I too wept at the human tragedy in our small community. Now the poor mother will have to live with this for the rest of her life. Too many I have talked to have exhibited an all too familiar human reaction: assigning blame. Where does it lie? Does it really matter? What good will it result in? Hug your child with all your might. Be glad it wasn't you or yours. Pray for the family and especially for the mother.

Does it really matter? What? Where the responsibility of this child's death lies? Are you kidding?

Here is the problem. So many times we have listened to crying mothers that their kids were stolen. And guess what? It turns out that they killed the children themselves. Here is another woman who claims that even though she took her baby to the day care near her job, she just happened to forget on the hottest day of the year. How do you forget that you have your CHILD in your car???? Come on! Do I see another SUSAN SMITH?

I have to agree!!!
There is no way she just forgot about a baby in the car.
You mean to tell me that the baby remained absolutely silent the entire ride to work? You mean to tell me that she never looked in rearview mirror, not even once, and saw the baby back there?
I'll bet she didn't forget to stop for coffee before work. I'll bet she didn't forget to put on her makeup, or lock her house before leaving.
New mothers NEVER forget about their brand new baby. It is on their minds 24/7. They brag about the baby to friends and co-workers non-stop. It is what practically every woman thinks about from childhood!
There is more to this story than just being absent minded!

I think because some of them were downright nasty. Accusing of the mother of pre meditated murder and people wanted her to go to jail.
I think she is guilty of negligence, I don't think it was pre meditated.
The first poster here on this thread says they feel for the mother, I feel for the baby more.
Also in the original thread, an eyewitness said the mother was screaming that she wanted to kill herself.
So what ever we think, or cannot comprehend how she forgot her baby, this woman's mental torment goes way beyond anything jail could ever do to her.

I am guilty of saying horrible things on the last thread! I did use the word murder. I do hold the mother responsible no matter what her torment is now. I was just so furious that this happened and so heartbroken at how that child must have suffered. I guess it makes sense that the thread was taken down.

It just doesn't make sense to me that you could forget your child. But then again nothing in this world makes sense anymore.

I applaud you for the sake of that child, his family and any siblings that might see the terrible things stated on this site.

You've done the right thing for everyone....

I was previously lambasted for saying this, but I will try again. Someone posted that the daycare gets paid whether the child is there or not. I asked, since they're getting paid, why not check on a child that is not there? Some said the workers are to busy for that, and it is up to the parents to call and tell them if a child will not be there. How much longer can it take to make a call than to take a call? Also, another poster talked about a sensor of some type that could sound an alarm if a child is inadvertently left secured in a childseat. Today's technology would make that a very plausible option. Neither of these solutions will help this baby, but it could help to avoid a similar situation in the future. Lastly, I am positively astounded at the number of people who think it is impossible to forget something important. I find it not much different than someone who gos off and leaves an iron plugged in only to return to a burning house. Of course in that instance, these same people would probably say the did it for the insurance, without even knowing whether they had insurance or not.

I feel so sorry for this mother, and the father who will most likely never forgive her. The poor child, and I pay for all of them.
A mistake that will never go away.
god bless them

I agree with you. I also ask how can anyone forget that their child is in the back seat of the car? And again, I think she should be charged!

When is she going to be charged with endangering the welfare of a child, criminal negligence or involuntary manslaughter????????

My heart goes out to everyone in this family. Such a tragic loss.

While I find it hard that someone forgot about their baby in the backseat, I'm not sure the mother should be punished by law. It seems like this was a tragic accident.

I agree, maybe there should be some sort of safeguards for this to be prevented. Besides common sense that is. If we can have automatic door openers for cars, navigational devices, etc, why not have one that alerts you to a body temp after the vehicle is turned off? It'd be interesting to see if any of the auto manufacturers could do this.

For everyone with a little compassion, think what it must be like to have two young children at home. Every mother of more than one child knows that life is hectic. Nerves are stretched thin and descent sleep is non-existent.(BTW, where was the 2 year old and where was the father in all this?)

Drawing from personal experence, I once had to call the day care to make sure I dropped off my kids because I truly could not remember if I had left home without them or they were still in the car. That is what sleep deprivation can do to you, among many other things.

This woman will suffer for the rest of her life. She will be stared at when she goes out in public. Her name will be everywhere and on everyone's lips. Historically, marriages seldom survive accidents such as this and her family will be further torn apart.

All we can really do is to pray for her and her family. May they find peace.
