Putnam County voters need to know that he couldn't pass the Putnam County Deputy Sheriff's Sargeant test, which he took more than once, and retired as a Corporal. I don't believe he has a college degree, which should be mandatory, since the Sheriff is responsible for overseeing our tax money.

First of all, correct spelling is Sergeant. I have worked with Deweese and the promotion exam is not a pass/fail exam. He does have a degree but it is not a perquisite for Sheriff. He is still the President of the Putnam County Deputy Sheriffs Association and has been for over 10 years. Steve has developed protocols for not only the deputies but city officers within our county. He has 0 written reprimands within his years of service at the Sheriff’s office. He also has served our country, in which YOU should be proud of and has been awarded 2 Bronze Stars while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Deweese is the man for the job.

Well stated! Great man! Steve DeWeese should not have to defend his character, his reputation speaks for itself. Definitely the man for the job.

Why do people have to do this? Do you not know how stupid it makes you look?

You can "glorify" him all you want, but the fact is, he didn't get promoted to sergeant and none of you have denied that fact. Too bad that Mark Smith isn't eligible to run again because he has ALL the qualifications that make a great sheriff, such as education (4 yr college degree) law enforcement experience (25+ yrs) and a rank above corporal (captain). Enough said.

Nobody seems to care what rank he carried as a sheriff deputy except you. Along with his 20 + years of experience in law enforcement, he also holds the highest enlisted military rank, which more than qualifies him for sheriff in Putnam county.

Once again, the fact that he was not promoted to sergeant after 20+ years law enforcement, was not denied. Must be true. I have the utmost respect for all military personnel, but that does not qualify someone to be sheriff of any county!

Apparently you don't know much about the military rank, his distinguished military rank and military occupational specialty places him in a supervisory position as a commander and leader under the United States Federal Government. This alone more than qualifies him for a county government position. You have contradicted yourself once with your assumption that he did not have a college degree and then you look so foolish to be stuck on this sergeant rank and just keep ranting about it...again you are the only one who cares, it IS so minute in comparison to his distinguished career, work experience, & accomplishments.

Let's just hope he puts dogs back on the streets to control drugs for our kids and families.

To be sheriff all you need is to be elected just like all the years past

The current sheriff isn't very smart he purchased 2-3 K9's and then had to give them away because they could not afford them. That's a real smart man. Spend 20,000 plus dollars to give it away. Our money he gave away.

The Charleston Daily Mail, a Republican newspaper, endorsed Mr. Deweese's opponent, a Democrat. It appears the newspaper believes his opponent is more qualified to deal with the drug problem in Putnam County. As a Republican, I value the endorsements of the Charleston Daily Mail and will vote for any candidate they endorse.

Again, Putnam County voters can't lose for winning. They have two highly qualified candidates for sheriff, and no matter who wins on Nov. 6, the public wins bigger....I believe this was the opening statement to their endorsement article. Exercise your right to vote how you see it necessary, however, broad prospective and his "possible ability" to bring additional resources to bear on the drug problem isn't quite convincing enough for me to cast a vote for "possibly" the wrong candidate simply because of a news source's endorsement.

Great comment FACT and here is the true facts that voters need to know since the Charleston Daily Mail does not print both candidates’ current endorsements. Here we go again. Since YOU brought it up maybe you should look at the 17 endorsements that Deweese currently has to Bud Lett’s one (1): FOP Capital City Lodge #74, WV Deputy Sheriff’s Association, WV Sheriff’s Association (PAC), FOP Post #88, Putnam Farm Bureau,(Nice ONE, all the farmers in Putnam County are endorsing his campaign), Sheet Metal Local Union #33, Teamsters Local Union 505 & 175, Major General (Ret) Allen E. Tackett, Carpenters Local 1207, 302, 1159, 1911, Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 625, AFL-CIO, Charleston Daily Mail (Primary) and Boilermakers Local 667. Based on the above endorsements and the Charleston Daily Mail giving a dual endorsement yesterday to both candidates: Putnam County voters can't lose for winning. They have two highly qualified candidates for sheriff, and no matter who wins on Nov. 6, the public wins bigger. So I still feel DEWEESE is the man for the job!!!!

I was scrolling through the local topix discussions and came upon this post. I read the Charleston Daily Mail endorsements for Putnam County, and it appeared the newspaper did endorse "Democrat candidate Bud Lett". The Charleston Daily Mail rarely endorses a democrat candidate. Good luck to both candidates.

Ive worked with Steve Deweese in both the miltary and with the Putnam County Sheriffs department. He has Retired General Alan Tacket endorsing him who is the former chair of the Demorcatic party in WV. Who cares what the newspapers say. I stake my reputaion on Steve Deweese for Sheriff. He would have been my choice as Cheif Deputy had I won the Sheriffs race in 2000. Hes the man for the job. Good luck Steve

The voters made the right decision when they chose Steve Deweese. He will improve the department greatly, bring back the K9 units and run the drug dealers out of Putnam County.
