Dispute among friends led to shooting of pregnant woman
#1 Sep 12, 2006
I just attended the funeral for Amber today! This is one of the most horrific things I ever heard of. I don't care if the arguement was heated. I want to state thate we had a girl whom was pregnant and didn't have a weapon. I also want to say there wasn't even any physical contact between the two, so how in the world did "using self-defense" get in the mix! I think about the baby fighting for her life, and the little 2 year old named Hunter who are left with out a mother! Who is going to "defend" them? This party girl should have a whole lot to think about while she is sitting in jail!

Pam I think you are exactly right i did not no Amber but i live in SC. an it makes me mad to think that Cynthia would get out of jail. She shot Amber an to my opinion she meant to kill the baby . She is a danger to society an no mother should feel safe with her around there children . Bless Amber an may she rest in peace

Beth Amber ,was my neice, and she hadn't even lived a quarter of her life! How can Bond's mother say she didn't think she set out to shoot a pregnant mother! My family is still in shock about this tragic story! Haily is not doing well, but still fighting to live! Kathy (my sister) and Frank have always treated Amber like daddy's little girl. I see their pain, but can't imagine how they feel on the inside! Beth thank you for your comment!

I am in shock,and sad,very sad...
I am Cynthia's last boyfriend before, she left me/Maryland for Justin bond in S.C.
Cyndi would never kill amber, or a fly for that matter, unless her life was in danger.
I dated her for 5 years, much longer than anyone, even her current bf.I know her.
I also knew amber. She was a party girl as well, same story as cyndi.I grew up with these people,I know they needed drugs to stay sane,I used to be the same type of person.I am a mature, grown, god loving, hard working man now & I am very sad that she was with a guy who was growing 20 plants of marijuana,& had a gun.She is the type to avoid conflicts, that's why she left them at the pawn shop I'm sure!
Every fight, argument,or small tiff we ever got in,she would run away from, because she hated conflict more than anything!I also know that she loved her buddy amber for years, and would never kill her unless her life was threatened!
I will miss amber and her tallented music making skills,we we're in a band for a bit in H.S.
She was a fun, happy, life loving individual.
Cyndi was an energetic, hardworking, fun, swee theart & I can't amagine what happened that made her have a gun in her hand at all durring this conflict.
All I know is if she was out muscled by amber & amber's b/f,while cyndi's b/f wasn't there, maybe she picked up the gun to scare them out of the house?Maybe there was a fight for the gun??I wasn't there,I can only speculate...If anyone has more details, please keep me up to date.
my email is :
I love both people involved and think this is a huge mistake, and hope that amber makes it to heaven
because she was such a sweetheart.
My deepest regaurds go out to both famillies.
You all have my prayers, and peace be with you!

I can't believe it either! I think if I was in fear for my life after being pissed off and leaving the 2 at the pawnshop, I would have called the police when I thought I was going to be attacked! What was Ms. marchbanks in fear of? Was it the police seeing all the drugs she was hiding? Amber and her precious baby Hailey had a toxology report and Neither one of them had drugs in their body! Amber's baby didn't have a say so if she wanted to be born to early or die to early! Ms. marchbanks did have a say, and that is dial 911!Oh and lets not forget Ambers 2 year old. Who is going to tell him that his mother was shot in the face all over a scatch on a used car! You are saying the drugs in the house were Ms. Marchbanks boyfriend hmmmmmmmmmm now lets see what is that little wise tale about 9 tenths of the law! You say you turned your life around, that is great!Amber was doing the same thing! I see that you are a friend of both........hmmmmmmmm I didn't see you at the funeral to pay your respects. Well you might have a second chance because Hailey is not responding to meds and is getting ready to depart this world in which its ok to pick up a gun instead of a phone! I really am amazed as how Ms. Marchbanks stewing about her car being scrathed, then she went home and stewed some more and called her boyfriend the loading her gun hmmmmmmmmmm it seems to me that she was thinking about what she was going to do next, Now to me that seems like pre-medatated murder.

Ohh and by the way, I am the same Pam in the other opinions. I don't know why it's show other states under my name!

