If you are a taxpayer in the Shawnee Community College district and you’re not outraged, then you are probably unaware. Shawnee College is one of three community colleges in the state of Illinois on the verge of bankruptcy. The SCC administration blames it all on the state and past SCC administrations. In reality SCC was in stable financial shape until Larry Peterson became president. Some of the accomplishments of the Peterson presidency include-
- Got the SCC school board to increases the “presidential purchase authority” from $10, 000 to $25, 000. This means the president doesn’t even have to check with the SCC board to spend $25, 000. Why would the board approve this?
- Hired Peterson’s friend , Shannon Woodward, as “Marketing and Public relations consultant to the president” for $55,000 per year , plus $1000 a month (another $12,000) for auto expenses. Mr. Woodward had no college degree of any kind. SCC is in the business of trying to tell young people they will be more employable with a degree from SCC. What message did this send?
- Hired Guy Alongi as a presidential consultant for housing. Salary $37,200. At the time Mr. Alongi was Chairman of the Illinois Community College Board. The ICCB is allegedly an oversight organization for community colleges in Illinois. Could any sensible person not see this as a conflict of interest and questionable ethically?
- Fired Jeff Wiggs as Shawnee college Foundation director. Mr. Wiggs’ salary was approximately $40,000. Replaced him with Greg Legan as foundation director and raised the pay to $80,000.
- Dean Richard Massey was put on “administrative leave” in early 2008 and never returned to work at SCC. He moved back to Texas. He had approximately another 1 ½ years on his contract. Salary $104,220. He was paid the entire time. At that same time hired Carolyn Kindele to do the job Massey had vacated. Salary $70,000.
- Hired Law enforcement teacher Paul Echols with a special $28,000 stipend (out of the education fund) in addition to his salary. This will make Mr. Echols, in 2012, the teacher with the least seniority, but the highest salary at SCC.
- Replacing the part time position of Metro center director, currently occupied by Sally West, with a Full-time position of metro center director/special assistant to the president. Vicky Artyman is being appointed to this new full time administrative position just after teaching positions have been cut. What benefits SCC’s students most, more teachers or more administrators?
- Hired J.P. Barrington as a presidential consultant for a salary of $81,740.
- Hired Terry Nunn as a presidential consultant for a salary of $37,200.
- Fired 11 staff members in 2010.
- Fired 4 teachers in 2011.
All the above is a matter of public record. This is just a partial list of all Dr Peterson’s “accomplishments”. He could have never managed all this if not for a rubber stamp vote from 4 of SCC’s 7 board members. Manul Goins, currently running for re-election, is one of Peterson’s “Rubber Stamp 4”. Ron Fulenweider was asked specifically by Dr. Peterson to run for the SCC board. Please help save SCC by voting AGAINST these two candidates.

You left out the private party's President Peterson held at his house in Goreville. These Catered party's according to my sources included all the ALCOHOL you could drink paid for by SCC. Then out of nowhere the college ran food service is closed. The caterer Connie's then got a no bid contract to run the food service at SCC. How can the college give out a no bid contract for thousands of dollars. I guess anything is possible at SCC. I think the public need to know tax money is being used for parties by President Larry Peterson of Shawnee College. Manual Goins, Scott Farmer, Richard Trampe, Wesley Wright, you are as much responsible as Peterson!

College president Larry Peterson names the Shawnee college gym after EDDIE SMITH. Eddie Smith then used his Union Money to support Peterson's candidates. If the public only knew what all was going on at Shawnee college! http://www.elections.state.il.us/CampaignDisc...
You good ole labors union money at work! Vote PATTON & MOORE, please ... for the future of YOUR community college.

It looks like if the voters don't make a change today, the college may go under. I feel that public should have somewhere they could be kept informed of the Board actions. I guess what happens at Shawnee college stays at Shawnee college.

