Edmond senior nutrition program closed - KFOR

They're still tap dancing at the Edmond Senior Center. They're also still playing pool and card games.

I can't believe what this country is coming to.
44 % of congress makes over 1 million dollars a year and yet
this government can't/wont pay up to feed our elderly.
Is anybody getting a clue that we're in trouble here!!

With all the mansions and wealth in north edmond, dont you think they could share some of that with the elderly and support part of the program? I guess not- they are republicans and dont believe in "sharing the wealth"-- The government is supposed to feed the aged (but wait--they dont believe in government programs either.. oh my)... So what might be the answer from the rich?

Words fail me to describe my disappointment, that we no longer honor our elderly, even as we enjoy the fruits of their labors. We must remember that they have done every thing for us, their children. That the citizen of Edmond cannot care for the elderly in such a manner, for the sake of "cut-backs" speaks poorly of how we treat ourselves, and others..

All I can say is that by taking care of our older generation in this manner, we, the sandwich generation, are sure not showing our children how we want to be treated by them. We need to take care of the entire older genteration. Just because people are old, doesn't mean they don't want to have a life too! It is called having respect and caring about others for the sake of humanity!
It doens't have to do with whether we are Republican or Democrat.....It is our duty as American Citizens to help take care of all of our older people as well as younger people in our country. Do what is right, do unto others as you would want others to do unto you.

I think this is crazy,our elderly people are what made this a United State,how can we sit here and allow this to happen. I don't care if I am PC or not.You walk into any grocery store and you see a person that is in their 20-30's and they have a buggy full of food, most of it junk food and they pay with food stamps.They have never worked a day in their life and have one bay after anotherAnd we pay for them.Yet here we have people that worked in the cotton fields, did laundry by hand,raised their children with faith and a STRONG HAND,but they have to do without . When are we going to wake up and see what is going on .I am so disgusted I think I will move to another country.I hope they treat thier elderly better than we treat ours.

Yes it is pretty sad, as I was growing up in the late 40's in Oklahoma City, I could tell you everyones name on our block. And my parents and all the neighbours took care of one another, and the Church would allways step in and give food,help with a Bill if needed no one went without we took care of one another. Sorry, I meant Churches all denomonations helped one another. Funny how times have changed,(Sad) I haven't changed if I can help someone I will, then I will tell my nearest neighbor if it is more than I can handle alone, then they will help also.
I guess the moral to this story is we didn't have Government assistant, we took care of our own, so why should we depend so much on the Government if we won't do it ourselves. Doesn't seem so much like Charity that way. Then we learn to Vote right then things will change for the better. To much Politics in our lives and Ball Games.

So, let me get this straight, if we complain enough we can get the 7.8 million to feed the old folks in 3 centers? Did he mean what he said? I am ashamed that a man of such stature could say that without blinking an eye. Hey, if it takes that much money to manage a few meals, than I want the job. I am certain I and a bunch of high school students could save about 7 million a year and keep the feeding stations open for our elderly!!!

No, if we can get Obama and his cronies out of office, then maybe the government will do the right thing and fund the elderly. Everybody wants to blame the latest woes on Bush, but Bush has done better than what Obama is doing. At least Bush didnt put a death warrant in his health reform, at least he didnt deny elderly people medicade or medicare. Wake up folks, our elderly are going to die soon because of Obama.

This is sad, I think that the state should have cut back on the cost of electricity by simply having all the employees cut the lights off when they leave their offices, this really works and would definitely make up for the $1.50 per meal.

Please try to restart the program. There are so many rich people who live in the state one can make tax deductable donation and help this problem. There so many people who gamble, drink, waste money on all the things that are not needs and not to care for others. It is a sad commentary that our cities and state with a such large budgets feel program cuts for the elderly, sick and infirm, homeless, homebound and poor are appropriate places to make large reductions.
Is it because the elderly have no one in positions of authority to stand up for them and speak for them?
Disappointing to say the least.

I think this is a shame that we can afford sports arenas, etc., but cannot feed our elderly. I pay school taxes, have no children, can I not direct where I'd like my tax dollars spent? Please, feed our elderly...I'd give $1.50 a day to help!

This is how the agencies work. Don't have money cut programs that will get the most response and then officials will give the money to the agencies and to run the programs.. Seen it happen time and time again. Its sad that it works that way ... The budget gave raises to a few cause our elected leaders didn't give them all the monies the agency asked for BUT the Representatives and Senate did have money for their raises and programs for our TEACHERS, POLICE .. So now we know who or what is important and that is no suprise educate the children, protect the people and ones who make the laws not for the people who have worked for years and should be enjoying life. These people are the ones forgotten.

Problem with that is they would just put it in the DHS AGENCY general fund and then distributed out.. Wouldn't do any good. The state doesn't want to spend any more than they have too. Right now any funds they use are matched with federal funds .. Doesn't make much sense to me that the state don't have funds for sr. meals but do to give themselves a raise and thus DHS did the same.. I think they should have DHS head man step down. Its not like the person was elected by the people nor hired HES APPOINTED.

Many of you missed the point.The STATE has lost tax revenue and cannot afford to keep food on the table. President Obama has nothing to do with it. Who is cutting taxes??? Which party wants tax cuts?
The state of oklahoma has cut taxes and now cannot pay the bills, including food for the elderly center. It is time for all of us wake up and pay our share of taxes for the needs of the people. Oh, to those who talk about the people who do not work and get benefits, I"m over 65 and i get benefits paid for by the rest of the working population. It's called social security! It's that public insurance program!

This is outrageous. So more Oklahoma seniors going without what might be there only hot meal or healthy meal a day. Oklahoma government get your heads on straight. Get your priorities straight just because we are seniors does not mean we have money, social security is a joke. It does not mean we do not get hungry or are not worth a meal. Maybe Oklahoma people need to examine their political leaders closer and chose more wisely at election time. Where did the money go and where are they wasting it now. Tell our elected officials to go with out a meal and maybe they could find the money

I do not call him God but what did we see with Republicans in office, this man walked into a mess left by Republicans. Get off the soap box and pull out 1.50 out of your pocket - Like the government should. Stop wasting time griping about a man who is doing a good job or good as he can considering the mess Republicans left and get this center open for meals

I'm on SS also and you paid into that all your life. I doubt if you are getting much or any on your 401K (that program was a joke) Tax revenue maybe down but I that didn't stop the salaries that our elected officals got.. And didn't stop DHS from giving raises to only a selected few..
