A sweet and innocent teen dies

A 19-year-old Mineral resident was killed Friday night after a two-car crash on East Old Mountain Road in Louisa County.

Virginia State Police spokesman Tom Cunningham said Matthew Ryan Farmer was not wearing a seat belt. He died at the scene of the wreck, which occurred at about 5:50 p.m., Cunningham said.

Cunningham said a 1994 Dodge Neon driven by TERRY R. GUM, 37, of Lynchburg crossed the center line on a curve on westbound East Old Mountain Road.

The Neon crashed head-on into Farmer's 1998 Honda Civic.

Gum and 11-year-old Cody Gum, a passenger in the vehicle, were flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

"It does not appear that alcohol or excessive speed are factors," Cunningham said.

VSP Trooper T.J. Newberry is investigating the crash.

i was matts current girlfreind and she took him from me fast and unexpectally.she deserves to go to jail for murdering him she needs to be charged with unvalughntary man slaughtar or eaither wrongful death. i hate her for takeing him away. she took my truelove away from me and i hate her so much. why in the world would you be reaching down in the floor board with your eyes off the road espically if u never been on it and with your 11 yr old boy in the car. her eyes werent on the rd when it happened. the only reason why matt wasent wering a seatbelt was b/c he wasent speeding. the only times he ever did is if he was speeding or if he seen a cop. plus why was a women from lynchburg in lousia in the fisrt place? lynch burg is far away from there. there are skidmarks all on the rd from him trying to stop but none from her. i find it very odd. but like i said she deserves something more than a wreckles driving ticket.

angie-I'm very sorry for your loss and for Matt's family and friends as well.
None of us will ever know what truly happened, but this is something Ms. Gum will have to live w/the rest of her life, as well as her child. I feel sorry for her son, what a horrific thing to witness and be a part of. It is a miracle they all weren't killed.

You know it seems weird of the whole situation that when Matt's mother, Kathy has persued the commonwealth attorney and there is nothing that he can do for her. so therefor the only ticket Gum gets is reckless driving?? so that means that I could have an accident tomarrow myself and kill someone and only get reckless driving ticket? makes me wonder about the justice here? I am now Kathy's daughter in law, after just marrying her step son and I live only 1.5 miles away from her. My husband and the family are still grieving... and will be for a long time. When we had our wedding on May 24th we did have a candle burning for Matt since he was supposed to be an usher at the wedding. He had intended to get a suit and all and Matt doesnt dress up for just anyone. My husband, Dewey and Matt had a special bond and Dewey will now always miss that. Every man has his own way of grieving and I know Dewey is, just in his own way. I hope there will be some type of conclusion to the justice here, I really do.

I was a VERY close friend of Matts. It is 3 months after the accident and I am still crying over it. Matt did not deserve to be hit. Im glad that Gum and her son were ok but I hate her for killing Matt. She should not just get a wrecklace driving ticket. she should get vehicular manslaughter. She was going about 80mph on a back country road with an 11 year old child in the car. That is also one count of child endangerment. She was not paying attention to the road. If she would have been paying attention, Matt would still be with us. I do blame her for Matts death. I know that she has to live with this for the rest of her life. I feel horrible for her son. Nobody should have to go thru that and witness it. I hope that justice is served for Matt, Kathy (his mom), Jason (his brother) and the rest of his family and friends.

me and matt, we were as close as brother and sister, if not closer. i told him everthing, and he was always there. when id cry, he'd already be on his way. when i was ready to beat someones ass, he'd cool me down. he looked out for me. its hard to find someone like him. he never jugde me and he listened. and now, everything i know and love is all wrong. ive had one person die that was very close to me besides matt, and he was my ex derek. he died not even 3 months later and then i get a call about a week later saying a very close friend on mine has cancer and THEN mom tells me that my uncle either has a blood clot or brain tumor. everything is slowly slipping out of my life. at 15 it too much for me to handle and since matt has gone to a better place everything is down hill. i dont blame him or god, i blame the bitch who murdered him! i hope she feels like shit. it a horrible thing she did, that she prety much got away with. how could anyone live with that? tops off to her. i hope she feels goods. i just hope that thing will slowly get better.. or fastly...
