When I first moved to Texas I wound up in Grand Prairie living in motels by the week next door to hookers and drug dealers. My car was 13 years old, wheezing every time I started it and ready to die. I had lost what little I had in a relationship gone bad. I was literally alone here with a child. I was lucky enough to have a little over $500, but I knew it wouldn't last very long.

My first job didn't pay much, so I sold plasma twice a week for extra cash, and prayed a lot. Moved into a cheap apartment on East Park Row. Kept working hard, didn't party or waste money on cable TV, eating out, cell phones, etc. Never got government assistance except for a free box of food from the police dept that year at Christmas because I didn't make it to the plasma center on time. I learned to love Ramen noodles.

Sometimes the only person who can bail you out of trouble is yourself. Hard work. Forget any sense of entitlement you think you're supposed to have and just go out and get a job or education. It may take a few years and you won't be able to afford to do a lot of things, but you'll be making a wise investment in yourself and your child's future. Education--it's available and usually dirt cheap for single women with children.

I have lived here for seven years. I pay more in taxes now than I used to earn in a year. I bought my first brand new car within a year of moving here. I look back now and remember those days of doing without and I don't feel sorry for myself. I am just amazed that by working hard, educating myself and keeping expenses low, I was able to turn my life around. Me. A single mother. Still boggles my mind.

Ever notice the common thread in most of these posts is kids with children? It's a shame that a little time wasn't given to sex education early on instead of the parents either not caring or fearing that sex education leads to sexual activity.

Yes, it is sad. I think a lot of young women have no idea what it takes to raise a child alone. I've had friends with teenage girls who have boasted about wanting to be a mother and how much better of a job they could do than their own mother. Where did these teenage girls wind up? Back at home with mom because they couldn't afford the lifestyle they HATED so much at home. They need to teach more about the realities of life in school, i.e., cost of living, paying bills, raising a child, child support, etc. That's what I think.

I have a relative who is homeless, but getting a total hip replacement in San Marcos, Texas. Is there any temporary housing for someone recovering from surgery for 2-3 weeks. This poor man has no money, but hoping the hip surgery will get him back into his line of business.....construction.

Try and get assistance on buying a home you don't want to live in those apartments with children. they are full of child molesters. Go to the Arlington police website and look for yourself if you don't believe me. Arlington get's kick backs for letting them move here to live. You can look that up to and see it's true.

Daily Horoscope for December 29

Virgo

If something is weighing on your mind it will start to affect your health, Virgo. It might make you feel tired or depressed, or it could dominate your thoughts. You know what you should do about it, of course, but it seems like too much effort or you want to pretend that it doesn't exist. Unfortunately, this escapist attitude won't make the problem go away and might even make it more tricky by the time you finally decide to tackle it.
