''It really has nothing to do with the actual product being advertised, ironically, since chewing tobacco is not the most popular product anymore,'' he said.''It is more symbolic of a time gone by.'' So were the signs that said "Whites Only". I think those were definitely symbolic of a time gone by. Should we give those a fresh coat of paint?

Yes, and the signs that said "Coloreds Only" should be painted over too. It's time to end racism in this country. Hopefully, BHO can make progress in this area when he takes office in Jaunary 2009. There are a lot of us to convert.

Skipping past the nonsense of umm's thought process let us return to the Mail Pouch barns. Somewhere in my numerous box of slides form the early 70's I have a picture of the Clinton Barn. I lived in Cleveland at the time and as an aspiring young photographer running up and down the roads of Ohio I spotted the barn. My trusty Nikon caught the moment. Now all these years later I often write of my Rt.66, 20, 30 and other two lane travels and the signs such as Burma Shave, Rock City and the sad white crosses along the highway where motorist juiced up met their demise. Remember the "Just a little bit better" sign that changed as you drove past. I think it was Kellogg's cereal and the eye blinked. It was a wonder that more motorist didn't die trying to read the bill boards. Lady Bird Johnson put the death sentence to most bill boards with the Beautify America Act. She couldn't stop the Vietnam War, but by God, no more Burma Shave signs. Canal Fulton used to have a faded chewing tobacco sign on the huge brick building downtown. I used to bring up the idea to the Historical Society of repainting it. Nobody listened. The tobacco brand wasn't Mail Pouch, but the name I can not recall at this moment. So get the keys to the Rambler Cross Country and let's roll. P.S. Blacks were always allowed in my lifetime so there are no signs lodged in my brain. Sorry ummm. And gee wilickers, no doom and gloom on the front page of the Beacon. I congratulate you.

I'll always have fond memories of barn slogans; not just for the tobacco. I remember seeing advertisements for Coca Cola, Dr. Pepper (10, 2, 4 o'clock), and RC pops, too.

Driving the last 100 miles to Vegas in the 70s there were dozens of signs for Foxy's Casino. That had to set the record for signs per mile. Foxy's Double Odds Craps, Foxy's Corned Beef Sandwiches, Foxy's Liberal Jackpot Slots, and on and on.

As a kid on my way to my great aunt's farm outside of Cadiz, OH I always thought it said "Mail Porch Tobacco" I said it outloud once. My mom set me straight. That was back in the 40"s. That became my favorite. I bought a tee shirt. My husband took a picture of it. He then painted it on a tray for me which I still have and cherish the good memories it brings me. Sad to see them go.

umm wrote: or dying Yes, cause that big ol' evil sign just leaped down off the side of that barn and force fed them smokeless tobacco until they was hooked. I saw the whole thing, Your Honor. Never stood a chance. You make your choices and you live or - yes, sadly - die with them. Too many examples to list here ( see any page of any paper on any day ).
