Denver Simmons Proved Competent posted 5:40 pm Wed January 30, 2008 - Colleton County, SC tags: denver simmons • competency hearing • double homicide • crime
related stories: Carolina Cold Case, Murder Of Richard Simmons The man accused of killing a Colleton County mother and her teenage son got his first day in court Wednesday. The suspect, 26-year-old Denver Simmons, has been proved competent enough to stand trial. This ruling means Simmons will go through trial, but before any of that happens, his public defender wants to determine if he was sane at the time of the murders. Denver Simmons is accused of killing 45-year-old Sheila Dodd and her 13-year-old son William. The two disappeared in May of last year. Simmons was arrested days later and then led authorities to the bodies. Months later, he sits in shackles, waiting on a judge to determine if he's stable enough to go through trial. “I’ve got real doubts about whether he was stable in any way at that time, but we need experts to tell us that,” Simmons’ public defender Harris Beach said. Simmons defense will file a motion to have him evaluated. No date has been set for the sanity hearing. Simmons is charged with two counts of murder, grand larceny, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and forgery. http://www.wciv.com/news/stories/0108/492241.... |

Prosecutor to Seek Death Penalty in Denver Simmons Case posted 4:56 pm Fri September 19, 2008 - Walterboro, SC (AP)-- Prosecutors plan to seek a death sentence if a man is convicted of killing a Colleton County woman and her son last year. The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that prosecutor Duffie Stone announced plans to seek a death sentence after a judge ruled Thursday that Denver Jordan Simmons is mentally competent to stand trial. Simmons is charged with murder in the deaths of 45-year-old Sheila Faye Dodd and her 13-year-old son, William, at their Round O home in May 2007. Investigators say Simmons shot them and apparently tried to burn the bodies before dumping the remains in separate locations about four miles apart. The Dodds were last seen May 1. Her car was found in Fort Oglethorpe, near the Georgia-Tennessee line two days later. No trail date has been set. |

Man Faces Double Murder Charges
Submitted by Kristen Johnson on May 8, 2007 - 10:09pm. News Comments Below: 0 Last night officers arrested 26-year-old Denver Simmons at a Chattanooga hospital. They charged him with murder in connection to the death of Sheila and Will Dodd. At a Chattanooga health facility a manhunt which spanned 3 states and nearly five-hundred miles comes to an end. Police arrested 26-year-old Denver Simmons and charged him with murder after Sheila Dodd and her 13-year-old son Will went missing a week ago in South Carolina. Ft. Oglethorpe Police Chief Larry Black says, "It appears that Simmons and a girlfriend had relocated to the South Carolina area and were living with Ms. Dodd and her son...apparently some kind of dispute..and he moved out of that residence and at some point returned to the residence and some time of altercation took place." Police say Simmons stole Shelia Dodd's SUV and traveled to Georgia. It was at Hutcheson Medical Center in Fort Olgethorpe that Simmons left the car and apparently met up with his mom last Thursday. Black says, "We know that he spent the night at a motel that night here in Ft. Oglethorpe. We had a registration card that had his name on it and his mother's name on it that we recovered after the fact he left the area that would indicate he stayed in that room sometime during the night. As police impounded Shelia Dodd's SUV, the search continued for Simmons. Not until Monday did police find out that Simmons checked himself into Parkridge Valley Hospital in Chattanooga. Tuesday Simmons went in front of a Hamilton County judge and agreed to go back to South Carolina to murder face charges. http://wdef.com/node/4902 |

We now know more about a missing persons case from South Carolina and it's ties to Chattanooga. Friday night we told you about the suspect in the case, who is confirmed to be here in the Tennessee Valley. Back in South Carolina, where the victims and suspects are from, police searched for more clues Saturay. The Cobbleton County Sheriff's Office was on Sheila and William Dodd's property. They tested for blood and also found bullet shells. The suspect is now at mental hospital in the Tennessee Valley, his name is not yet being released. The suspects link to our area was discovered Thursday, when Fort Oglethorpe Police tell us he was here. Several places nearby Hutcheson Medical Center in Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga., were shut down while the suspect was on the loose. Someone helped him get from Ft. Oglethorpe to that mental health facility. However, there are still many unanswered questions. Tammy Cole with Hutcheson tells us, "Officials were notified on Thursday around noon that there was a wanted suspect in the area and it was our understanding that he was dangerous, so at that time we notified our security." Local security stepped in as well, the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department and Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Saturday, Cole says the hospital wasn't on an official lockdown. The concern came Thursday morning when the suspect in the missing persons case of Sheila Dodds and her son William Dodds from south carolina was confirmed to be here in the Tennessee Valley. Authorities say the man has family in Northwest Georgia. http://www.newschannel9.com/articles/suspect-... |
