I was on the 7th floor of an office building in Falls Church, thought I heard a thunderclap, and went to the windows. There were other office workers looking out at the blue skies wondering what it could be. Myself and a co-worker went to the USGS web site but did not see anything yet posted. I did find that a real-time seismograph in Corbin, VA (about 50-60 miles south of Falls Church) connected to the Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory showed a minor tremor at 1:30:45 PM EDT. A little math later demonstrated that the wave propagated at around 3 miles per second.

I live at Baileys Crossroads and I felt it for almost 5 seconds. 3 of my neighbors came out and stood around wondering what it was because no plains were flying over and no trucks were anywhere nearby.

I felt it in McLean. The whole house was shaking accompanied by a rumbling sound. The glass objects on the shelves made tinkling noises. Thought maybe A.F. jets were doing a fly-over and there was a sonic boom, but the earthquake explanation makes more sense.

Why no mention of the most recent quake prior to this one back in 2003?
For some reason, these quakes are never felt in Reston, at least not North of the Toll Road. During the last quake, and this one, I never felt it, neither did anyone else who was either living or working in the same part of town. Yet folks in Great Falls and McLean felt it, and some had their rooms actually shake around in other parts of Fairfax Co. I wonder what the difference is in Bedrock Composition between these two locations? |

Because most of the people on here are morons. More than likely no one on here felt it. They just want to sound like they were part of something because their lives are small and meaningless. |

About 15 minutes before the quake, 2 large snakes emerged from the ground in my neighbor's yard in the West Springfield/Burke area (it is well documented that wildlife can sense earth vibrations before humans) then at 1:29 PM I heard a loud booming noise like thunder and the house shook for 2-3 seconds. A folding door in my kitchen was knocked loose from its bearing.

The only morons Virginians have encountered are from Texas. You are a Tex-Ass.

I heard and felt it here in Dale City. At first, I thought they were doing blasting at Quantico but it was louder than normal and lasted longer.

While stationed in Adak, Alaska, we experienced earthquakes almost daily. Some were quite small but others would walk the furniture across the floor. At first it was very scary but after a while it became a normal event - except for the very largest ones.

I live near Lee District Park in Alexandria. I heard a big protracted BOOM (like thunder or a sonic boom) and my house shook for several seconds--may 5-10 seconds. I thought it was a truck hitting something, but when I went outside all was quiet. I've never experienced this type of thing before, and I have two questions: 1. Why is there a boom? 2. If we look around Annandale, are we going to find a big hole or crack or something?

I was in my basement and felt the ground shake and a loud rumble for a few seconds. I live near Lake Barcroft in Falls Church.

I was working in the basement of my home office in Burke, VA when the "micro" earthquake occurred. It shook the house and sounded like a snow plow truck coming down the street. It definitely got my attention, and I went upstairs and outside to investigate. The weather was clear and sunny, and a beautiful day and I just dismissed it as some sore of nearby construction blasting or something. It is not until today, that I have read the confirmed reports from the USGS of the confirmed quake.

The earthquake is very surprising because this kind of seismic activity happens at a fault line where the tectonic plates are manipulated by carbon compounds reacting with ammonium nitrate beneath the surface. Like a vulcano, certain helium bonds react with oxygen to create a plume that gives way to an eruption. The earth's axis may be tilted a little bit because of certain gasses in the earth's crust. |

Are you serious???? "Helium bonds reacting with oxygen"???? Wow, another moron on here that certainly didn't pass his high school chemistry or earth science classes. |

Oh my god!! You f**king americans are so dramatic and traumatized! 1.8 earthquake and you make such a big deal! Ive felt a lot of earthquakes of more than 3 and its more than ok. I felt one of 7 points, and that was indeed a big deal.
Hope US changes, they need real people! GO OBAMA |
