Please continue to keep us up to date. 'Can't really get info anywhere else except KHUM and that is pretty sporadic. Last we heard, the school is still on lock-down. Thanks, T-S

You're an idiot. It's a scary time for parents of kids at Pacific Union and at the Hospital. Not time to joke or spew your political rage.

Lock down lifted. All persons ok, thank god! The APD did a fantastic job on sweeping the area to keep students, staff members, & patients safe.

I just asked a question. I'm not concerned because an extremely vocal group in this country says it's o.k. to openly carry guns so it must be one of those people, right?

I had a 9:30 doctors appointment in the building in front of Mad River and when I went in the driveway there were deputy sheriffs and Arcata police all around the hospital and the school. One of the two sheriffs at the entrance escorted me right to my doctor's office door. They all knew what they were doing. Made me feel safe in a kind of scary situation.

My grandson attends Pacific Union. When the lockdown took place I got calls on my office, cell, and home phones at the same time. When it was lifter the same thing occurred. Thank you Pacific Union for keeping us parents and grandparents well informed about our special loved ones.

I'm happy your grandson and the other kids were protected, and you were kept updated.

You know, I don't like paying my property or other taxes any more than anyone else does. But seeing how well the police, sheriff and school people handled what could have been a tragedy, I realize taxes are necessary and they have obviously spent my money wisely, practicing for and now actually dealing with this. You can't put a price on that.
Thanks you

It is good that this event went without some one getting hurt.

Just curious how the system works: "Why did this go through the San Francisco Crisis Hotline?" Is there not something similar in this area?

No matter whick crisis line, the quick response sounds great.

Middle of the road - just as you speak about the 'tea baggers' who MUST be the ones that want guns guns guns .. you MUST be a left extremist then!! I dont think that it's people wanting guns who are just the tea baggers, the tea baggers dont want the govt to keep spending tax payer dollars, has NOTHING to do with guns! The people that dont want gun laws to be restricted or taken away for that matter, just dont want the ONLY people that have the guns to be criminals and police! I don't think that would make the world any safer! Unfortunately this time it was a child playing a prank, of which hopefully he will be repremanded when he gets home.. I wish the political world would just get rid of all the extremists!!! UGH!! They are ruining this country! Lets get back to what is right and what is wrong here! How about ethics, does anyone even know what that means anymore!!! I think NOT!

It wasn't a kid pulling the prank, the call came from the hospital, read the Time-Standard article not the blogger.

Wrong... That's an uneducated gerneralization. In fact, most crimes that happen in Humboldt appear to be drug related. One of "Those people" you are referring to, resembles your grandmother vice a gun toting criminal. What many people don't understand is that this Tea Party movement is made up of people from all parties who want FISCAL responsibilites.

But just like the people who are screaming racial profiling in AZ, without reading the 10 page bill, some will keep saying what they hear from others without getting any facts of their own.

Thank several of you for making my point. If we allow "open carry" how in the hell do you know when a threat is real and when an incident is just someone exercising their "rights"? Several of you applauded law enforcement for the wise use of your taxes, well how would you feel if law enforcement spent ALL their resources (your taxes) continually checking out hundreds or even thousands of people who are just exhibiting the right?

What? Your stream-of-consciousness is a fine example of how a certain element in our population confuse rights with laws. Not to mention, you're talking about open cary vice the right to own a weapon. As the law stands now, it is illegal to be in certain establishments like bars, schools, etc with an open carry (having a pistol, for example, with the magazine INSERTED). So that's that. To say law inforcement would be spending all of their resources and our tax dollars is a huge exageration. Reread the T-S article. A man was seen at a SCHOOL with a weapon...ILLEGAL.

Your argument is fallible for many reasons. The most important is that you speculate without an understanding of what you are talking about.

Nobody is advacating any other laws that don't already exist. Open carry is legal, but strictly prohibed in certain public places.

A man was seen at a Hospital, not school. Which by the way is also illegal for to carry a weapon openly.
