For the past 10 days or so, Michelle Hyasat has been keeping up an early morning vigil, slowly cruising the 1800 block of South Arlington Street before sunrise, keeping an eye out for trouble.

The requirement that scrap yards have to collect names, addresses and phone numbers, i.e. show an ID, for certain types of scrap brought in, would slow this type of crime down. No ID, no scrap money.

I'm sure they will address common sense directly given the scope of the problem. In a pigs eye!

It's out duty to continually point these things out to our legislators. They aren't smart enough to think of these things on their own. They are politicians after all.

Also, they could save the PD a step and just take a mug shot there on the premises along with the ID.

If scrap dealers get loys of convertors delivered to their door, they have to know where they came from. The scrap dealer who pays for this metal is as guilty as the stealers. Put a few of their a$$es in jail and watch the convertor stealing go away.

This doesn't just effect car dealers - these thieves are going through parking lots of busineses and stealing the converters from employee cars while people are at work.

Its disgusting.

it is nice to alert everyone, especially theives, the value of the converters. why not put a picture in to show everyone what to steal? you could also sell the tools to steal the converters with. too much detail is stupid, good job

You are an idiot. Criminalizing the scrap dealers will not stop anything. You need to have a way to track the real thief, by putting restrictions on a transaction that will allow them to be tracked while still allowing the dealer to run their business.

It always amazes me why scrap dealers don't write down names, adresses, phone numbers, and license plat numbers when they do these deals. Couyld it be they want to plead ignorance since they know the metals are stolen?

stealing from others is the same as robbing. A thief is a thief, and no, it has not color;it ony sees green.

Instead of criminalizing the dealers, perhaps an award system for reporting and turning in people with suspect scrap. A pile of chopped off converters should raise anybody's suspicions.

I agree most likely many of the scrap dealers are honorable. So of course the actions of the few who aren't has an impact on everyone. Just like the pawn shops I think the scrap yards should have to do the same, id and fingerprint, and yea go ahead and grb a photo too! The scrap places that don't want to do this should loose their license.

Another great idea! Maybe a combination of both would shut down the crooks!

This just goes to show that the so called Akron police dept has better things to do than patrol car lots in the south akron area looking out for suspicious vehicles. kudos to the Akron police department...

Hire a security guard for $8 dollars an hour then fire the jerk after the thefts subside.

This is a crying shame. Someone stole mine last month from the parking lot of Akron Classic Auto Body on E. Cuyahoga Falls Avenue. These thieves are getting so bold it's scary.

The scrap yards do take down names and addresses. Some even copy the driver's license of customers. The reason the police can't stop it is because there is no way to prove ownership of scrap. Scrap does not contain serial numbers. The only way to stop it is to punish the crooks when they do get caught. In reality, the only thing that happens to somoene who gets caught and convicted is house arrest. No jails equals no punishment equals crime. The only way to get more jail space is for Don's friends to start building them. Oh wait, that's what the Oriana House facilities are.

Speaking of ignorance, you couldn't be MORE ignorant, dumbass. Actually there are MANY respectable scrap dealers who do exactly that. Unfortunately, it's the very few shady ones they go to.
As usual, you're commenting because you're an idiot with no life and love showing everyone how stupid you are. Where are the carts, Wal-Mart Greeter? Get off the net in the electronics department and back to work, troll.
You must be one of those shadey ones. Hit your sore point. No stolen goods for you.
