10 acres in Arenas Valley up in flames AFTER the vendors stopped selling fireworks in Silver City. And it was NOT caused by fireworks. So much for feelgood bans.

The concerned citizens who support the ban on fireworks this year do not believe that fireworks are the ONLY THING that causes fires that destroy property. That would be really stupid! There are numerous possible causes and it just makes good sense to take fireworks out of the picture to decrease the number by at least one.

You people do realize that you don't actually have to be lighting up fireworks right on the dry vegetation to start a fire, right?? It has been windy, as well as not having any rain. The wind is one of the biggest fuels of fire, so when you light up your fireworks on the street, and the wind carries the spark to the dry vegetation: FIRE!!!
I'm not big on government putting their nose in private citizens business, but, unfortunately there are times when temporary measures (bans) have to be put in place. Not all fires are human caused, but a lot of the fires are, and by just plain stupidity (welding near dry vegetation, throwing cigarettes, emptying hot ashes outside, playing with firecrackers, etc.) It's too bad you can't fine people for stupidity!!!

The score so far in the Southwest:

Fireworks fires: Zero
Fires from OTHER sources...a LOT!

If we start banning things for what they MAY do, we will lose our personal freedoms and liberties very quickly. Automobiles kill more people in a year than fires. Want to ban them too? When does PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY come into play? Banning things "for the greater good" sures sounds like a principle of a dictatorship or socialism. With freedom comes responsibility. INDIVIDUAL responsibility. So if an individual acts in an irresponsible manner, go after the INDIVIDUAL...not a whole group of innocent people.

Quite true. It's also too bad people feel the need to punish the many for the sins of a few.
