So I assume you have dug the eight feet hole and tested the soil for chemical? Berlin and Ferro spand 40 acres... it can take several years for contaminates to seep into grounds water. So instead of basing your beliefs on your personal health, where you live and four wheeler rides maybe do your research on how many people in swartz creek have cancer, how many have died from it, and when cancer in our area became an epidemic! Im sure then you will see why there is a lot of concern!

Regarding Berlin and Farro, Swartz Creek, MI

For the individuals that do not review topographic maps, the KIMBALL AND SLOCUM DRAINS cross through the property of Berlin and Farro. These drainage ways are linked to a majority of the creeks and draining ditches.

Swartz Creek Drain Maps:
http://www.topozone.com/states/Michigan.asp...

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THIS POTENTIAL CONTAMINATION INCLUDE:

• A SHALLOW GROUND WATER TABLE THAT IS IN CONTACT WITH WASTES IN THE DRUM LANDFILL, PAINT SLUDGE TRENCH, AGRICULTURAL DRAINS, AND MISCELLANEOUS CONTAMINATED AREAS
• SAND LENSES IN THE SUBSURFACE PROFILE THAT CAUSE A RELATIVELY HIGH SOIL PERMEABILITY IN THE HORIZONTAL DIRECTION
• THE ABSENCE OF ANY LINER OR LEACHATE BARRIER ON THE BOTTOM OR SIDES OF THE DRUM LANDFILL, PAINT SLUDGE TRENCH, AND MISCELLANEOUS CONTAMINATED AREAS;
• THE PROXIMITY OF KIMBALL AND SLOCUM DRAINS.

"ABOVE. THE DIRECTION OF MOVEMENT IN THE BEDROCK AQUIFER IS GENERALLY TO THE NORTHWEST. DUE TO THECOMPLEXITY OF THE GEOLOGIC AND HYDROLOGIC CONDITIONS IN THE UNCONSOLIDATED MATERIALS (E.G. DISCONTINUOUS BEARING SAND BASES INTERSPERSED IN A MIX OF SILT, CLAY, GRAVEL, AND BOULDERS), GROUND WATER MOVEMENT IS NOT LIMITED TO ONE DIRECTION.

THE SCOPE OF FOCUSED FEASIBILITY STUDY (FFS) COVERS THE SOLID AND LIQUID HAZARDOUS MATERIALS CONTAINED ON SITE IN THE DRUM LANDFILLS (LARGE 1.23 ACRE AREA AND TWO SMALL .09 AND .08 ACRE AREAS), A PAINT SLUDGE TRENCH (.2 ACRES), TWO SUBSURFACE AGRICULTURAL DRAINS CONTAINING APPROXIMATELY 3,300 CUBIC YARDS OF CONTAMINATED SOIL, AND NUMEROUS SMALL, ISOLATED BURIAL AREAS CONTAINING DRUMS, LIQUIDS, PAINT SLUDGES, AND SOLVENTS WITH AN ESTIMATED VOLUME OF 2,000 CUBIC YARDS (SEE FIGURE 2). SURFACE WATER RESOURCES WHICH HAVE BEEN AFFECTEDARE THE SLOCUM AND KIMBALL DRAINS, WHICH RECEIVE SURFACE WATER FROM BERLIN AND FARRO AND EMPTY INTO SWARTZ CREEK. THESE SURFACE WATER RESOURCES ARE NOT USED FOR DRINKING WATER BUT ARE USED FOR RECREATION PURPOSES."

Sounds like two things. First get out of the water for recreational purposes. Two, who is actually supposed to stop this and who is getting paid to let it happen?

First off, I'm not implying that the practices of this dump didn't affect the quality of the drinking water, but for the poster that said that seepage was the only issue was inaccurate. If you are going to insult someone for a post saying they don't know what they're talking, please be sure you are right. Air pollutant would for sure have contributed to the problem since they were burning and releasing toxins into the air. The toxins get sent up into the air, get blown by the wind, find a new spot to settle, and that spreads contamination. Seepage would also be a problem, but definitely is not the only culprit.

