidi Davison removed this proposed road from the MACORTS plan due to selfish loud mouths who seek to dictate foolish inefficient plans for outlying areas of the county. In fact, a connecting road all the way to the Athens Highway across the Northern part of the county was proposed but foolishly removed from the plan.
When is this government going to enforce the law on the illegal squatters in and around Athens and in Tent City illegally dumping garbage and urinating and defecating on the ground, which in turn washes directly into the rivers and streams of Athens, a federal criminal offense? The time is long overdue for this illegal political correctness to end. Every officer of Athens takes an oath to enforce all laws. Stop violating this oath. What if a homeowner allowed these people to live in a tent in their back yard? How long would it be until the government sent the police out to jail the homeowner?
And how about forcing these homeless and other drags on society to pay some taxes since they use a large part of the government provided services here? They have been allowed to walk in busy streets to cars to beg for money from drivers. Our family has been forced to involuntarily pay almost one quarter of a million dollars in property tax to Athens Clarke County over the past 20 years and about half of it goes to pay for public education of children of others we did not foster. How about some fairness for a change? Our only son graduated from Cedar Shoals High School over 30 years ago, but we are forced to pay and pay and pay while many of those who have all these kids pay nothing or nearly nothing at all. This is also illegal because it violates the equal protection clause of the Constitution. In Georgia there is no office to force local government to comply with laws.
These are just a few of the many issues here in Athens which are not being talked about or addressed in this charade of a sham election.