HELLO THERE ,
MY NAME IS DEBBIE
I AM A AUNT OF AMBER ROBEY & JUST WANT TO SAY A LITTLE SOMETHING ABOUT MY 22 YR OLD NIECE,
AMBER A SWEET GIRL WHO SHOULD OF HAD A WHOLE LIFE AHEAD OF HER AND A LIFE THAT SHOULD OF BEEN WITH HER MOM, HER DAD , BROTHER & HER CHILDREN . WHICH WILL NEVER KNOW OR SEE THERE MOM AGAIN A LITTLE BOY NAMED HUNTER & A LITTLE GIRL NAMED HAILEY,
THAT WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT ITS LIKE TO HAVE A MOM & NEVER FEEL THE HEART FELT JOY OF HAVING A PERSON TO TALK TO OR CRY TO OR SOME ONE TO HUG & KISS & HOLD.. OR SHARE A THOUGHT WITH...TO FEEL THAT "SPECIAL LOVE"
AS THE LAST FEW DAYS THAT HAVE PAST .
BEING AROUND A CLOSE & VERY VERY LOVING FAMILY HURTS TO KNOW THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN FOR THEM 2 KIDS.
TO FEEL THIS.LOVE OF THERE MOTHER.
I HAVE READ THE STORIES & HAVE FELT THERE WAS A SIDE THAT SHOULD BE HEARD OF THE WAY IT FEELS TO HEAR THESE ARTICLES & NOT TO HAVE THE SIDE OF A 6 MO PREGNATE GIRL THAT WENT TO THAT AREA ON A SUGGESTION OF A FRIEND .WHOM AMBER PROBABLY WOULD OF TRUSTED TILL THE END OF TIME. & FELT SAFE TO BE WITH...
THAT SHE PROBABLY NEVER FELT A THREAT, TILL THAT TERRIBLE DAY.
WHY WOULD A 6 MONTH PREGENANT GIRL JUST 22 YRS OLD BE A THREAT OR WANT TO HARM ANY ONE?
WHEN SHE WAS JUST WITH A FRIEND ?
WHY WOULD SOMETHING SUCH AS A DENT ON A CAR & AN ARGUMENT CREATE SUCH A RAGE AS TO SHOOT A PERSON WITH A CHILD.IN THE FACE!!
KNOWING HER AS SHE HAD SINCE EARLY CHIDHOOD. WHAT I WOULD LIKE FOR PEOPLE TO REALIZE IS THAT AMBER WAS LEFT AT THE PAWN SHOP AND HAD TO WALK HOME THAT IS 15 TO 20 MINUTES THAT IT TOOK FOR HER TO WALK BACK TO THE HOUSE. IF SOMEONE WAS SO TERRIFIED FOR HER LIFE WHY DID SHE NOT CALL THE POLICE AND TELL THEM THAT SHE WAS SCARED FOR HER LIFE AND ASK FOR ASSISTANCE SHE INSTEAD CHOSE TO STAY THERE AND WAIT FOR AMBER TO RETURN SO THAT SHE COULD ARGUE WITH HER MORE UNITL THINGS GOT SO OUT OF CONTROL THAT A LIFE...MAYBE TWO HAS BEEN LOST.
SELF DEFENSE?..TO DEFEND ..THATS AMAZING HOW THOSE WORDS CAN MAKE ME CRINGE OF THE THOUGHT OF AMBER TO BE A THREAT..
I WOULD LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT AMBERS BROTHER FOR THE LAST FEW YRS HAS FOR HIS COUNTRY DEFENDED A LOT OF PEOPLE .
AND IS HEADING BACK FOR THE 3RD TIME TO IRAQ...THIS WINTER.
BUT WHO CAME HOME TO TAKE CARE OF HIS LITTLE SISTER & HELP EASE THE PAIN HIS MOM & DAD HAD TO SUFFER. FROM THIS SENSLESS TRADEGY OF A 22 YR OLD YOUNG PREGANANT MOM TO BE.
SHOT IN THE FACE..& TO HAVE HER SPINE SHATTERED ..TO KNOW HER LITTLE BODY HIT THE COLD CONCRETE ..WHEN SHE WAS SO HAPPY TO BE GOING HOME.AT 6PM THAT SAME DEADLY DAY!
..WHY THE NEIGHBORS WHO DESCRIBED AMBERS BEST FRIEND AS A SWEET GIRL WHO WOULD DO NO HARM..BUT TAKE THE LIKE OF MY NEICE..MY SISTERS CHILD & A BABY THAT AS TODAY IS FIGHTING FOR HER LIFE!!
MY NEICE ..A MOTHER OF TWO WHO WILL NEVER SHARE HER KIDS LIFE.
IT MAKES ME ACHE WITH PAIN OF THE VERY THOUGHT OF THIS,
& MAKE ME SHIVER AT THE THOUGHT OF THIS & HOW COULD SOMEONE FEEL SO THREATEND TO DO SUCH A RANDOM ACT OF VOLIENCE TO HER GOOD FRIEND?
WHOM I HEARD WAS CLOSE TO SISTERS AS ONE COULD BE?
AMBER LOVED HER FAMILY FREINDS & HER MUSIC & SHE HAD SOME VERY GOOD DREAMS SHE WISHED TO ACCOMPLISH.
IF SHE HAD ONLY A CHANCE TO LIVE..
SHE COULD PLAY JUST ABOUT ANY INSTRUMENT & LOVED MUSIC.
SHE COULD COULD MAKE YOU LAUGH & SHE COULD MAKE YOU CRY..
BUT SHE COULD NEVER MAKE YOU SO SCARED OR FEEL THREATENED IN ANY WAY.
JUST A SAD UNFAIR WASTE OF LIFE!
THAT EVERY DAY SO FAR..THERES STILL THE PAIN I FEEL IN MY HEART
SO I JUST CAN NOT IMAGINE HER MOM , DADS & BROTHERS PAIN THERE FEELING BUT WANTED EVERY ONE TO KNOW AMBER WAS NEVER A EVIL PERSON . SHE WAS A GOOD GIRL & A GREAT NEICE!