Also, please don't say that the only reason the arsenic level is high near the area is due to the dumping. Michigan in general has higher than acceptable levels of arsenic in all our well water. My grandparents lived in Fenton and got water quality reports every year suggesting that young children and older citizens limit their consumption of the water due to the arsenic levels. I'm not saying that the dump site has not contributed to the rise of cancer rates, but please be aware that the area is not the only place with high arsenic levels.

Do not trust Senator Blumenthal from Connecticut for any help in getting a healthy resolution with this. He has dismissed several suits to clean up dumpsites and has created laws and policy to make the dumps legal to stay. He called himself "The Environmental Attorney General" for twenty years. During his time as A.G. for Ct. there has been record dumping of toxic waste , even from New York. He has family that owns a lot of media so he looks like a good guy but he's just a crook that likes to create laws so they can steal.

Good for you! However, I grew up right by the dumpsite while it was active. Guess what? 40 years later and I have brain cancer! Yay for me. I live an extremely active and healthy lifestyle. I am educated and other than this cancer I have a wonderful life. Speaking as someone going through cancer I can guarantee that these people are not doing this for ATTENTION! Shame on you. As for your grammar, I can tell you are not the most highly educated so I will cut you some slack. BTW, I don't need nor want any attention.

Well I lived closer to the site than anyone posted here to date I believe, our property perimetered the actual dump. My parents were featured on the cover of "Life" magazine at the time over the incident. SO Mr Abe, unless you have had the actual lab results in your hands as my parents have, unless you have lived with the strange and ongoing health issues.. I don't think you should go siting results. I am now 48 and have had multiple tumors for years and have been fighting cancer for the last 4 years and this morning as a matter of fact get to go to the hospital with my halo MRI results so they can name the two brain tumors that have just been discovered. So don't tell me this lands clay was too thick for the chemicals to seep into the wells surrounding this land and don't say that years of activity didn't affect the people in the immediate area. You may say that they (Berlin and Farro may not have realized the actual harm being done since they also endangered themselves and their own families...but don't be so idiotic as to say no harm was done. And as far as digging in the clay I wish someone would have told my father you couldn't dig in the soil because we as teenagers would not have had to weed the almost acre garden he planted along side the dump land where we harvested fresh vegetables, so we got the chemicals from the water, the food and the fumes. PS Mr Abe the intensity of the lab work that was done on the immediate residents coupled with the fact the results were so consistent means what? someone paid the lab techs to make Berlin and Farro look bad???? Sorry but I am going to take the word of technology over the word of even a nice old gentleman at the county, I grew up in a small town I understand the good ole boy system. By the way what are your credentials concerning this matter? Not quite the articulation I would expect from someone in a professional position, it seems you would like us to believe your post...are they facts or your views? Just curious.
I would be interested in knowing more about your brain tutors as that is what I am fighting right now. If a link between this dump and these tumor it may help with further research. Please email me at reid1416@gmail.com.
Thank you!

My sister's husband's family lived right down the road from there from 1975-1999.. in 2001 he died from brain cancer, the week before he died his mother died also from brain cancer (following breast cancer), the youngest sister has battled leukemia for over 12 years.. coincidence that 3 members from one family having cancer?? I think not. Even when they were sick and going through treatment all 3 at the same time, there was discussion about them living so close. look at the site from google maps.

There is no way that it is a mere coincidence that there are so many of us who grew up or lived by Berlin & Farro now have or have had cancer. I would be interested in finding out what type of brain cancer your sister's husband had as I am currently fighting brain cancer. My email address is: reid1416@gmail.com.

Based on all of these post that I have read, I might have made a big mistake in signing a rental lease for a house in the 8000 block of Morrish rd. The landlord stated that this was cleaned up years ago. Now I am afaid to move my family in. I am in the process of seeing what I can do to void this lease. Has anybody else that has moved to the area since the "clean up" been affected with cancer or related illness??

....Maybe with an unsafe water test. You have to watch the detect levels on the test though. Like here in Ct. the average detect level is 2.5 mg per litre. That is how much of any one item is in the water before the test can even "see"it. The action level for lead, as an example, is 0.15, just a fraction of the detect level. They raise that level to say the water is safe since they cannot detect anything in it! Find out what compounds , poisons or the whatever is in the water there and get a sensitive test. This is a suggestion based on what I have experienced here in Ct. These new legal tricks are thanks to now senator blumenthal who was our Attornet General for 20 years, a big crook.
