Tornado Safety

Seems there was a Planning Commission/Public Hearing meetings back in September 2010 where a Tornado Shelter was brought up for Mobile Home Parks. Mary Holden showed a sample ordinance for mobile home parks to put in tornado shelters. It was quickly put in question of legal grounds by Jeff Fitter and was only concerned about the liability the city would take on. Too Del Williams thought that since we did not live in "Tornado Alley" there seems to be no need for one.(Don't worry about them, they choose to live there)( Good safety for Arnold residents moron) The commission thought there would be alot of resistance from the residents of mobile home parks cause the added cost may go to their rent.(Did they ever stop to ASK the residents?) Just another tidbit of how our fare City of Arnold view the safety of their residents.

Well, actually there are grants available for storm shelters. Also, at least two of the mobile home parks in Arnold have storm shelters, one being the Coach and the other being Ozark off of Starling Airport. It is not only the mobile home parks that are in need of storm shelters. We have many homes in the City of Arnold that have no basements. They are on slabs or over crawl spaces.
Newer commercial buildings have "safe" rooms and places like malls have a storm protocol they follow. I'm wondering if the general citizenry is aware of any storm shelters here in Arnold? What kind of plan do we have in place? Where should people go in case of a tornado? People survived by the airport recently because they had enough warning and took the proper actions to keep themselves safe. Many died and were injured in other places that weren't as prepared.
Devastating tornadoes can happen anywhere. Other cities have storm shelters strategically placed that will hold up to 750 persons. The first step is to determine the extent of the need. Before this goes any further, I don't think we need to hire a pricey "consulting firm" to figure this out for us.

I dont know why its not a law.One day i stop by the fire house and asked thim ware to go.The man i talked to acted like it was funney and told me to go to seven eleven. I got told that by a fire man. So i bet he would not think its so funney if he had to clean up a park from a tronado. I have three kids and i am new to jefferson county and dont know my way hear. i have no friend or family out this way.By the time i got to thim it would be to late for me and my kids. What about family like mine. We dont choose to live hear.Thare is just not the money to have a house. When you have three kid no husben work and thare is no help but food staps and it takes all you have to pay the bills you cant get a home that maybe as much as $200.000. Well but as it seems thay could care less for people in mobile home. We dont pay as much taxes as the peopel with the big homes. We pay but not as much so who cares.

First of all let me say I'm sorry for how this will come across! I'm tired of facts being twisted to suit ones agenda!

So that you may understand my position.....

The storm shelter that I voiced my concern about was a City wide shelter, not one specific to any one subdivision or trailer park. If a subdivision wants to provide a shelter or a trailer park wants to provide a shelter they are wlecome to (given they follow the correct steps), I'm not in favor of using City funds or resources to accomplish this however. This is more in line to Del and my comments..

It was brought up that the City should provide storm shelters in locations around the City, not inculding any exisiting buildings but instead large shelters place throught the City. My legal question was for those residents who choose to flee their homes (not recommended) and drive, walk, ride a bike or run to these shelters and don't make it. I'm no laywer so I can't talk to the legal concerns and as such I've recommeneded that we ask for legal advise on this matter. Please read the minutes (they are public record) and you will see that I have done just this each time it has come up.

Please take the time to report all the facts and not just twist the ones you see fit to match your agenda. I agree that there has been in the past and will be in the future those who may not have the best interest of Arnold on the front burner however those of us who give our time to the City for the betterment of our City deserve more respect. If you feel that strongly then I suggest you volunteer like we do on this or other boards and work towards making a difference. At the very least you can come to our meetings, we meet ever 2nd and last Tuesday of the month, and share your concerens. If you wish to stay on this board and complain then you have done nothing more than become part of the issue, it would be much more productive for you to become part of the solution.

Take a page from Doris, she worked to become part of the solution!!

For him 2 say Don't worry about them they choose to live there! In my own opinion I think that is so dang rude!#1 there are ppl that living in a trailer is all they can afford! I grew up in a trailer and dang proud of it! It would be excellent if EVERY park had a storm shelter.

I think every mobile home community should have a storm shelter. And I think the owner of the community should pay for it and just raise the rent or maintenance fees a few bucks to pay for it.. I live in a home.. but if I lived there I would gladly pay 10 extra a month to know my family and I have a safe place to go in case of a tornado
