Oklahoma Lawmakers Push Shelters For Mobile Home Parks

Several Oklahoma lawmakers are pushing for more storm shelters they say would save lives at mobile home parks.

It is a shame but alot of parks are like insurance companies. They look for everyway to squeeze a dollar out of you but when there is a claim they look for every single loophole to get out of paying.

Its a shame but one park I have been in the road has caved in due to a water main leaking. They put up a metal handrail in the sunken portion of the road and its been that way for at least 3 months or more. But when its time to pay I hear the residents have to pay up on time.

All parks should have a storm shelter that I feel is neccessary since trailors are not as sturdy as a regular house would be.

I would like to see a requirement that every developer (mobile park or not) have to put a "safe room" or storm shelter every two blocks in the additions. With the cost spread out this way, each builder could pay their portion and pass the cost on to the people buying the houses at the time they buy them. THIS would save a lot of lives.

Oh well that is true. That is something I realize about Oklahoma even with there homes. Kansas Homes have basements. Oklahoma homes don't when I was looking at some homes in Jenks. There where no Basements. The homes where on a slack foundation. And I ask the the real estate agents what do you do if you have a tornado. He said that you have to buy a storm shelter. And I said that is scary when you live in Tornado Alley. So Yes I push with the lawyers that are saying they need a storm shelter. It's OK to be Country but don't play suicide with you and your families lives. Because you can die just to live cheap playing with Oklahoma and there storms that comes every year. SO wake up and get you some kind of protection to save you and your families life in State of disaster. So be safe and not dum. Wise man listen foolish man don't

So why do I need to pay for other people's tornado shelters?? Seriously people. I'm sure if they all save the money from their satellite TV they would have it fully paid for and then some within 6 months. I think everyone needs somewhere to seek shelter when the weather is BAD but do i want to pay for it...sorry but no...with the way everything is right now i can barley pay for myself and the things that i need...even working a full time job and making decent money. Call me heartless but i'm just being honest. The state and ODOT are looking to use my tax dollars and everyone else's anyway that they can, on things that do not matter [like putting in a railroad from, tulsa to OKC] for say: and i'm fed up.

I think using tax dollars for shelters in public parks should be a vote of the people. Trailer parks, NO !!!
The problem with building these shelters is someone must be responsible for it. If not, it becomes a place for illicit activity and vandelism.

Why do people have the mentality that the government needs to do everything for us? Why don't you people say "man these people need to do something for themselves"? All you people saying "we need a law" go and open your wallet and build storm shelters for these people if you think it is so important. Stay out of my wallet; I'm to busy paying for lazy peoples welfare and other handouts to start building shelters for people who choose to live in a trailer.

I wouldn't expect those who don't utilize the turnpike to pay a toll, so as long as those who opt to reside at a mobile home park are the ones that are in/directly paying for it then I have no problem with the idea. Fires perhaps kill far more than storms, yet, are smoke alarms and fire extinguishers required in mobile homes?(or any home for that matter) What about apartment complex? again, if it comes about that multi-family units are required to build a shelter do so at the resident's cost, not us who do not reside there.

This is another area that politicians are holloring about because it gets them a lot of attention. If you own a trailer and look into putting it in a trailer park and dont like their setup then dont move there. This is like saying a neighborhood should have a shelter for all its residents. Bull, let people make their own decisions. Government stay out of business that is non of yours.

Many Oklahoma homes have basements. I grew up in Tulsa in a house with a full size basement. It depends on where you look. The older two story homes in the Maple Ridge and Sunset Terrace areas practically all have basements.

While putting shelters in trailer parks is a great idea, we all shouldn't have to pay for it. I liked snickers123 idea about the housing developments passing it on with the cost of the house. If they want trailer parks to put them in they just need to increase the rent a little to help cover the costs.

While it sounds like a good idea to require the shelters, just where do we draw the line in government telling us what we have to do. Why only mobile home? Why not residences?..and why not businesses? I thought we had a a right to a free market, the choice to live where someone invests in a shelter or builds one themselves or to live where it is cheaper? Why is it the governments job to tell us how to live? If they can require this, why did they allow New Orleans to be rebuilt or build anywhere that common sense says is unsafe? Oh, well.....