My name is Kim Thomas. I've known Amber since elementary school. I haven't seen her for quite a while. We used to be really close. She was the sweetest and happiest person I have ever met. Always giggling and laughing even when there was nothing to laugh at. She found the humor and good side of everything. This story absolutely shocked me to my core. I also knew Cyndi. We went to middle school together. I didn't know her well except in passing just to say hi every now and then. I never had a problem with her, until now. I feel actual hatred for this girl. I feel a life sentence in prison isn't good enough for her. I don't even feel a death penalty would be good enough for her. My thoughts and condolences are with Amber's family. Frank and Kathy, please be strong. You will get through. Chester, there is a special place in heaven for people like you. Hunter and Hailey, know that your mommy will always be with you. I live in Maryland so it will be hard for me to keep up with what happens to the murderer but if someone could please keep me informed, I would greatly appreciate that. My email address is Kim_M_Thomas@ctihome.com.
Amber, you will be missed and you are loved. All of your hometown friends are mourning and grieving you.

Bestfriends .... for how many years? My view of this is Cynthia could have avoided this conflict by not opening the door. I ask myself if she avoided conflicts why not call the cops? Why take someones life? Your BESTFRIENDS at that. If my life was threanted I would have never opened that door... Amber was getting on a bus that same day to leave South Carolina.. Why didnt Cynthia just let her leave.. she would have never had to face her again?? How many years was they bestfriends... you beg Amber to come to South Caronlina to live.. and now your threanted... dont think so!
From day one Cynthia claimed Amber was on drugs... funny.. she being the ADULT was found with drugs in her home.. she could have said NO and now all the sudden those are Ambers drugs... I mean come on.. you MURDERED her and now you want to keep dragging her name in the mud... Amber and the baby have been tested.. guess what .. NO DRUGS found in her sysytem nor the baby.
I wasnt aware that Amber was in the house? She was shot on the porch and Mike was nextdoor when he came running over. What about after she shot Amber... and Mike said What did you do.. and Cynthia said.. she deserved to DIE... NO ONE deserves to die.. not that way!!
I'm sure Cynthia may have been all those things as you stated 5 years ago but people do change and this is a fact in this story. She did the crime now she needs life!

