We are moving to El Paso in late 2010. Our only lament about the decision is the lack of avaliable organic food choices. Currently, we purchase 80% of our groceries from Trader Joes. Reasonable prices, great variety, makes heathy living a viable lifestyle.
Sharon, there is a Sun Harvest in El Paso that for some reason was not mentioned in the article. Their parent store is Whole Foods so apparently the author of the article and whoever they spoke to at Whole Foods are not aware of it. Lots of organic choices and food that is not available in other stores.

As a Hispanic I take issue with the fact that stores like Wal-Mart and Pro Ranch Markets are lumping all Hispanic/Latinos into the "must blare loud music and paint the walls pink" demographic. At least some of the Vista supermarkets aim to civilize the supermarket experience. Of all the retailers they in my opinion have got the right mix at their far east side store. It's clean, modern, vibrant enough to keep you from falling asleep and offer great product offerings.

As for more variety, El Paso has spoken and it's a Wal-Mart kind of town. I cannot believe there is room for at least four more Wal-Mart stores in this area. It's sad that that's what people want. You get what you pay for I guess.

Real "Hispanics" are white (Spaniards).

Few Mexicans are "Hispanic" - most are Indians and mixed Indians.

A true "Hispanic" grocery would have quality breads, cheeses, wines, and seafood...not Busch Lite, tortillas, and tripe!

Why does El Paso Times use 'Hispanic' when the best word to use is clearly 'Mexican'?
Exactly! When's the last time you saw a Spaniard or a Chilean in a Wal Mart in El Paso?

The most ridiculous thing I ever saw was Ramon Renteria tying Hispanidad to liking the Dallas Cowboys. Sheesh! Some people never travel I suppose.

Pro Ranch Market at Yarbrough and I-10 will do good becuase it simply will be easier to get in and out of the parking lot. However that parking lot is way too small, so eventually this will choke its real potential.

If you really think Wal-Mart is inexpensive it is because they change their prices weekly , they follow everyones ads, then go back and change theri prices like 1 or 2 cents cheaper. If you do not take ads check out the regular pricing , it really is not cheaper than other grocery stores. Also the Neighborhoods are more expensive than the super centers, why would they be more expensive if it is the same stores if you check they are 8 to 12 cents more expensive on every item. They are really greedy, but since no one cares soon they will be able to charge whatever they want because there will not be any competition. Be aware of pricing people
Because 90% of the Walmart shoppers are on FOOD Stamps !!

Trader Joe's won't come to El Paso at this time, unless there's a division of $60,000/year officers coming in w/Fort Bliss' BRAC changes. Not enough Mercedes in the parking lots around town. Also, the spaces around town are too big! Trader Joe's business model predicates on having high income in smaller space; therefore, they make more per square foot of available space. They thrive in places like California and D.C. where people don't necessarily have to drive either.

ABQ and S. Fe are exceptions, because they have a significant part of the population that consumes organic/specialty foods. Their openings up there were huge events. Until TJ's perfects the Chico's Taco in the grocers freezer or the area shifts its consumption habits - El Paso won't get one.

And BTW, it's often cheaper than the crappy chains like Albertson's or Wal Mart on many things; however, on the down side, they are heavy on pre-packaged foods that aren't always better for you but are popular among those who haven't time to cook/prepare meals. That's some insight there as to why the chain won't build in EP.

I am so offended by this entire thread as it totally ignores the state of things in our country. How can the Times justify using the term "war" when it comes to grocerias? Hasn't anybody learned at all that this violent rhetoric is what got all those people killed recently? I hardly think that one groceria is going to send a platoon of crack commandos to raid the other so can't we come up with a better term to describe the competition? Our president would be mortified by such a blatant disregard of his instructions to the country.

The Worst Walmart is in the Northeast. This
store brainwashes their employees to get
bonuses. Then once the goal is met they cut
their hours.

Longest lines and I have traveled coast to
coast. They refuse to open registers and
employees are frustrated with a bad attitude.

Worst shopping carts in the city are in the
Northeast. Broken/stuck wheels along with
them being noisy for your shopping experience.

Northeast Walmart is the Worst in the city and
probably the USA. Yet they continue to
outsell the rest in our city.
