What were the names of the 2 coffee shops that all the kids went to in a.m. while skipping first period at Lowell High?? I can't seem to think of it but I can picture the table I would sit at. One was at towards the end of Middle St. and the other was across and to the right of it. Any ideas?? I hope it comes to me or else it tells me I've got some memory issues already! LOL just thought of one and it was Palmer's

It's not off topix, you have to understand there are a couple people that have infiltrated Topix and their sole purpose is to cause disruption and ruin a good thing with their childish ways, so just ignore them.

I did my best to answer your questions.

Florida Retiree. I'm back here now. I confess, I'm the childish one. I don't understand that Topix is public. People who post here are not "infiltrating". They're posting to a public forum. My boyfriend, sla, the monkey, and I like to have our trysts on this public forum and tried to ban other posters. This is the payback we deserve. Still, ha ha ha ha ha ha, I'll never learn my lesson. I think I'm in charge around here.

OMG the B.C. resturant. when I was a boy of 14 in the 50s I worked there. I would scrub floors, carry up coal from the dirty cellar and washed dishes in what was even then a very old washing machine. I also did some short order cooking and worked the fountain. Two old Greek brothers owned it and there sister did the bookeeping. I was paid 85 cents an hour. After my first 2 weeks they would not pay me and told me they don't pay for trainees, but my mother came down and put them in there place. They shared one bedroom with a single bare light bulb on the ceiling. After working all there lives and putting a nephew through college, they went back to grease where I was told them both died within a few months. They never enjoyed life I guess. Later it was sold to to more greek brothers Connie and George. They were just as cheap lol. I remember Connie had big ugly bumps on his bald head. Every day I would see the same customers come in. A bum as they were called would come in and order a cup of coffee and a jelly donut and scoff it down. Next door was a Jeweler with only one leg. He would come in on crutches and somehow would swing himself up on to a stool at the counter. Pretty aw sum I thought.
I guess the b.c. no longer exist. anyone else want to share stories.

Hello Everyon.

The Eupicure Resturant was owned by the Georges and Demongnes families. They purchased the resturant when they returned from serving our country in WWII. Eli Demongens and George Georges were bartender in the Nectar Lounge, Bill Georges and Peter Demongnes managed the front register. John Georges managed the front counter and Louis Georges managed the kitchen. The resturant was a Lowell Landmark for many years. The quote over the front door was " Though these portals pass some of the most beautiful woman in the world" my cousin still has the sign.

Yo & Stin iy su! MaryAnn...as best as my memory bank of the '50s remembers, "Through these portals...etc" was (also?) painted on the archway into the "darkened" adult 'lounge'/more adult dining area toward the back which had a blue/red moitif per indirect lighting. In any event, The Ep was one of The alternate after-school place to go/be seen/hook up (altho the latter was not a term at the time) besides Brigham's, the Dutch Tea Room, or maybe BC. The poor Triangle across the street was always so forlorn and Chelmsford's Skip's was a bit out of the way except for after Friday night record hops or cheek-to-cheeking to Big Band Sounds at the Commodore! So Sad...with the recent passing of Skip's, may they all RIP!(:-(

Eli has passed on and George Georges is living in assisted living, Chelmsford. The original owners were another Georges family, not related to Eli and George. They were actually related to Peter Georges, Dunstable. Lot of history at that place.

Mary Ann ; I was so happy to see a correct post ! My Uncle Bill Georges was part of this family and I was often told of the sign over the portals. I am happy to hear it still exists .

Were their names Jimmy and Stewart? I think the B.C. stopped operating in the mid 1960's. As I was born in 1972, I wasn't around then. I believe they were my grandfathers brothers. Sorry to hear of your troubles there and I'm glad your mother set them straight.
