THIS IS AMERICA wrote: The day that my children get a private school education or are paid to attend school will be the day that I require them to dress in a school uniform as required by the school. Most private schools require wearing uniforms, and lets face it, if we can afford private school, we can afford the uniforms to go with it. IPS is far from capable of providing a private school education. I am employed by K-mart, and because they require me to wear a uniform, I do so. They pay me to do so. There are enough 'rules' to follow, handed to us by 'officials', that we swallow, lock, stock, and barrel, without question. And yes, most of them are for obvious reasons, but wearing street clothes to school is not a threat to public safety. Enough! This is America. My kids follow my every example without question, amd most of what my example provides is 'how and why to follow the rules' but this rule is one we refuse to take lying down. Never mind the expense, I don't care if I'm low income and qualify for free uniforms - I don't want them, and neither do my kids. I will do whatever it takes to stop this petty stupidity. IPS has done nothing but screw us over for the entire 4 years we have lived in this state. Last year, my 133-IQ child was told he was failing geometry. His teacher gave him the form for summer school to fill out. We sent it back filled out with the associated fees. His guidance counselor sent him home without the registration completed. I contacted him via voice mail asking why. He returned my call three weeks later and said that any child that is NOT failing a class is NOT allowed to go to summer school. I was overjoyed. Perhaps the geometry teacher made a mistake. The time for summer school registration came and went, and classes filled up. The report cards came in. There was a big F right next to GEOMETRY. TA-daaaa!!! What do you do for an encore??? I called the school department and was told "You can drop him off at Arsenal Tech to see if there are any openings on the start of the session." And if there aren't any spaces? What then? Does this student sit around waiting for someone to realize he has no way home?? What kind of idiot would suggest such a thing? So NOW, my child has to spend NEXT summer in summer school to make up the lost credit, when he'd rather be working (finally). So in actuality, the school department is COSTING US MONEY!!!! And these are the people to whom I am going to bow down and kiss butt?? I don't think so! Not only that, but there are several people in my neighborhood who feel the same, and are going to fight this. If it means the kids can't go to school, then I guess they're done. That means that IPS makes it's own students quit school. And are they really going to want that on their lilly-white record? I doubt it. You are such a victim. With that attitude, you will continue to go nowhere. Your kids will be losers because you taught them to be. Uniforms are far cheaper. A kid can get by with three pants and three shirts for a good part of the year. All you have to do is make sure you wash during the week to get to Friday. If your kids aren't too messy you can wear the same pants more than once. There is no comparing because everyone is the same. Used uniforms provide opportunities to get clothes really cheap or free. Every school should mandate uniforms. It makes life so much easier in the morning. I have saved a ton of money. Some people can afford private school with the money they save on clothes. My taxes are paying for your sorry azz to send your kids to school. I don't think I should pay because you think you have some kind of right to my money. If you don't want your kids to wear uniforms, homeschool.

Quite honestly, I was all for my daughter wearing a uniform when we moved up here. What a great way to continue to stuff our kids in boxes they don't need to be in. But, I was fine with it until I could find absolutely no where to buy the damn things. If you are going to force your school kids to wear stupid outfits that will have no bearing on their lives nor make them easier than you'd better make sure there are places to buy the stupid requirements you make. And no, I don't think spending $150 on a weeks worth of clothes specially mandated by a school is cheaper than the same week's worth of street clothes I can get from Wal-Mart for 1/3 that price is cheaper. And yes, that is about what it was priced for my daughter to get the clothes she needed for school from the school uniform catalog because, surprise we couldn't find anywhere else in the damn city to buy them.

Uniforms don't stuff kids in boxes, people do. Your attitude will create negativity and create problems that are not there. Walmart sells uniforms, polo shirts, skirts and slacks. If your school adopts a uniform that can only be purchased in a uniform catalog, that seems a strange. What school is this? A uniform is really a liberating experience. Children learn to create their own identities without relying on materialistic values. Uniforms reduce distractions so more time can be spent on educating. I've found the parents who can afford to buy the designer clothes are most bothered by a uniform policy. The youngest kids actually enjoy uniforms because it gives them a sense of belonging. As they get older, the uniform becomes just a part of school. Most parents love uniforms because it saves them money. When you do the wash every week, you can get by on $150 work of clothes for the year. What are you complaining about?
