It's a little misleading to call this a 25K "seat" venue. There is no intention to place a single chair out in this parking lot. All it is designed to do is to allow people to stand up and drink beer like they do during the downtown festivals.
I can see a need for a concert hall that fills the need between the Haskins Center and the Sun Bowl that will hold twenty five thousand bottoms, but this ain't it.

Quis Draw, why isn't this it?

Like you said, the city needs a venue that will hold in between 15,000-30,000 people.

The city needs something refreshing.

Dumb-dumb Dan Hagerty once again opening his mouth and showing his stupidity, "I hope they have 25,000 people there every night, drinking as much beer as they can at $8 a pop." Yet, commissioners said they don't want to "create a nuisance for those living near the venue."

It is because of the current county commissioners that all county facilities are so screwed up. When you have commissioners spewing stupidities like Hagerty, who can support anything they propose. And to think that their salaries were raised supposedly to attract more intelligent people. Bola de pendejos!

I'm not too sure about an outdoor concert venue, but I do believe something has to be done with that area to generate revenue; the current facility is a piece of crap. The whole county coliseum area has to be demolished and a new, enclosed events venue built. It is an embarassment to go to concerts in that area because the place is so dilapidated.

The stupidity of the whole idea is that they ARE building the venue across the street from senior citizens homes development.

That should keep the police busy with complains of trash, traffic, yelling, and lod music.

Move the senors to a better location with reasonable access to the city and transportation.

I remember the days when metal bands rocked the coliseum. We would visit relatives in the housing projects known back then as the
"del diablo" just west of the coliseum. Yeah it got a little crazy but it was fun! Those kids will be just fine, ENJOY some good tunes!!!!

no worries, after the first show, i'm sure those seniors that will be moving into the new apartments next to the coliseum will be able to get an injunction to stop the outdoor concerts.

i'm sure there won't be a shortage of lawyers willing to take up the cause.

and, any judge in his right mind will understand seniors and rock concerts don't mix.

end of story.

I said, concert hall that will seat 25K. Not a blacktop that radiates the El Paso Sun. This city is too cheap to let loose the money to build it right. I like the central location of the Coliseum, close from anywhere in town. Just raze the whole thing and build it right.

Another waste of county property. Don't get me wrong, Mr. Kennedy has done a great job at trying to keep such an old building from totally collapsing. When does it stop though? Another money pit. You've got Ascarate Park that they can't give away which would be a good location and you got Asarco land that would be another good location. If we want to do this right then don't just make it a balcktop for people to stand on. Why do you think music under the satrs is so great? Because it's not on a parking lot for one thing.

you should change your name to Marv, because that's a Marv-elous idea!!!

why not ascarate/old western playland? plenty of room for parking, concessions.

concerts by the lake, with lots of landscaping. make it nice.

i like it. let's do it!!!

Not sure why people are decrying a venue that would bring the biggest/best traveling shows to a city that is painfully lacking in that department. It doesn't cost the taxpayers a dime and it brings in revenue that would help prevent the county from laying off workers and raising property taxes like everyone's been complaining about, too.

Who cares where it goes, it's either going to intrude on the desert landscape, or piss off some senior citizens in the projects across the street. Fix up the Coliseum, put in the amphitheater and you can have some decent festivals there. Plus the zoo is right across the street so it might actually become some kind of a tourist destination.

Don't hold back on progress in El Paso!!!

Ascarate doesn't have near the infrastructure.
I don't think anyone remembers how difficult it is to get in and out of the that area?

The Coliseum, which seems to me a lot of people haven't been to in years because of the comments, has access to I-10 East or West, US 54, Border Highway, all within 2 blocks.

Part of the reason a facility like this can be built for the price is because it can use the existing facilities dressing rooms, ticketing, equipment, etc.

Try and build something like this at Ascarate and see what it costs, now figure out what it would cost to create the access to the freeways that is at least equal to what the Coliseum has now?
I'm no expert but I bet 3 million would be a drop in the bucket when trying to pay for that.

What upsets me is this is a public housing senior center, you should be glad you have a home! As my dad always told me "beggars can't be choosers!"

To the guy that says the venue won't have seats...how do you know? Everything I have read says seats. Have you been to an amphitheater before? they have seats. its usually a pit area, then seats, then a standing area.

Sure the location sucks and people says it smells but we do need this! i'm tired of going to abq and phoenix for concerts!

You all are both correct. A facility that holds 25,000 concert goers is needed in El Paso, but the location is not prime. I like the idea of using Asacarate Park. One, you have plenty of land to work with; two, it's a central location; 3 a backdrop using the lake would be outstanding; 4, you have built in parking; and 5 the county already owns the land. If you have ever been to Houston and gone to the Woodlands Pavillion, it is an awesome venue for concerts. They draw big names and have actually been rated as one of the highest attendance concert venuews in the country. With EL Paso's great year round weather you could pull it off. This would then give the county revenue to knockdown the Coliseum and turn it into a nice venue for Rodeo's, basketball games, smaller intimate concerts, the circus, etc. It's time for El Paso to dust itself off and start moving forward.

What they do not mention is that the location is between the zoo (the noise levels will cause the animals to become stressed and probably die) and the Delta WASTE water treatment plant and hazardous waste dump. Yes they both SMELL. on the side where they claim they are building the Senior housing is also the truck inspection station for trucks coming from Mexico 24/7 and the fumes from idling diesels is toxic as well as smelly. This is a flood prone area when it rains. There is no parking. The traffic tie-ups there are already bad and will become much worse. You are also only a short hop across the zoo to UMC so all the drunks in the fights and the car wrecks will be close enough to walk or be dragged but the noise will create problems for the patients already there.
Anyone who believes the Haggerty's about this site being used 2 times a year have huge holes in their heads.
Put this obscenity at Asarco because the primary attendees will be college students and Mexicans anyway. And there are not that many residential areas near it to be inconvenienced by idiots too cheap to pay for parking and the noise levels.
I live 4 miles from Cohen and on fireworks nights I can not only see but hear them! and when the wind is right the concerts there also carry all 4 miles.
