Dear struggling mom... I feel your pain, my mother who works in the post office raised three children by herself. While doing so she worked 3 yes I said 3 jobs to pay rent, utilities, food,(car payment was a luxury those days)babysitters, insurance for car - again health insurance was a luxury. She did all of this while not having government assistance and a looser exhusband who would not stand up and pay a required $35 a week child support. I do understand you feelings here but the real discussion on this forum is about Dansville's history and if you live or have lived in Dansville as we have everyone knows about the Castle. It is amazing that this old structure is getting new life and that Dansville's economy is getting new life. Keep your head up and do not take this as people coming down on you, I just want you to know that there are others out there who have gone through and lived through what you are now living.

It just boggles my mind that the government can come up with all of these grants for millions of dollars and yet the funding for programs like WIC is so short that they can't "help" a single mother making $14.00/hour because they see that as a decent income. You do the math - house payment, car, insurance, utilities, food, formula, diapers.$14.00/hour doesn't put a dent in it. I'm very fortunate to have a strong support system (an awesome family) because after all of that, my kids would walk around in rags because I certainly couldn't afford to buy them the clothes that they have!
So I guess my point is that the government seems, in my eyes anyway, to have it's priorities out of order. While I agree that it's GREAT to see this building being resurrected...it's not going to help people like myself and my children to live comfortably. I just think it's a kick in the butt to hear "sorry, you aren't eligible for help" because I have a job and make more than minimum wage and have managed to purchase a home for myself and my children - then read years later that they've come up with millions for a project such as this. From what I hear, the programs for "help" have become even more stringent. I find it hard to believe that I'm the only one who feels this way.

For a second, I thought you may be my cousin that lives in Greenville SC but then I realized your name starts with a C, not a K. Her Grandparents as well as my Mother came from Dansville. It can sometimes be a small world!

I wanted to read more about how they were going to fix up that neat ole castle, not a political rant about who will pay for someones children. When we were kids growing up in the 50's and 60's us kids were happy building a bonfire out in the backyard and running with sissors while good ole mom and dad had their martini parties in the house with all my friends moms and dads! Now everything is "we have to do it for the children."

I dont think people have the right to mess with the castle. There are so many historical things inside beyond the spray paintings. I love the castle so much and i wanted to cry when i new everything would change. Its going to end up like everything else in Dansville, they'll start it but never finish. The place is so run down and destroyed from people that just dont give a crap about it. When you're standing on the roof and the wind blows you can just feel the whole thing shift with the wind. Good luck to the sucker who has to fix it up. I just wished they'd leave that place alone..

lol, little blunt, but yes, there are a ton of "struggling people" who do not try; and in our area the overwhelming majority sadly. I have used temporary assistance in the past and it did help, but I found a job in under 2 weeks each of the few times I was in that position. I daily see people running around wanting me to sign those job search books without them even asking for an application or to know about any job that is available. You need to want to help yourself in order to accept help that will better yourself. note: i have seen those same people go in and blow hundreds on a deposit for cell phone service and then seen them up in mt morris asking for full aid, there is something wrong with that: the reality is only about 5% of those people applying really want to be on their own the rest are there to recieve a government subsidised parent after being way old enough to be on their own.

Typical, blame the government. That is always the last resort. Be careful which government you blame; it is NYS that had the ability to allocate funds to projects.

Do you know your representative? Do you vote? Do you write them and tell them you can't provide for your children? Take part in the political process, don't sit back and complain.

If you blame your problems on the Government then you have found the ultimate dead end.

I work for the government and they are hard working people just like you and me. They are not corrupt and selfish. The people I work with are in charge of millions of projects and dollars they have a responsibility to every American citizen.

They didn't get you pregnant and they did not choose your lifestyle.

BTW the Hotel is one of my fondest memories of Dansville. I know it will look great.

To LOL, you wrote:"They didn't get you pregnant and they did not choose your lifestyle."--That is EXACTLY the point! Why should taxpayers have to carry people that make crappy life-altering decisions? I can remember going to college with girls that had gotten themselves knocked-up and they benefited from a government program that payed to educate them so they can support their child. All I could think was why do I have to work two jobs to pay for school, studying between waiting tables because I took care of myself and was responsible? If only I had screwed up, uncle Sam would take care of it for me?! I vote, and I am for less government and less laws. If some idiot wants to ride a motorcycle without a helmet, that's his perogative, he shouldn't get a ticket for it. As far as the seatbelt law, again, for an adult, it's their choice, but if they have children passangers, they should have to keep them restrained or get ticketed. Welfare is a joke and shouldn't exist. Most people don't work, because they get more money and aide not working. It'd be easier to just pop out another kid. Leave the asistance (temporary) to charities and not-for-profits. Before welfare, people did whatever they had to to get by. My great grandmother came from a family of eleven kids, she cleaned houses at 7yrs. old to help out. Back then, people took care of themselves. I know some people are delt a real crappy hand in life, I get it, but at some point, they need to be held accountable for themselves. It's scary how far this has gone. Don't even get me started on all the benefits illegal aliens get from this country (operative word being "illegal")And yes, I do vote to try and make sure it doesn't get any worse!

Duh, that is creating jobs, construction, office buildings= workers= work(gee I don't think they will leave them empty, thus jobs)
I am so pleased that Wayland and Dansville has started growing again, this mean opportunity.
Yeah, jobs are hard to find so be thankful they are trying to improve our small towns and keep it's rich history.

...thoe whole point of rennoavting it will be to create jobs...

it's a wonderful example of a public/private parternship accomplishing multiple goals: historic preservation, infusion of new jobs via turning a deteriorated hulk into working facilities, and probably an infusion of some tourist money too.

It's a grand old building...the kind they don't build anymore. In a world full of neon plastic storefronts and pre-fab mcmansions, it's great to see the better construction ethic of a different era.

I am so glad something is being done about it. I do remember the castle on the hill. I also had the pleasure of knowing one of the previous owners. They had planed to fix it up but it was to expensive. I got to walk thought it and all the houses on the property. They were amazing. There is a lot of history there.

Born and raised in Dansville and still here. Growing up in the fifties with a hard working dad and mom. Dad worked at Rapid Grow and Mom worked at F.A. Owens. I have to drive fourty miles one way to Rochester. My point is that this project will maintain some of Dansvilles history while opening up jobs here. Oh, how nice to be able to work where we live and to be a whole (complete)part of a community with respect for all.
