The problem is that the commissoners court failed to pass a very minor 1/2 cent tax raise several years ago which would have taken care of the problem as Commissoner Willie Gandara stated on the News Yesterday. Cobos and Haggerty could have sold the sports park years ago when it came up but they wanted to see if the could get a better price or have someone run the park and split the procedes. The city offered 4 years ago to take Ascarate PArk and it was turned down. So I'll pay the $23.00 per year extra. Willie had the guts to vote for the Tax hike knowing that it was unpopular. SO the average home owner will have to give up four or five BIg Macs with large fries or that Starbucks latte? Haven't you heard that we are one of the fattest cities around?

Even if there had been no tax rate increase, our property taxes still go up because the CAD continues to raise property appraisals..

James you are not being entirely honest and neither are the Times Editors! The city offered to take over the parks if the County wiukd cintinue ti oay for them, so what difference does it make if you lose say a million dollars on the parks if you are running them, or if the City is running them.

Editors, City raises taxes 2% kudos for limiting it to only 2% in these difficult times. The County raises taxes 5%(and they are a bunch of scoudrels that are loose with the public's money.

The City Council found nearly 5 million dollars to cut out of the City's budget while the Commissioners chopped nearly 10 million of the County's budget which is much smaller and that is before Willie's Eleventh hour additions.
The Times Editors ought to IMO stop throwing stones particularly at the Commissioner if you can't at least offer area of discussion, not asking you to fix the problem, BUT since you all seem to know so much how about nudging things along with ideas for dicussion.

I don't care for taxes going up anymore than anyone else, but the Times obvious Ooohrah for the City and Pooh pooh for the County grows tiresome.

Finally, I don't think Commissioner Gandara thought through some of his cuts very well and someone needs to mark the tape and bring them up and their consequences when he runs for higher office!

Let's see if this comment stays up long enough for others to read before someone takes it off. The editorial board does not research its facts before they make their comments. Commissioner Haggerty was on the committee that gave the very lucrative contract to the sheriff’s association union – at a tune of an annual compounding 8% increase. Anthony Cobos and Haggerty added un-mandated expense over the years to include 4 new annex buildings, the border children’s mental health department with a new building, a new park in Vinton, and an administrative palace for former sheriff Samaniego on the eastside. Now these two are praised for not making the hard decisions that would fix the mess they got the county in? Cowards is what they are. The editorial board, once again uninformed, does a disservice to this community.
