We just had our first negative situation in Carbondale since closing on our home in November. We've only been going up on weekends. A man in raggedy clothes(yes, clothes sometimes do make the man) approached my daughter and told her to go back to India. My daughter looks about as Indian as Hillary Clinton looks like Obama. So she went "Pffffft" a sort of wet laugh opener and then laughed. This guy actually started approaching her. Then something terrible happened to him. The End.
I still love that little crappy town with the little crappy roads and the Town Council that couldn't shoot straight. I tire of the stupid ideas like parking garages and building huge hotel complexes when all it would take is a revamp of the old Ames Plaza and surrounding area. Easier said than done, but worth the risk. Crooked developers are the wrong way to go.

I just found this sight while doing a search for Fell High School (my alma mater). I must say that the reading was both humorous and heart breaking. I've read the word scum bag more in the last 2 hours than I have in the past 40 years of my life. I left Carbondale (Simpson) 30 years ago. I have been back many times... it will always be home. The people who are native Carbondaleans are some of the neatest, kindest people I have come across in my entire life. I get a kick out of the "Mike Touch" comments.m I worked with Mike at the Big Chief in c'dale when we were both in High School. From what I have read of his posts, he hasn't changed much.
There is a saying here in the south. "You are either part of the problem or part of the solution". It's easy to criticize the things that the Mayor is trying to do, or his dream for the city. But at least is trying to be part of the solution. I give him high marks for that...as should all of us. The world is full of givers and takers, Carbondale is no different.

We just moved from Carbondale, not because of the problems but because we couldn't afford to travel to Tennessee anymore from high gas prices. There are lots of beautiful, awesome gorgeous old Victorian houses in Carbondale, ours is one of them (on the corner of S. Main and Pike). It's up on the market now; it was like a mini castle. I miss my friends, my neighbors, the Corner Bistro's shows and fabulous food, and our beautiful home. Carbondale has it's pluses and minuses just like every town but you can't match the uniqueness and beauty of some of the homes there.

Christina, what's it on the market for? Is it the big blue castle on the edge of Biz 6? I love that place. I hope you get what it's worth. Don't let some crook from the east offer you a few bucks. Give ME time to build up another down payment and we'll talk terms. My goal is to eat Victorians for breakfast. Good luck with the sale.

Hi, we just lowered it to $87,900 today and yes it's the big blue castle. We need to sell it, fast. It's in beautiful condition and I hate to have to sell it but we had no choice but to relocate because it was getting too expensive gas-wise for my husband to see his son. Definately if you are interested in it contact my realtor (Hibble & Associates Weichert). At least call them to go see it, it's an incredible house and we've done so much work to it.

And while you're at it...go check out the Corner Bistro! I LOVED their shows, their food rocked, they were the best. Tears come to my eyes when I think of how much I miss that little slice of heaven in Carbondale. I was especially fond of their Halloween show which was a munsters-ish spoof of Tony & Tina's Wedding.

Those are my memories of Carbondale.
Mine too! I probably will never have an opportunity to go back to Carbondale since both of my parents have passed away in the last few years, but my memories involve absolutely every one of the things you listed! Sounds like your high school years were late 60's/early 70's...

I was born and raised in C'dale, moved away for 10 years and came back.. why because I missed the small town atmosphere. Yes it has it's down side but as someone else said it is what you make of it.
It could be a quaint little town but we the citizens have to build it up not degrade it. We have a lot of advantages in that we are witing driving distance to NY, Philadelphia & Atlantic City. If we could crack down on the corrupt government and the drugs we might be able to be proud of our little town once again. But then again what city/town does not have these same problems only on a bigger scale?
For those who complain last time I checked it was a free country and you could move away anytime you liked right??? So what's keeping you here?
Goodluck with that

