The fact that Mormons, Southern Baptists, and other religious groups were racists proves that they are man-made creations with fallible doctrines. How many of today's doctrines will change to accept the prevailing attitude of society in the future?<quoted text>
You say Brigham had a history of discrimination toward Blacks. Brigham Young certainly did make some unsavory remarks about the black race and denying them the Priesthood but never membership as there were Black members who came west with Brigham Young and worshiped side by side the white members. Mormons at that time were being persecuted and driven from their homes because they did not believe in slavery.
At that time in history all religions used the scriptures in the Bible to justify discrimation against the Blacks and other religions will have to look at their taudry pasts to see just how far they themselves took those beliefs before they can stand in judgement of Brigham Young.
LDS Mormons have never believed in slavery ever yet other Christian religions used the same Bible to justify and promote slavery.
For Anti-Mormons to use a few statements by Brigham Young yet ignore other statements:
Brigham Young did say some positive things about Africans. He said:
"Negroes should be treated like human beings, and not worse than dumb brutes. For their abuse of that race, the whites shall be cursed, unless they repent." (Journal of Discourses 10:111)
"The Lamanites or Indians are just as much the children of our Father and God as we are. So also are the Africans." (Journal of Discourses 11:272)
"Men will be called to Judgment for the way they have treated the Negro." (J.D. 10:250)
Let just look at one example of Reformation Christian and Slavery:
Did you know that in 1845, the Southern Baptists were considered a cult by the Northern Baptists?
By the 1830's tension began to mount between the Northern and Southern Baptists. Baptists in the South were embracing slavery because it was the core of their social and economic order.
Baptists of the North were saying that God would not condone treating one race as superior to another while Southerners said that God intended for races to be separate. In around 1835, the Southern states began complaining that they weren't receiving money for mission work.
Let's put things into perspective. In 1865 over 620,000 Americans died over the slavery issue. Methodists, Baptists, and Presbyterians all fought for the right to own black people. The LDS Church has always been against slavery. Can the Southern Baptist Convention claim the same?
And don’t forget that it was only in the 1990s that many Southern churches asked forgiveness for their segregationist stance.