That's ridiculous. No wonder why so many scholarships have been cut. The music program went from a flourishing program to a almost dying one when the scholarships were cut to only a fraction of what they were before. Just ridiculous. Let's not forget the internet cut either. With the internet and computers the way they are it is hard to do any educational research of any kind. And please don't forget the retard Tim bellamy. It's hard to start what he's screwed up

Wow! This makes a lot of sense with the way SCC is run. I am currently a student at SCC and can testify to the decline in the environment. The education from the instructors is the only reason that I am still going to this community college. The instructors here are some of best, yet remain underpaid, while the administration appears to be completely overpaid and seem to have no concern for the students. Due to this uneven balance, even we, the students, are suffering from it by the hike in tuition and lack of once flourishing scholarships. Also, as someone mentioned above, the internet is not worth having. You can barely get on an educational research website with the internet provided. I have a better shot at researching things with my phone than to you the internet that Shawnee provides. It's sickening really.
Today, I plan on going out to cast my vote on behalf of my peers, myself, and the future students to come. I encourage you all to do so as well.

P.S. Shannon Woodworth is the guy's name. Not Shannon Woodward.

I find it interesting that you post your so-called "facts" but won't tell your real names. How BRAVE you are to "speak up" from your fake names/nicknames on the internet while putting your own spin on what you describe as fact. This whole thread is pathetic.

I am sad that there is a forum where people can publically slander others. Here are a facts...not gossip -
Fact 1: 4 faculty were not fired in 2011. 3 were RIFFED (Reduction in Force, look it up.) 1 did not meet his required educational agreements so he cannot continue as a full-time instructor. Note: Last year NO faculty were laid off when many Community Colleges around the state were laying off faculty. Thank you Dr. Peterson, administration and board members for being considerate of our students and trying to keep the faculty numbers strong.
Fact 2: Eddie Smith, proud alumni of SCC, has been overly generous with his own funds to his hometown community college. He has donated THOUSANDS of dollars towards scholarships and improvement efforts at SCC every year. This is the thanks the Smith family gets for their generosity? THANK YOU Eddie Smith and family on behalf of the students at SCC who greatly benefit from your generosity.
Fact 3: What happens at Shawnee is available to any commnunity member. Records are public and available. Get involved and attend board meetings. Be intelligent enough to ask appropriate questions and do research. SCC is a public institution with public records. Thank you to the staff who work so diligently to keep these records and have cooperated with anyone who wishes to view them. Your integrity is honorable.
Fact 4: Paul Echols is being paid an instructor salary - with a stipend for extra duties. He is not the only instructor who gets paid an extra stipend to do extra work. He is an amazing instructor and SCC students are reaping the rewards of having such a quality instructor with the amazing experience he has acquired. If you are wondering what his experience is, read his newly released book that, by the way, he is donating all profits to the victim's families. You have got alot of nerve to knock such a stand-up guy. He is a nationally known resource in the area of criminal justice who drives an hour each way daily to share his experience with our students. He has a heart for SCC and is also a proud alumni giving back. I don't see that as a crime. Thank you Paul Echols.
Fact 5: The State of IL is in terrible financial shape. You must live under a rock if you aren't aware that all institutions are waiting on payments from the state in order to make payroll and operate. Everyone must sacrifice a bit in order for this fine institution to maintain it's important role in our community. If the internet is a bit slow...that seems like such a small sacrifice all could make in order for the doors to stay open. Thank you for your patience while SCC is waiting on payments from the State.
Fact 6: This is the last time I am viewing this forum. It is a waste of my time to read gossip. Get informed, be involved and stand up for what is right. Gossip is not right, it is a reflection of your poor character. Thank you to those who choose to discontinue viewing Topix.

Ok, first off, a lot of these statements are not lies or pieces of juicy gossip God knows that good ole' Southern IL loves. Whether or not faculty members were fired, I do not know. All I know is that good teachers are underpaid, educational resources such as speedy internet for attaining educational materials are not available, and scholarships are running low. Computer labs are meant for students who either a) do not have a computer or b) do not have the internet at home. This is a way for them to get the sources and information required for certain classes such as English 112. Many of the teachers require that you use sites only available at the library, but without speedy internet and a lot of people on the already slow system, it's quite hard to get what you need.
Also, while we are grateful for those who donate money for scholarships (and believe me, we are!), they are still dying off in certain areas that need them so badly. A lot of my friends would not be able to even go to this college had it not been for a scholarship and scholarships are being discontinued left and right.
I know that we live in rough economic times. Heck, our state is easily one of the most corrupt and bankrupt states in this entire country. I'm just saying, I think that a lot more could be done to help the students and the instructors. To me, it's quite interesting that out of all the community colleges in IL, SCC is one out of three that is on the verge of bankruptcy. It does make you wonder. I'm not here to judge people, I just think that some things really need to improve and if Dr. Peterson wants to help in that, it would be great!

