These con artists from the chicago unions are robbing the state blind. These thugs know the state is broke and want to keep getting overpaid people more pay. This is why unions need to go away.

Do you guys realize that without unions, you never would have had vacation or sick days or a 40hr work week. Besides all the things that unions have done for the working people, the reason they are trying to make us take a pay cut and less benefits, is because they spent all of the pension money that we (not them) have paid in over the years. Making us work for less is how they plan to pay us back, does this seem fair to any of you? My stepdad is a retired teacher, and even he is looking at losing his pension and having to go back to work. Seem fair to you? Also this does not just affect people that work at the state hospitals and prisons, it also affects police officers, teachers, DCFS, and all other important state jobs!

Yes unions helped with child labor and 40 hour work week but why are they needed today for public sector workers? Besides bankrupting states and making their members feel like they should be paid more than they should...

The problem in Illinois is that the unions negotiate on the same side of the table as politicians, and the taxpayer has no say and gets screwed with increased taxes and fees.., how fair is it that the ones funding the salaries have no say? Time for a change in Illinois...and nobody wants anyone to lose their job. Today it seems like its a game of hungry hungry hippos, greedy people trying to get whatever money's left in Illinois without a care for what the future holds or how much debt the kids will have pay back.

Well thanks for your false concern, but my stepdad is 67 and yes he did retire two years early, but he also paid in extra during his last 5 years teaching to be able to do that. But hey your just another person who thinks they know what they are talking about!

We have given up our raises for the last three years and have offered to do that again, but no they want to take even more away from us. They would like us to go down to minimum wage, when if they would just hire enough people and stop paying time and half to half the people on every shift, they could save a lot of money. Also I do believe state employees pay taxes also, and if you want to complain about someone then why not the Illnois government who all just gave themselves raises. But I guess if they keep the people fighting amongst themselves then they will never have to worry about being held accountable!

I would complain about the politicians, which I do, but how did those politicians get in office? AFSCME of course!!! AFSCME endorsed Quinn and got him elected. State workers union dues made a big portion of Quinn's campaign funds.. Face/palm!

Also do you guys really think that the state of Illinois, if they take our pay and benefits away, are going lower your taxes or budget their money more wisely than they have in the past? I mean come on you guys aren't really that naive, are you?

Nothing against public workers, I have family that are, current and retired, but they do not really pay state income taxes. On paper they do, but actually their salary is derived from the taxation of those in the private sector. Say a teacher is paid 2,000 out of the public tax purse, and is taxed 600, so they end up with a 1400 check...they are not adding 600 to the public purse they are really taking 1400 out of the public purse. Get it?

For one I pay at least a $1000 into taxes out of every check, because of all the overtime I have to work, secondly not all your taxes go to our pay either, and last but not least state employees also pay in their fair share of sales tax. Not to mention all the hours we put in away from our family's, its not like we are just sitting on our butts and getting money for nothing!

So basically what I'm hearing is that the state screwed up royaly, but its the state workers that should be punished for it. You guys realize that most of us will not work in the dangerous position we work in for minimum wage, which means people will be losing their jobs and the state will still be paying us in the form of unemployment. Also there is the fact that we work with very dangerous individuals, most of whom will be shoved into a community setting where they will again attack someone. But this time there will be no state facility to put them in, so instead they will go to prison where it will cost the state even more to house them then it does now.

Wisconsin put the public union in check and didn't lay off a single employee. Remember that. If you work for the state you should be paid well when the state is doing good, but be willing to share the sacrifice when the state is doing horrible, not demand raises with money the state doesn't have. That's called GREED. There's college grads looking for work that would love to do the dirty work state workers do to get that kind of pay.