I am a very close friend of Amber's family..I consider them my own. I cannot begin to describe what I felt getting this news while I was on vacation. Melissa Amber's cousin is my best friend and all I could think about was getting on the next plane and coming home to be with her and her family in this time of need. How could someone who was as close with her as I am w/ Melissa do something like this? Melissa and I have had many many arguments over the years and I can't ever imagine it coming to that point. I am not here to judge as I will leave that up to god. But I am here to tell you that in a society where there is danger lurking everywhere why would you fear for your life from your best friend whom you encouraged to move to SC with you? It puzzles me beyond belief. These girls were friends since Middle School they probably could finish each others sentences and now one takes the others life? Amber was 6 month's pregnant and unarmed what was Cyndi fearing? It also saddens me that after doing such a horrific thing how she could continue to try to drag Amber's name through the dirt...the drugs found in Cyndi's home were Amber's? Why would Cyndi allow Amber to put drugs in her home..Ambers house was right next door correct? And let us not forget that Cyndi chose to answer the door and have another altercation w/ Amber doesn't seem like she was too fearful for her life. As I said before I love Amber's family as my own and it hurts me to see them and myself grieve over this. I'm sure that Cyndi's family is grieving as well and I pray for them as well but they will be able to hear thier daughter, relative, or friends voice again..we have been robbed of that precious privelege. The fact is Hunter and god willing Hailey will never be able to go to their mother for the things that a child needs. I pray for everyone involved..look to god because he will see you through but the world is missing more than a little music these days and I'm sure that Amber will never be forgotten. Kathy, Frank, Chester, Hunter and Hailey...when you feel like you are to weak or hurt to go on..remember you now have a new Angel to hold you up..my thoughts and prayers are with you all!

You know people can make there comments because it is America and we are allowed to do that but you really need to think about what you are wrtiting before you actually do it. 2 best friends -have been every since middle school. One brings the other all the way to another state to be with them. An argument over a scratch on a car?? a car?? Leads to a YOUNG LADY a PREGNANT YOUNG LADY to be killed.
It is a very sad situation. Now all this talk of self devensive. That is crazy. The neighbor has stated Amber was walking away and Cynthia was calling her back. UMmm.. if Im scared of someone and Im inside of a house Im not going to open my door and call them back to me??? HELLO! The bottom line is you do not kill your best friend or anyone for that matter over a silly argument. If your having an argument with someone call thoes men in blue that is what there here for. A young lady @ the age of 22 is dead. Her son Hunter will never really know his mother..can you remember back when you were 2? Hailey a innoncent baby that never even ahd a chance to be brought into the world the right way she was forced here by her mother being killed and now she has no chance for life. The doctors are saying she wont make it past the next few days. The defense lawyers saying "poor cynthia" please!!!!!!!!!!Poor Hunter and Hailey!Poor Amber and her family! Cynthia can still the trees smell the grass watch the sun come up...Amber will not! Lets just hope she does all thoes things behind a jail cell!!!!!!!!!! Justice needs to be served! YOu never are to take a persons life into your own hands let alone 2 lifes. But lets see how many other lifes was she slowly taking also but the making and selling of a narcotic!

I knew Cyndi back in 1997 when we both attened Plum Point Middle School in 8th grade, in Maryland. After my friends suddenly turned on me ( you know how 8th grade girls can be) Cyndi was the only person who was ever nice to me. She was the only person who even talked to me! We had P.E together and always helped out the special ed kids instead of playing basketball with the rest of our class. In our 9th grade year we went to different high schools. I moved to Florida and she stayed in Calvert County. She called me once to inform me about the death of our friend Julie. That was the last time I talked to her. And to now see her on the news committing this heinous crime, I'm shocked!!!!!! She must have changed so much from that caring young lady I knew all those years ago. What happened??? I'm not here to defend her actions, I just want to know the complete truth. I live in Florida so all I can read are these news articles. I'm so sad about Amber...She went to my school too and I kind of remember her but we weren't friends. I hope her son and family can move on and the baby girl live a healthy life!- Sara
#13 Sep 21, 2006
Unfortunatly Sara the baby girl is not expected to live her kidneys are failing there is another article regarding that issue in the same paper. It's very very sad that this family is now going to be dealing w/ another funeral.

