Authorities believe they have broken up a traveling group that stole checks from businesses around North Dakota, and possibly other states, and cashed them.

Checks are still widely used for PAYROLL and paying business bills, idiot. Fyi, the Dakotas were using computer communications LONG before the internet. My first computer sale in 1981 was to a farmer from North Dakota who used his Apple-2 to get commodity quotes and analyze them.
