All contract mines and contract employees will be layed off from Alpha. NO CUMBERLAND MINES WILL BE SHUT DOWN IN AUGUST OR IN THE NEAR FUTURE...... find out facts before you spread rumors and by the way, if any of Cumberland operations were to be scaled back the workers would be moved around to other mines not the unemployment line.

I don't "know" for sure but it's mostly steam coal mines being affected, Met coal is selling so ask your husbands what coal they are mining and don't worry yourself, nobody working for Alpha had any idea what the higher ups at the main office see fit to run the company, and to the English major that likes to correct people on there grammar, don't the rest of us don't care and get the Geist!

Met. coal has fallen 50%-80% in price this year so expect met. coal mines to close also. It's a terrible economy right now.

My husband works in met coal and they are doing fine...no layoffs or anything. They just hired some people about a month ago.

Alpha Natural Resources is almost broke. They are now a junk bond company. Alpha may be mining met. coal at the moment but no one is buying it. Tough times are ahead for Alpha! Believe it.

If you follow the market at all than you know that U.S. met. coal prices have fallen beteen 50% and 80% his year. My guess is all US coal producers are losing money right now. China has slipped into a severe recession/depression and have almost compleely stopped buying met. coal today. My guess is Alpha is losing money on every ton of coal they produce and their financial statements prove this. Hence Alpha has become a junk bond company. Alpha, A&G, Humphries/Red River Coal, True Energy, LLC, and probably every coal producer in Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia are basically selling their coal below cost and are basically going bankrupt. I'am giving you people good information. Patriot Coal filed for bankruptcy yesterday. More to come.