Opinions are like ,you know, and everyone has one. My question is how much threat could a 6 months pregnant woman really be?? How much could she really do?? and if cynthis was threatened by her boyfriend why ddint she shoot him??? how much threat could Amber be outside of the house??? were there not locks on the door??? if Cynthias had enough sence to call her boyfriends mom, why could she not call the police??? IF SHE FELT SO THREATENED??? Now we have two little babies that dont have a mom....i hope that justice will be served...there is no excuse for what she has done.
#15 Sep 21, 2006
I have heard the self defense thing one to many times. The fact of the matter is this, who made it Cyndi's job to judge another person? Who made it her decision to take another one’s life? Ohhh make that 2 lives. Amber was my cousin and the fact that she was taken from this world is a tragedy! No one person has the right to take another’s life. A six month pregnant woman was no threat! And anyone who thinks that she was needs therapy! Another thing that bothers me is that I can not put a dollar amount on someone else’s life. So that fact that Cyndi was released on $100,000 bond doesn’t make sense to me. So we are going to let a murderer free? She who has taken a 2 year old boy from his mother. She who also has put an infant baby who is fighting for her life in serious jeopardy from her mother. Is that justice? I can’t see that as justice. Since I believe that she should spend the rest of here life in prison, she has gotten the chance to say goodbye to her family. Cyndi did not give Amber that chance. Frank and Kathy will never see there little girl again and that was done by a person who is clearly outside of her mind. Who gave her the right to do that?
I can only hope that the Hailey will survive and get to live the life that Amber wanted for her. And if that innocent baby dies….Cyndi I know there is a hell and you better believe that you will end up there. SOONER rather than later. NO ONE GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO TAKE ANOTHER ONE’S LIFE! AND JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED!

Bond granted for shooting suspect
Baby struggles for life
By Meryl Dillman
September 20, 2006
Tears streamed down Cynthia Marchbanks’ face Wednesday as she listened to descriptions of the loss of her 26-week-pregnant friend and neighbor.
Ms. Marchbanks is charged with murder in the Sept. 8 death of Amber Dawn Robey, 22. On Wednesday, Mindy Hervey, assistant 10th Circuit solicitor, and Robey family members told Judge J.C. Nicholson Jr. what took place on Sept. 8 and about the loss the family feels.
Judge Nicholson set a $100,000 surety bond for Ms. Marchbanks, 22. She is also charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, possession of weapon during the commission of a violent crime and manufacturing marijuana. Ms. Marchbanks of West Roosevelt Drive in Anderson County was instructed to not have any contact, direct or indirect, with Ms. Robey’s family.
Ms. Robey was fatally shot in the face and was pronounced dead at AnMed Health Medical Center. Her baby girl, Hailey, was delivered by an emergency Caesarean section at AnMed Health. Hailey was later taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and remained there still Wednesday night in critical condition. Her health has significantly deteriorated, according to authorities.
About 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Hailey’s heart stopped beating, said Susann Griffin, spokeswoman for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office. She was later revived.
If Hailey dies, Ms. Marchbanks will be rearrested and charged with murder, Ms. Griffin said.
During the bond hearing, Ms. Marchbanks’ parents, Gwen and Bobby Marchbanks, stood by their daughter’s side. Mr. Marchbanks told Judge Nicholson that his daughter is a good girl and a good daughter.
"She always goes out of her way to help other people," he said.
Ms. Robey’s brother, Robert, and his wife, Lindsey, were also present during the hearing. They currently have temporary custody of Hailey. Lindsey Robey read a prepared statement to the judge. One line read, "Amber’s family and friends will never get to see her smiling face again or hear her precious voice."
Marlene McClain, victim’s advocate director at the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, also read a letter from Amber Robey’s parents, Frank and Kathy. The last lines of the letter read, "Our daughter was only 22 years old. She was coming home to have her baby and be with her son. Now we have to live in deep sorrow and some day to explain to her children where their mommy is. How do we do that?"
Amber Robey planned to travel on the day she died to Virginia to be with her parents, according to authorities. She has a son, Hunter, who is 2 years old, who is currently living with her parents.
After the bond hearing, Cynthia Marchbanks’ attorney, Druanne White, who had originally requested a personal recognizance bond for Cynthia Marchbanks, said she is happy with the bond that was set.
"I think it’s fairly reasonable," she said.
Tenth Circuit Solicitor Chrissy Adams said she thought the bond that was set was "extremely appropriate."
"The facts and circumstances surrounding Amber’s death speak for themselves," Ms. Adams stated. "The defendant is an obvious danger to the community and is a significant flight risk due to her extensive ties outside this state. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Robey family as they stand vigil around baby Hailey and her courageous fight for life."
Frank Robey, Amber’s father, said he hoped Ms. Marchbanks would’ve been denied bond, but he understands she was entitled to a bond hearing.
"I don’t like it, but I think it’s fair," he said.
After the bond was set, Cynthia Marchbanks’ father, Bobby, said he and his wife are trying to get through what’s taking place. They’re doing it with the help and support of their family and friends.
"It’s been a tough situation," he said.
Gwen Marchbanks said they are praying for Hailey.
"We’re praying for that baby who’s innocent in the situation," she said.

