That is just awful! Your sister comes to visit you and your dog eats her. You never hear any good stories about pit bulls. It's a shame.

thats not true at all, pit bulls are used as search dogs, in hospitals and there are storys of pitbulls saving there owners lives. i bet atleast 50% of the "pit bulls" that attack people are not american staffordshire terriers or american pit bull terriers. i a pit is no different than any other breed. the fact is that there are more attacks on humans by other breeds than pitbulls. pitbulls were always breed to never bite humans and are the most loyal protecting dog you will find. the are also one of the smartest dogs out there, everybody needs to not be so quick to judge a breed by the actions of some irresponsible dog owners

Not so arron, You are using statistics wrongly, You can go to various websites including the CDC, the Center for Disease Control and you will see the Pit Bull is the #1 breed that inflicts bites on US citizens. Sure, if you add up "ALL OTHER" breeds combined your statement is true. You can also check out websites that keep up with dog bites of the US Postal Service letter carriers. You will find that 3300 postal employees reported dog bites in 2006 and the majority were from Pit Bulls. It goes on to say that 4.7 million people were bit in the US last year and over half were children and guess what was the "leading" breed of bites to humans...get ready... it was Pit Bulls. They didn't talk about what make, part of the world it came from, it was just a Pit Bull. Just Google, Pit Bulls attack humans, or Pit Bulls bites U S Postal Workers and you'll find all the info you want on this subject. I think that owning a pit bull is simply not worth it. Yesterday, 6-29-07, a 52 year old women was visiting her sister in Deltona Beach, Fl. and her sisters Pit Bull killed her. That is a fact. I don't think this womans sister was a threat to her in any way. How are Pit Bulls smart? That wasn't too smart. |

I believe that in this situation in particular, the elderly woman who owned the pit bull lacked the physical strength to make her dog stop attacking the other woman, or to train her dog properly. Pit bulls are really dogs for experienced dog owners who have the ability to handle an extremely muscular and powerful breed of dog. I have a pit bull and in the one instance when he was attacked by the neighbor's dog I had to physically lift him from the ground to get him to release the other dog. There's no way that your average elderly person would be able to do something like that. Pit bulls are just an extremely popular breed when they really shouldn't be. If you look in the county animal shelters at least half the dogs there have some pit bull in them, but these dogs really aren't pets for everyone and a lot of people don't understand that when they adopt them.

Pit bulls depend like most dogs solely on how they are raised and handled. Pit bulls are NOT naturely people aggressive but they were at one time in thier history bred to be dog aggressive for thier use in fighting. They are meant for like Sakura said for experienced owners who have study the breed and know what they are doing. The dogs do NOT have locking jaws as the myth says but again at one time were bred for a high tolernce of pain. So they should never be left left alone much like you wouldnt leave a child alone in the pool. The preference is also that they live in a one dog home and are crated when the owner is not able to give thier full attention to watching thier pet. Pit bulls attacks are like shark attacks... they dont happen offend but when they do they are all over the news. This breed is I agree an overly popular dog. Which is why they bite more people. They are used for fighting, guard purposes, and many times are left alone to offend. They will protect there property if thats what they are raised to do and that can cause people they dont know to get bit. As for postal workers if you own a pit bull they shouldn't left out to chase or bite the post man AND if you have a pit bull you should have your yard properly fenced in yard!!! As for information on Pit Bulls you need to look at allllll the site because 85% of them are from a group of people who hate pit bulls and not from unbaisest sources. Read more then just the pit bull bashing sites and look at the postive ones too.
As for this case everyone needs to look closely at the details people breeze over which are important to this breed. The woman attacked had another dog with her which bring in the dog aggression Was she tring to keep them apart and got caught in the middle?. As well as the sister was visiting.. how well did the dog know her had they been properly introduced and had it gone well in past? Dogs have personality like people and sometimes you just dont like someone for whatever reason which could have happened or the dog could have seen her as a stranger and in protection of its home it attacked her. As for the owner getting bite I'm sure she was bite as an accident during her tring to break up the fight. As for the police that arrived.. they are strangers as well the dog isnt going to listen to them or responde well to thier presence. Did the dog have rabies? This could mean the dog was duranged. Also had the dog ever bit anyone prior if not then why now? why her? Did she hit the dog or provoke it? all questions we wont ever know the anwser too but questions that are important. Never go on just what the media gives you for info they never do all thier home work they just want to give you a half assed story that will get you reading! |

