The only whites oppressing the blacks belong to the democrat party. They need to keep the social programs and money flowing to the blacks so they can maintain their voter base and stay in office. Then after they are elected continue to ignore the core needs of all American citizens by their socialist programs that only benefit them. They have no intention of trying to better the blacks because that would destroy their power. Blacks exchanged the plantation master for the democrat political master. No difference for blacks.

i don't think ALL of the problems in the black community are solved. i am not delusional about anything. post #17 proves this.
so, annually whites make 20 thousand dollars more than blacks as u claim. that's nothing to brag about cretin, considering that both races have been here since 1619 (389 years ago,) one race free to pursue the American Dream, while the other bled, fought, died and scraped to freedom just 40 years ago. you guys had a 349 year head start, and the best u can come up with is 20 thousand dollars? whose being delusional?

That's all we are asking. If you see a white suspect arrested everyone ( white and black) wants them punished to the full extent of the law. If a black suspect is arrested H.G. starts yelling he's a good boy and it all due to white oppression. We are sick of hearing it.

the next president:#1 is going to be a DEMOCRAT,#2 blacks are going to benefit either way. and by that i mean if its OBAMA that speaks for itself, but the flip side is if its HILLARY, there's a little country in AFRICA called LIBERIA that was set up just after EMANCIPATION for the newly freed AFRICANS who wanted to leave this place and go HOME. many wealthy AFRICAN AMERICANS have their sights set on this place and are in the process of pouring money into this goldmine of a country. I have to admit that after looking at the comments on this topic I really am at a loss for words...but I will try to say something.
Let me first start by saying that I know the young man personally that this article was written on. He was a student of mine many years ago.
To put the comments to rest let me assure you that he did experience a very rough childhood in the East End of Newport News and contemplated following his brothers footsteps by dropping out. But he stayed in school and eventually earned his diploma. He joined the navy like the article mentioned, and the next time I saw him (about a year later)he was in uniform speaking to students at the high school about making good choices.
I at first thought it was something the military was making him do, but several years later he's still involved in community affairs.
The last time I spoke with his mother, I was told by her that he worked in the computer field and currently attends school for political science. She stated that his plans are to run for city council in 2010. This young man is not the person some of the comments say he is. He believes everyone- whether black or white- should he be held accountable when they break the law. But he also believes that the best prevention to crime is education. I spoke with him last week when I saw the article, and he said something that blew my mind. He said, the city of Newport News isn't divided by race as it was in the 60's, or gender as it was in the 80's, or even sexual orientation as it was in the 90, he said today we are divided by class.

I congratulate Slater on his sucess, and I wish him every happiness. He sounds like a fine man.

For the most part, Slater has been treated very well by society, the government, government programs, etc..

The treatment he received from his parents, on the other hand, has been poor. It sounds like Dad ran off and mom continued to have babies even after she had more babies than she could afford. What was this woman thinking?

His idea that we are divided by class and not by race certainly rings true. There are black physicians, attorneys, judges, pharmacists, accountants, nurses, professors, business owners, everywhere.

Slater made good choices. I admire him, and I am grateful that he speaks to schoolchildren about the possibilities. His credibility with members of his audiences is probably as good as it gets.

I too have the pleasure of knowing Mr. Slater,and yes he is a fine young man. I met him at a Newport News School board meeting last year, and the first thought that came to my mind wasn't 22 year old. He carries himself very well. Wisdom far beyond his years.

I agree, this city needs a younger person to atleast be apart of some decision making. I've been a resident here since 1983 and decisions rarely include the younger generation. Were kind of out of touch because of it. It's also good to know he believes that if you do the crime you do the time. This young man sounds ready to put some work in, he has my vote already.