Jim i lived in carbondale pa for the first 20 years of my life and i did is count the days till i was able to leave. it is one of the most useless towns in the U.S. The schools (which still have the same teachers i did and some of my former classmates) are a joke i was able to do nothing from 3rd grade all the way to 12th. i regret it now but you live and learn. the commerce there is all mom and pops you have to drive 45 min to go to the closest real store. industry has grown alot since i have left but not much. Good jobs are hard to come by there. Unless you were in the service and get a job at the prisons in waymart. If you have children be very cautious about c'dale. If you dont like to hunt fish there is nothing to do except drink beer on road trips or in the woods which happens every night summer or winter so dont be fooled. there is also i higher chances you kids will smoke by the age of 11-13 and be smoking marijuana by the 9th grade. and doing worse by the time they hit 18. this goes for the rich as well as the poor. poor being the greater of the two. hey my email is lcplsmith_2299@yahoo.com if you want ask about any other towns from up there hit me up

u r so right. my sister moved to Carbondale fron the Poconos 5 years ago. The school system is horrible. The town reminds me of ald amish town. It wasnt until she moved to carbondale that she found herself on narcotics from certain doctors there. She started to be addicted to them. I'm told it's extremely easy to just walk down a road and you can buy any drug you want. Unfortunally she died in 5/06 from an overdose. She left behind 5 children who all had learning disabilities ( I wonder Why) I have custody on 1 of the chilrern as far as his education goes he should be in the eighth grade but is only starting the sixth because he hasn't leaned a thing in the carbobdale school district. I live in NJ The cst tells me he belongs in the 3rd grade what a shame. And youre right about the kids smoking cigs and weed all her older children ages 15 to 18 all smoke both. They learned it from the streets cause thier isn't anything better for them to do. it's so sad. It nice to see that someone out there feels the same as I do. Thanks

It is wonderful that you are stepping up to the plate and taking care of your nephew. I wouldn't blame the smoking on the town, however. Some kids are determined to do it and will find it no matter where you take them. Ever hear about the drugs in boarding schools, tourist cities abroad, prisons, etc.?
About the school system: it didn't do well for my brother, even back in the seventies, but i know some of the teachers and they are decent hard-working people. What's to be done about the lazy, incompetent ones? It is close to impossible to fire them. This is a nation-wide problem, and all the good teachers get tarred by the same brush.

Carbondale, I have living in Carbondale all 21 years of my life.

Umm, it depend's on how you look at it. Yes, Carbondale Area Jr/Sr High School does suck for the most part, although their are some nice teachers there.

Crime and young people with babies, drugs, etc. yea there is quite a bit of it, but im sure Carbondale is not the only place that this occurs.

There are also some very well educated people in Carbondale.

I was raised right and I am a junior in college.

However, it is true that their is nothing to do in Carbondale. I have been reading some of the comments and skimming here. Memories LOL!. Most are gone of those places you mentioned sorry to tell you.

The Crystal Resturaunt, I don't remember it, but I do know what you are talking about. The building is still there, but the resturaunt closed years ago.

Newberry's is gone. I loved that store as a little girl. It was turned into a dollar store around the late 90s and went out of business completly about 3 years ago. The building is there, but it's empty.

The karawana is still up and running and yummy, but my parents say it isnt what it used to be.

Pioneer Days at the City building. I remember that from when I was a little girl. It is now Pioneer Nights, but it is not the same. No rides, just food stands and like 2 kiddie games.

The Russel Park Carnival does still exist. However, it has gotten skummy.

The Irving Theater has not been in operation for many years. It was painted about 10 years ago to look like it used to with people, booths, etc painted on the building. However, they tore the whole thing down about 5 years ago.

The Circle Drive in is about 10 minutes outside of Carbondale. It is still up and running.

Wal-mart is about 15 minutes away as is the mall, a lot of resturaunts, home depot, lowes, kmart, target, etc.

The only things in Carbondale on Brooklyn Street left are near the high school and there is a Burger King, a clothing store (that i hate) called Peebles (Ames is gone to btw thats where Peebles is), Dollar Tree, CVS Pharmacy, Weis groccery store, Blockbuster, a packaging place for UPS, Hallmark, and a McDonalds. We also in Carbondale have several banks, several gas stations, several dollar stores, several bars, and several mini-marts (I work at one for spending money part time LOL!).

There i summed it up for you as best I can. Hope it helped.

Take Care,
Christina

You can say all your thoughts about Carbondale
and look around at what it became.
and where it should go.
But still nothing has ben done much and people still haven't learn how to vote and over ride the truth.
Think about this..........
Whats wrong with this big Picture ...HUH.....!!!
