Will was actually my friend and it was very sad to hear what happend to him. We all graduated thursday night and it's sad to think that William's face won't be at our high school next year. We all miss him dearly and wish the best for his family.

Yes, this happens if you do not know how to swim... MORE IMPORTANTLY, THEY WERE TREPASSING... They climbed a fence to gain access to the pool.. big mistake. Use a hose to cool off and the friends should go in twos next time they feel like dipping in a pool.

Would that William had heeded all that he was told about the possible consequences of jumping a fence in the pursuit of a good time.
Losing a young person in such a senseless way is a hard thing to deal with because of the potential lost.
My sympathy to his family.
PS: Something isn't right here. 45 seconds? We'll hear more about this.

While this is sad you all have to remember that he climbed a fence.
There are several inconsistancies to this story though, why would they have to climb a fence if the pool was suppose to be open until 9:00pm?
Did he really drown in 45 seconds or was it longer and his friends are afaid to say how long they left him in the pool?
I just hope the family doesn't feel the need to sue anyone because their son felt the need to trespass. It was his mistake so noone but he is responsible.

Well said. Also, it's not like he was 30 and drunk and jumping the fence. He was a child; a young teenager doing something many teens have done before him and many will do again. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

drowned eh

Shame on you, headline writer, for assuming this was a drowning. If you have a source that says it was a drowning, call rewrite and get it in the story. The facts are consistent with many possible explanations. Back to J-school!

In my Arlington Heights apartment complex the pool can only be accessed with a pass belonging to a resident. Although they had a friend living there I can only assume they didn't have such a pass which was why they jumped the fence. And I certainly agree about the litigation aspect, not just from the side of a rent-paying resident of such a complex who doesn't want to see the pool being closed for fear of being sued, but because so many of my fellow suburban parents still need to learn that they are the ones responsible for their kids' actions until they officially come of age.

I just read all of your comments and it's funny how all you heartless people are blaming him for jumping a fence when a young inocent young man just lost his life. If you're going to right a comment please have it be nice and not rude unlike you people who have no heart. When none of you people know how we feel... losing a close friend. All William wanted to do was swim. When Tanglewood did not have any lifeguards on duty.

Nice comments? Who determines what are nice or acceptable comments? Fact is, he broke the law to get to that pool and there is no way around that particular fact. He gets no sympathy here, as he was old enough to know right from wrong. I get so sick of those sanctimonious people who feel that life should be just one whole series of Hallmark Moments. Well, it isn't. He made a choice, a dumb, stupid choice, but a choice nonetheless. Now he's paying the piper.

Tanglewood Apartments? THat is the ghetto of Arlington Heights. WHat do you expect?

Do you people even know what ghetto is? Not all people have the money to live in these great houses or what not don't judge Tangelwood just because of the people who live there. He did not hop the fence to break the law when the the person who wrote this that's probably what he meant. By the way roadgeek shut your mouth you weren't friends with him so you have no right to judge. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY... HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF ONE OF YOUR CLOSE FRIENDS DIED.... whether it was for a stupid mistake or not.. just think.. he's only 14 years old and just graduated junior high. He had a whole life ahead of him. I knew Will so much and he had big goals in life. He had a good heart and he was a very great person. Too bad you people didn't get the memo about being nice to other people

A young man dies needlessly and tragically and people like you can only grouse and gripe about lawbreaking and rail against lawsuits that have not even happened yet. We don't know the victim but we know everything we need to know about you, commenters. You cannot be happy, loving people. You cannot have even a shred of empathy. Your hearts, as Dr. Seuss said, are several sizes too small. WakeUpAmerica wrote: <quoted text>Well stated. This child saw that the pool was locked, and what did he do, he took the risk and climbed over the fence. He didnt ask someone in the complex if it was alright to go in, instead he took a chance with his life and the pool won. Sorry fact is he should have stayed out of an lock area, maybe thats why it had a LOCK on it!!!!

All William wanted to do was swim, is that such a crime? I understand what you are saying but if William wanted to swim in an locked area, do you think he should have asked an adult first? Not saying that this wasnt a tradegy, just the mere fact that he should have not gone into an unsupervised area. PERIOD.