By the way, "Gossip or Facts," if you're so interested in people revealing their names, why don't you reveal yours? I revealed my first name, but you are totally anonymous. Interesting, isn't it?

I'm still amazed by the fact that anybody would stand up for the poor excuse of a leader Larry Peterson. I was working Trio day and watched as he walked in a tad early for his introductory speech. Then IMMEDIATELY afterwards he leaves as he cannot wait to get out of the college. Sounds a bit undedicated to me. I understand it was a Saturday and nobody wants to be at work on a Saturday morning. But come on here, it's his institution; you would think he would be there to support for more than hour. In response to the all-knowledgeable "gossip or fact" I guess you must be of older age. The reason I guess this is because you do not understand the importance of efficient internet service. An institution like SCC should be well equipped with internet ready to meet the needs of the massive amount of students SCC has enrolled. There are a lot of sights that are required for research that do take up a large amount of data. On a slow internet connection this can take a very long time. When you may have only 30 minutes before classes or limited time on the campus that is very crippling to your research. A lot of people that go to college and work jobs can't afford internet or computers. Therefore their only means of internet is through the college. If the college is failing to meet the needs of the students then that is a problem. A problem worth addressing. As far as validity goes with this thread. It sounds just about right. I know Illinois is tanking in the economy. But it cannot possibly be that bad. I mean come on.

Looks like Paul Echols found topix. Blow some more smoke up Petersons Butt. Maybe somebody can solve another crime, Paul will be glad to take the credit. Paul was handed all the information by the State Crime lab and acts like he did it all.

Miki Beth Colson- It's easy to be sanctimonious when you're not in the situation. When you were a student at SCC you were well known and well liked among the faculty. A lot has changed since you were here. I would ask you to contact any three faculty members, who you respect, and ask about the situation. Sincerely, Tony Gerard

Tony, I am well informed about the situation and have kept in contact with several at SCC who I RESPECT, and am well aware of the state of the college.
As I recall, there were several on the faculty who weren't big fans of Dr. Choate when I was a student there-- they just didn't have a "topix" website to post in.:) Certain people are always going to be unhappy, no matter who is in charge.

Most people didnt even know SCC existed until Dr Peterson became president, he has promoted SCC thru SIU-C, WHATS WRONG WITH THAT?, seems logical to me, SIU bigwigs attend a reception at Dr Petersons home? and thats an issue? Seriously?...what about the extension center (fitness center) in Anna? It is awesome!...my wife teaches in Union Co. and the faculty she works with have nothing but great things to say about the improvements...not to mention the increase in dual credit courses (btw translates to $$$$$)district wide. If SCC is on the verge of bankruptcy, is it due to its location. The majority of the people I have met in the extreme southern part of the state our good christian people...SCC is located in God's country but unfortunatley oak trees, swamps and whitetail deer do not pay taxes...instead of all the negative publicity why not be "thankful" you have a job (or can attend school)and join together for the common good...thanks to the great state of illinois...we are all about to go under...please tell me what business is flourishing during these extremely difficult economic times...?

Great state of Illinois? You must be talking about another Illinois I don't know about. Besides scc is going under due to lack of good administration.

No, there's nothing wrong with promoting the school. It is a problem, however, when you're using tax dollars meant to go toward education and using it to fund an unlimited liquor bar. Dr. Peterson has done a few good things for the college, having said that, the good does not outweigh the bad. What good is it to promote a school that is going under due to a lack of good judgement in managing the school's budget? What good is it to promote a school when the teachers are underpaid? The location does play a part on it. We don't have a lot of high paying jobs in pulaski, johnson, and union county unless you work for the government or state. So the tuition raises hurt our economy because that equals more taxes. Taxes that should be spent to further an individual's education and to fund the teacher for their huge part in that.
And it's true that a lot of businesses are not flourishing right now, but you don't see them blowing "their" money on things that are not necessary. It's just common sense to make a budget, fund the necessary items needed for a good educational facility, use some of it for the benefit of the college and not the administration, and save the rest.

Also, why don't you address the face of the hiring of the people like Alongi and Barrington. These are simple John A. Logan tactics that he borught along with him to Shawnee. He is hiring friends and family the same as JALC has been doing for years.
