How many more rescue squad leaders will be arrested or charged with incompetence? This saga is turning into a pathetic comedy that might be funny if human lives were not at risk at the hands of incompetent and corrupt managers.

WOW what an article. I say fire everyone in charge. Even if they weren't involved directly they either knew about it or should have known about it.
Those days of claiming you didn't know or passing the buck to someone else is over with.
Sexually harassing co-workers and putting drugs in their food and drinks ? That's way more over the line then just stealing money.
I'm sure this kind of behavior is not unique to just Antioch. You can bet other towns have their share of idiots like this guy.
Its time to clean house and investigate EVERY one of these taxpayer paid outfits. We deserve better.

This is a total disgrace for the Town of Antioch. This once very well run Rescue Squad and leaders in being the first Paramedic unit in the state has really gone down hill in the last 10-years. There have been a lot of good men & women who gave thier time to this once fine organization just to see it go down hill by the people that are in charge now. I think it's time for this leadership to hit the road as they have NO CONTROL of their people. I think it's time they become part of the Fire Department where they have rules and regulations in place and two Boards to report to. The people of Antioch deserve much better.

I like the idea of hitting them in the pocket book especially since they are a non profit volunteer force.
Problem with that is if they were ever to not make ends meet they would switch to being funded by taxpayers.

That would wind up costing far more in the long run.
But still the idea has merit. It would show them exactly how we feel about what is going on. It might force them to make the changes they need to make.

How can you seriously say this is a bunch of lies made up by the fire department? This is the result of a criminal investigation. Usually when money is onvolded, there is a trail to follow. Im sure it wasnt just him, Im sure the Chief and Deputy Chief were in on it. Edgell and Wayne were or still are buddies. Id be willing to bet Wayne sold him out to cover his own butt.

While he is innocent until proven guilty, it still doesnt look good for the rescue squad. Public opinion will be swayed by this, and when the contract comes up for discussion in Nov., the village board will have no choice but to pull it. The rescue squad has been receiving so much bad press, that its making Antioch look bad, hopefully the powers that be wont allow it to continue.
There are a lot of lies that are/were fabricated, and the fire dept has added to things. However the squad had him arrested from what i heard, when they learned about the money being stolen.

Heard last night that there is more bad news about ARS coming this week. It's a shame what has happened to this organization.

AFD could NOT be causing all of this. It's self inflicted by ARS management. Anyone who believes otherwise needs to open their eyes.

I hope ARS can survive in some form, but it is clear the current set up is not working and needs to be fixed. They asked for my money and then stole it. I'm pissed and so should everyone else be.

Rather not say in case it is not true. I don't want to "pile on". I hope the problems end and that somehow the volunteers can dig out of the mess we already know about.

As a former member od A.R.S. we were never allowed to know how much money we had in funds, only Wayne and his hand picked board knew, as only the board was allowed to see the votes for Chief and everything else we voted on. I think Wayne, Smouse, DeKind and everybody else that may be on the board now should quit or go join Edgell in a Jail cell someplace as they are all involved! Wayne & Smouse stood up at Edgell's wedding a week or so ago, so he is just covering his own ass!

They stood up at his wedding and then has him arrested? This gets crazier by the minute.

- Don't think for a minute that the embezzlement would have ever seen the light of day were it not for all the current outside scrutiny. It would have all gone under the rug with an internal ARS slap on the wrist and a repayment plan. Never mind that the law was broken.

- The world will not end if ARS ends as an entity. The volunteers could hook on with the AFD if they take over, and a lot of duplicate overhead would go away. It might even operate at lower cost. The village would likely duplicate what ARS already does, including hiring the large number of patient insurance funded paid staff that works weekdays. The idea that suddenly taxpayers will have a burden does not wash when you look thoroughly at how they operate. Its a popular myth spun by those who will say and do anything to protect ARS. AFD could duplicate the processes completely but with competent and properly supervised management, including strict financial oversight and transparency for taxpayers.

This is 100%....correct. Wayne ran that place as he saw fit. The article that just came out saying that the board would be replaced with members of the community is crap. Wayne will pick the people he wants and the people that agree with him. Nothing will change. It was my understanding that Wayne and John were close. I think John just got sold out to cover Waynes ass. What happened to all those millions of dollars ARS was rumored to have? Sure didnt go into buying an ambulance.
I think its time for the public to see whats going on in there, just as they did in Lake Villa. Lake Villa discovered the chief was making over a hundred thousand a year, and working 5 days a month...wonder what we would find
It is my understanding that they were close as well, but it's also my understanding that he is the one who report him and had him arrested. So not sure how he sold him out. The guy had complete access to the organizations money, and we hear more and more of people stealing money from their employers, and this is just another example what money can make you do. The chief at Lake Villa was getting paid way too much on tax payers money, cause that's where their checks come from is every tax payer. The chief at ARS doesn't get paid. And turn the gears for a second and think, would the chief of ARS turn someone in for stealing money if he was guilty as well, and that it is his very close friend? I know if I was in those shoes I sure wouldn't. And I think everyone else can agree with that too. Of course they will say, "well I'll never put myself in that situation" which I totally get, me as well.

I know they have had to ton of crap happen, a lot not positive, but it's an organization that volunteers and they are there to help and not get paid. So that alone is positive. I'm sure they do have a lot of negative things that they are trying to improve over there, but everyone on here talks up a storm and tries to create problems that you have no clue about. People become real brave when a computer monitor and keyboard are in their hands. If you have concerns, why not address with ARS? Why not with the village? Instead the majority of you just yelp on here. Seems a little ridiculous to me. And the million some odd dollars is still in ARS' account. They are a non for profit organization, it's public information to look up what they have in their account. Just ask the girl who is sueing the dept, she asked for the exact amount of that million dollar account down to the cents.

Lies? IDPH investagation is not a lie. Lawsuits are not a lie. Arrest is not a lie.

And if you truely believe that the AFD has the power to initiate an IDPH investigation, get people to file lawsuits and get the APD to make arrests I saw that's a get the job done organization I want managing emergency services in Antioch, not Barney Fife our local real estate agent!

I agree with "Thoughts" Don't let the ARS cry of a increased tax burden fool you.

Auctions and chicken dinners can and will continue, only the money will go to the combined services AFD. It will no longer be embezzeled, spent to settle lawsuits, spent to replace missing and/or in-appropriately used drugs or spent on an outside for-profit ambulance service that provides coverage 40% of the time. Volunteer organization, what a smoke screen, don't you mean ambulance company employees working at ARS on their off days?

Savings on the ambulance contract alone is $250,000 annually...$1,000,000 every 4 years...$2,500,000 every 10 years. Money that stays in Antioch, invested in training and equipment of Antioch Fire & Emergency Services personnel.

The only way to ensure that emergency service operations are brought under the control and leadership of the AFD may be to vote out the village leaders that continue to support them, specifically, Mayor Larry Hansen, Trustee George Sakas and Trustee Mary Dominiak. I hope that they are nothing more than the 3 blind mice and not merely protecting some "personal interests" they may have in keeping the ARS alive.

Sakas does not belong on your list. Scott Pierce does. Sakas gets it and is trying to fix the problem along with the two other trustees thinking clearly.