Sara that is all good that she was so nice to you in middle school but here in adult world she shot my pregnant cousin over a scratch on her car??? She was also charged with manufacturing a narcotic?? That is the making of a drug??? So I wouldnt know anything about her being so nice. Are family now has to deal with the death of Amber possibly the death of her daughter that wasnt ready to be born yete and a son that now has no mother?? There is no excuse for someone to take someone elses life -sorry 2 lifes-..she will have to deal with a higher power that no one has any control over.
#18 Sep 21, 2006
While it is of course sad and tragic when anyone dies, clearly most people posting here could not possibly be subjective, as you all seemed to know her. The reality is that only two people know what really happened, and perhaps we should wait until the trial to judge someone? Maybe she was terrified and felt threatened, what do WE know? Whenever a young person dies everyone is quick to say how sweet and wonderful they were, but these two girls were friends, so they probably had a lot in common. If one was so nice then the other probably was too. And if one was violent and strung out, then maybe the other was too. Don't pass judgement until you hear the other side, and don't try the poor girl in public when she hasn't been able to defend herself yet! Cyndi looks tiny and skinny, not really able to defend herself. And don't forget that it says that she called police immediately after it happened instead of trying to run. Obviously she grasped the gravity of the situation and knew that her friend needed help. She looks so tortured in every picture the articles show of her, can't ANY of you have ANY sympathy whatsoever??
#19 Sep 21, 2006
Are you forgetting that you are asking a family who has just lost someone to have sympathy for the person who took her away? And that it is very possible they are facing planning another funeral for the tiny baby that is struggling for her life because of this young girls hands. Cindi was Amber's best friend this family knew her and had her in thier homes as well- she called Amber's mother and father "mom" and "dad". I clearly stated in my statements above that I am not here to judge her- not even the justice system can do that in the end it will all be handled by god. And the reality is that more than 2 people know what really happened being that it was witnessed by others. While I am unclear to Cindi's state of mind Amber's Toxoligy reports show she was drug free as well as the baby. As for trying her in public.. I only wish that this family did not have to bring thier anger hurt and tears to this newspaper forum- you say she hasn't been able to defend herself yet- it is clear she has taken at least 1 life-- is there a defense for that? A young pregnant girl was shot in the face- over a scratch on a car..how can you justify that and ask a grieving family to have sympathy for her? I re-read each comment and I do see the anger and the hurt in the family's statements I would imagine any human being would understand that loosing a family member or friend under these circumstances would bring that out in a person. I personally will "NOT" be sympathetic towards a cold blooded murderer- her family yes but not to her- she was a adult and she had the chance to make a adult decision which ended in the loss of 1 life and quite possibly another. So remember those facts before you bring the sympathetic card to the table of a grieving family-- if all she breathes is prison air for the rest of her life that is still more than Amber was able to do.
#20 Sep 21, 2006
No, no sympathy from me! Actually three people know the story and the other was Mike. It seems you might know her also.. noticed you called her Cyndi and not Cynthia. I remember by aunt and uncle calling her Cyndi also.
And whos to say the size of Amber.. I dont recall seeing pictures of Amber for you to size them up. I myself have seen pictures of this saint Cyndi... to bad her shirt was over her head!
No need to wait to judge, she needs to get life for the life she has taken! Maybe strung out.. maybe not.. no drugs found in Ambers system.
Its sad and tragic when someones dies but she shouldnt have been taken from us at 22 years of age - this shouldnt have been up to Cyndi.
