If you have been here your whole life, what are you comparing it too?

7 more years and I get to retire at age 55 with a full pension and health insurance. I'll be glad to leave and leave behind all the stupidity of the area and its teens who seem to think they run the city. I'm going to live somewhere teenagers can't afford to live... teens with grandparents who are smart enough to not let them move in with them.
Let me tell you this area is just too culturally diverse and thats why there is so much trouble ( besides there being too many teenagers, most of which are lazy and good for nothing ).
High schools have to have a full time police officer or two for the drama.

You would be really surprised at all the nice places to live, this isn't one of them....
I'm only here for work and as soon as I can retire.... I'm out of here and this crazy area filled with shopping and resturants for people who have no imagination or work ethic which may explain why all the good paying jobs with any responsibility where things have to be done right....
have to go out of state and bring people here to do the job. No one born and raised here can seem to qualify to be hired and do a good job.

If mall walking and goofing off, many in this area would have a lifetime job.

Exactly, if the home boys come by my house wearing their colors and flashing their cowardly gang signs, BANG, GOODBYE.

I live in a home in N. Arlington not far from Butler Elementary. I have substituted in many of the elementary schools and noted that the behavior issues are in the campuses that have apartments in their zone. I will never understand why Arlington wanted all these apartments.
I have 2 babies and am looking foward to them going to school one day. I feel that Butler will be a safe and healthy learning environment, but I fear their middle school experience at Shackelford and Lamar H.S. looks better, but not much.
I agree that we need to take back our city. Let's downsize the apartment population. Bulldoze the buildings and construct nice middle-class houses and neighborhood shopping areas. I think that would greatly help. Won't happen though.
I firmly agree.

When I go to my daughter's school (Martin), she gets so embarrassed when I tell the the young men that their underwear are showing ... and the boys just glare at me ... I swear, they are showing five or six inches of underwear and constantly tugging at the pants to keep them from falling all the way down to the ground. That can not possibly be comfortable to constantly have to be tugging at the pants. Also, these are kids who CAN afford (their parents can afford) pants that fit. It appears they are dressing this way on purpose. I can't imagine why their parents let them go to school with their underwear showing? I don't have any boys, so I guess I will never understand.
Because they are a bunch of d u m b a s s e s
that's why.

I have seen how kids go to school with the droopy drawers and this would not happen if the parents went shopping with them and made sure they buy pants that fit.

You would think that ( sickening) trend would be over by now and they would find some new and shocking way of wearing clothing... like inside out or backwords... or even putting on their underwear over their pants;)
The kids nowadays sure seem to lack imagiantion if all they can do is wear the same old style.... its been like 10 years since droppy drawers were the gangs choice of style.

Some school districts are going to school uniforms. I know students don't like this but it solves the problems of droopy drawers etc.

A couple summers ago, had a teenage boy come to my door and ask me for a drink. He looked about 14 or 15........ a hispanic kid. It was hot and I was thinking he moight have some heat related problems.....
so I told him to wait on the porch and got him a dixie cup of water.

I thought he meant water, so I got him a glass.
right?
When I gave it to him- He said he didn't mean water, asked me if I had any Jack Daniels.

I was like WOW, you must be kidding ?

That was when I stopped answering the door, because I apprently don't know these kids lingo or motis operatis.
When I was a kid we would sneak drinks, beer mostly. Would never think of going to someones door and ask for a drink of alcohol.

cocky kids, next time I just call police to report suspicious person.

People are saying there are gangs in Bowie High. I live so close to Bowie, I can see it from my windows.
I do not see gangs in this area prowling at night. I guess in areas with no apartments, near a school, its not going to attract kids after school hours to come to the school to start trouble.
What I do see is lots of police at the school during school hours. I think there maybe some police officers stationed at the school as there are so many fights IN THE SCHOOL.

I reallly have no problems with gangs. Had 2 bad kids live near me, but it was not gang related, it was a matter of dysfunctional parenting.
After thre kids went to prison, the parents marriages dissolved and the people moved away......
there has been no mischief.

The thing that makes Arlington and some parts of Grand Prairie bad is that its inbetween two major cities.

When ever the riff-raff off Dallas or Fort Worth move on up to Arlington, they see it as easier to assert their own dominance in said areas. Thats when the suburban kids follow suit.

One gang breeds more gangs and now we have Bloods, Crips, MS13, The Vietnamese gangs infamous for their usage of machetes, the 18th street, latin Kings and I Guarantee there will be more

Things have gotten worse over the years and lately you'll even see a gang of crips hanging out in front of a relatively nice house.

It's not a racial thing, I've seen every type of person thats been involved in gangs, hell I even saw a punjabi crip... point is, there is no blaming anyone but ourselves and the parents of these kids who arent taking the time out to be with them or to guide them into the right path, instead of letting their children slide with certain things.

I also sympathize for parents of gangbangers because alot of times, it really isnt their fault... What are you going to do if youre a single mother of three who worked 2 jobs just to support a family.. you CANT ALWAYS be there to parent if youre doing so much just to provide the essentials.

If you put it like this who can you blame? Theres noone to blame...

I've been in the area 30 plus years and I'll tell you it was nice....... UNTIL about 1995 when I noticed lots of minorities move into the area, mostly into the newer construction homes being built at that time.
South Arlington is mostly a BLACK area. My husband and I are biracial so we liked the fact it was turning black BUT>>>>>> >>
it also brought increased crime in all ways, gangs are the least of it.
In the last 10 years this area of south arlington has really changed into a growing area, but it has not grown in a way that people would like an area to grow.
The changes made it easy for my spouse and I to make the commitment to leave the area when we retire in a few years ( we are retiring early at age 55) and move somewhere not only with less people, but with less to no growth, a resort ski and vacation area in the northeast so we can enjoy going outside day or night and have low crime in the community.
For the people who choose to stay in the DFW area... that is also your choice.
If I were you I'd try to make it a better place to live if your stuck here for some reason.. and
if you have kids take the time to raise them and be sure they are cared for to not add to the problems of the area with it's young people, who seem to have loads of self esteem with nothing to back it up, aka troublemakers.

There are troublemakers EVERYWHERE. Maybe not as many in a small community, true, and maybe not as many as in the Dallas-Ft.Worth area. However, there is always something you will not like about an area you live in. Good luck in wherever you move.

Perhaps it is lack of a decent police department? I have been broken into 3 times by the same neighborhood kid. Once his mother told me what he had done, the other two times other neighbors let me know. The last two times I contacted the arlington police, after filing a report the went to the kid's door was told he was not home and left. End of story!
Same kid smashed my and my son's car windows twice. Police were notified, took report over phone. End of story!
The Arlington police department is worthless in my opinion.