Read this from the News Journal. It will give more details. Pit Bulls are bad news whether they are trained and properly maintained.
http://www.news-journalonline.com/NewsJournal... I know what I am talking about. Thanks |

I will agree for the most part, that we hear a whole lot about pit bull attacks, but if any of you out there have checked the most popular breed of dog, is a pit bull. Even in our local neighborhood here in southeastern Ga, there must be 12-15 running around. THe more population, the more popular the dog, the more you will hear about attacks, i.e.- 20 years ago when dobermans, and rottwilers we at their popular peak, they were the dogs most likely to harm people. I beg to differ with anyone who says that a pit bull can't be controlled, It is not a matter of control, It is a matter of knowing the breed, and handling the dog accordingly. My pit embraces all people, doles out kisses, and craves attention, which he gets. THe worst thing for a pit bull puppy or an adoptable adult pit, is to end up in the hands of an inexpierienced dog owner. My point is that all pits arent bad, but many ignorant owners are. Research the breed, and if you don't feel you can handle the responsibility, please do not get one. But if you don't research a pomeranian either, your liable to end up with chewed up woodwork, and a dead cat or bird. People need to grow up and take responsibility for themselves.

No you don't know what you are talking about. You have a bigotry against a breed of dog that tend to be on the news, because there are so many of them. Inexperienced owners, ignorance on the behalf of the public, and all around stupidity really hurts this stoic, and loyal breed. I am a pit owner of one sweet little guy who cohabitates with his "brother" an older black lab, my bull is crated during the day when I am gone and supervised when I am at home. He embraces everyone who enters my home, and loves even the postman. If you have never owned a bully, you need not be commenting about them.

You are an excellent example of 'irresponsible'. Better research your facts about that breed. I've owned them, I've studied them. I've researched them. They have the strength, the aggression and the power to do exactly what they did to yet another innocent person. |

Kathi, we are speaking of the breed of the dog. The breed is what it is. Doesn't matter how lucky you are with yours. You really think the little old lady thought her dog was mean? I bet she thought her dog 'embraced' everyone too. Problem with Pit Bulls is when they are pissed, they aim to kill and they have the ability to do it. |
You are absolutly wrong...the Pit Bull is NOT the most popular dog. It may be the most popular dog in a run down trailer park but that is about it. The most popular dog is the Lab, both in the US and United Kingdom. This info is based on what the American Kennel Club's wesite says after I Googled it 10 minutes ago. As a matter of fact, there are several websites that also say the Lab is the most popular. Now, I'm not sure why it matters, a Pit Bull is a dangerous dog to own with no apparent value other than to kill it's owners or the owners children and/or their friends when they visit. I've never owned one, but I can read, look and listen. |

Natalie, i agree with you. |

Again, how they are raised is a very important factor. But, they are still animals, with animal instincts. If the upbringing of an animal were the only factor we could all own lions, tigers, bears, etc....I know that's a little extreme...but, get the point?

That is so true. I read an article about the large cats they are having problems with in Britan. Turned loose by their owneres. As regards to this particular attack, the dog was 8 years old and had never been aggressive before. They thought just like many here...'my baby'. The problem is this is one of those breed of dogs who are very, very strong. When a pit attacks, it means to kill. |
well william the GREAT GEEK the pit bull is not a popular dog in a trailer park its a popular dog in tha hood, where you cute little lab will get snapped at.a lab sure will let some break into your house, I can asure you a pit wont. |

I'm trying to understand you, but your writing is not clear. |
I don't own a dog...dogs are not for me...any kind, it doesn't matter. I just tried to supply you with some information that you might find interesting to read... If someone wants to get into your house, they'll just kill your Pit and go in the next day. I might add, based on your post, I'm not sure you have both oars in the water. |
|
Exactly.....The problem with most of the Pit owners here, is that they seem to feel it necessary to defend and or justify this animals reputation...instead of owning up to what it is. This is a naturally agressive dog. That's what makes it so scary. As far as sending them to sites for stats....I think they have "selective reading" skills. |
