Jogger runs up on female bear with cubs

Despite injuries, woman walks a mile uphill to get help
(CNN)-- A woman jogging at an Air Force base in Alaska on Sunday survived an attack by a brown bear sow defending its two cubs, the military said.
The victim, who is the wife of a man stationed at the base and declined to be identified, walked a mile after she was mauled before a good Samaritan spotted her and took her to a hospital at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
The woman was listed in stable condition on Monday at Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage.
According to CNN affiliate KTUU, the bear clawed the woman's arms, legs, neck and torso before leaving the site. The station reported the woman had the presence of mind to walk toward a populated part of the base even though it was uphill.
Maj. Angela Webb, a spokeswoman for the Air Force, said the area is popular with runners and bicyclists, who are warned to bring bear spray.
"In this particular case, the runner turned the corner at the wrong time and wrong place," Webb said.
The bear took a defensive pose, Webb said, before it went after the jogger.
The woman had been jogging with her husband, but he had run ahead of her.
It was the first bear encounter since 2010, when a bear went after four girls, three of whom played dead. The fourth ran to get help as the bear wandered away, Webb said.
The Air Force Times reported that bears, moose and wolves are not rare at the base, which spreads across more than 74,000 acres. It is adjacent to Anchorage.
I lived on EAFB in the 1970's...the article, like so many others, erroneously advises people to use pepper spray for bear attacks; see "A Can of Spray, A Lot of Luck' Anchorage Daily News; 9/29/96"; search for it online--I've posted it on various places, or ADN charges a fee to access their archives if you want the actual article. the article describes how we were attacked by a bear in Alaska and pepper spray did not stop it from knocking me down, growling and snarling in my face while waving its paw threateningly at my head as i sprayed the rest of the can into its throat (the only target--a wide open mouth right in front of my face). Bear ran away, i jumped up--should have stayed down--it made a u-turn charged again but did not attack us further--only ran between us knocking Keith Benner against a tree.

Just submitted to Anchorage Daily News:
To the Editor,
Re: "Craig Medred: Bears Are Awake; Humans Must Be Aware" (ADN 5/21/2014): Strange Medred would advise bear spray for bear attacks, since years ago he wrote 'A Can of Spray, A Lot of Luck'(ADN; 9/29/96), a story about our being attacked by a brown bear and bear spray not stopping the bear. Sprayed in its charge, the bear knocked me down and was growling and snarling in my face, waving its paw threateningly at my head (according to Keith Benner--I could only see its wide open mouth when spraying the rest of the can down its throat). The bear ran away, made a u-turn and charged again. Fortunately it only went around me, knocking Keith against a tree before leaving for good. Medred's follow-up article 'Pepper Spray? Bad Bet' cited wildlife biologists explaining bear spray doesn't work on black bears due to a "unique protective mucous coating". Why now advise bear spray?

My post from yesterday was removed (about the jogger just attackled by bear on the outskirts of Anchorage). ADN did not publish letter (above). Today, Medred has an article with the title touting pepper spray as the "best bet". No refeence at all in the article to our attack that Medred covered.

Just viewed Marcella Bella's E quando numerous times .....Excellent! Might even be better than her "Io Vivro" (of which Mina has a very entertaining cover as well); Marcella brings to mind Linda Ronstadt from time to time.

Definitely one of the best of not the best of George Benson...the second track on his 'Beyond The Blue Horizon', "The Gentle Rain" is performed live on this (audio) video--toned down w/out the electric organ as on Beyond the Blue...:

Just listened to Marcella bella's Io Vivro and it is better than her E quando...had forgotten how good Io Vivro is....Mina's cover is the most entertaining--her video is great fun to view, but thinking Marcella's cover is the best:
